About WordLookup

Permissions info: It requires Internet to fetch definitions via the Wordnik API. There's no ads whatsoever.

WordLookup allows you to view word definitions easily as you browse the web, and when using apps. It's like the popular Google Chrome extension Google Dictionary, but for Android! If you have found this useful, please do rate, share & comment!

Simply hold&select the word you wish to look up, share it with WordLookup and a small notification popup will show a few definitions for the word! It's that simple! No need to open another dictionary app! The little popup does not block you from browsing the web, as it is unobstructive and fades away after a short while.

As featured on CNET:
http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57618586-285/add-a-pop-up-dictionary-to-android/

WordLookup is also open source:
https://github.com/icechen1/WordLookup

Here's how to use it:
1- Hold and select the word you'd like to get the definitions.
2- Select the Share button in the menu/Action Bar.
3- Share text to WordLookup.
4- The definitions should show up in a bit as a popup(Toast) notification.

Supported Apps:
-ICS Android Browser
-Google Chrome
-ICS Gmail and Email app
-Google Reader
-Pulse
-Many,many others. More will be added in this list.

Right now, this app is only tested on Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich, as many apps on earlier versions of Android do not support sharing text, your mileage may vary, though. It uses the Wordnik API to get definitions, so a Data/WIFI network connection is required.

The options allows you to customize the notifications, such as the number of definitions shown and display time. Features like using other dictionary sources (offline dictionaries) are coming soon!

It is not good, one of the boring aspect is: when you look for the word, it pops up the meaning in a balloon and that balloon fade away before you finish reading. You can't hold the balloon with results, it just do what it wants to, please fix this. Plus it could be better if it was offline.

Handy app that partially emulates a good iPhone feature, but needs to be able to work offline. Also, the timed popup is annoying. I would prefer to be able to manually close the popup.

K70%
by K####:

As per previous reviews, can you make it skip the share step and put offline dictionary on the sd card...otherwise there's not much difference with just sharing a highlighted word with Google translate. Also I tried to look up some Chinese words but it didn't work. How can I fix this? Your long term goal should be to make this like Lingoes for Android.

K70%
by K####:

On my iPhone I could type a word, select it, then look it up in the dictionary or have it spoken. This app only allows you to do that for already written text. If this one improvement could be implemented, I would gladly rate this app five stars. Other wise it suffices.

E70%
by E####:

It is definitely better than all those floating dictionaries. I mean..Why they are made at all? What 's their use case? This one solves the purpose of getting a meaning while reading something not worrying about change of app. But the problem is it works only in browsers not in other reading apps and it's a bit slow too, not the app but fetching the meaning.

K70%
by K####:

Great idea. No actually its a frickin obvious idea. Takes too long. Text to speech doesnt work and a definition to say something is a plural of something else is moronic. Since your the only halfwit to come up with this basic function please can you make it work? Id pay you!

I m using opera mini... whn u select ne word there, theres no option as share... its only 'copy, search, n search with' and ur app doesnt show up in any... kindly guide if i mnt doing it properly...

K70%
by K####:

Often, looking up a word won't actually give the ultimate definition. Instead you get something like "plural of..." and no way to follow that up inside the pop-up

Been using this for over 2 years while occasionally trying out others on the same device and this is still the best dictionary app I've used. Works almost perfectly save very rare crashes (only need to do is highlight the word again and share with WordLookup) that, to my memory, have never occurred more than once in a row.

It has a few bugs eg I think when the word can't be found in the dictionary. But definitely the best effort I've seen in the store. I would rather like it to replicate the iOS dictionary function which is far superior than anything else in the store..

K70%
by K####:

Very Good app but i can not rate it excellent only because it has only four pop up display time length options. It would be nice to see another option if added to it. For exapmple: to chose another pop up display option which will allow users to read the definition as long as they want to and dismiss manually.

K70%
by K####:

...it doesn't parse plural words into singular words, thus leading to "No definition found" messages. The implementation on iOS is what basically needs to be copied, and this app almost gets it, but not quite.

K70%
by K####:

It stopped working all of sudden. I had to uninstall and reinstall it. Now its working back to normal. This app brings a missing feature of iOS to android.

K70%
by K####:

Besides the only problem which it is having is no properly developed pronunciation support...It always force closes when pressing the audio button in the browser dictionary. It will surely fetch you 5 on 5 from many if this is fixed.

I used this a lot on iphone and glad this came to android. ☺ one thing would be to have more of the definition show instead of having to open it

Brilliant idea for an app! That said, I have a few suggestions for its improvement: 1) App settings should allow user to choose between a Toast pop-up or dialog box. Dialog box should give one access to further word searches, and should have a button to speak out the word and/or definition in click. 2) Direct the word queries to an online dictionary that, when asked for the definition of 'eggs', is smart enough to show the result for 'egg', instead of saying that eggs is the plural of egg.

Very quick and easy way to look up words, while reading, without having to exit what you are reading. Very useful! I do suggest to add a feature to where the pop up for the definition can be dismissed manually.

It works, it is careful & frugal with permissions, it is free of advertising. I wish there was a "Donate" version/option. This Guy deserves a dollar much more than many others. Technically, I wish it was a bit more 'integrated'. Perhaps utilizing the Xposed Framework? Also, a solution for stubborn apps (those that do not respond to word selection) will be nice. Also; an option to keep definition on screen until dismissed (by swiping the definition pop-up?). And; make pop-up text selectable?

The app itself doesn't work in android 5.01. I am kinda excited when I found this because I used this functionality in iPhone. Hope new version will come out soon

I'm using Honor 7 phone and I find it funny for having to go through a long process in getting the meaning of a word, contrast to the experience in using an apple phone. Any way in speeding up the process, example via one-touch only?

U70%

Agree with other users that it needs a way to manually close out of the definitions, rather than the timed exit it has now. Makes you feel panicky when attempting to speed read longer definitions before time runs out. It also only works in very select settings (i.e. not email or apps), though that may be due to Android issues rather than app. No where near as good as what Apple has standard, but is certainly better than nothing!

What would make it better personally speaking would be if the long hold would activate a word look up button and if we can have a history of the words we looked up and link to the web page. Please make this happen. Thanks for a good helpful product that helps users like me increase my vocabulary and make sense of things on which i would usually quit coz of laziness.

Not show the pop up window on Sony. Also what is the purpose to going to share option to looking to find the app in long list, when you already selected a word and expect to see the definition.

Just remove the time limit of displaying the definition... Would prefer manually removing the definition pop up by touching other parts of screen or by swap.. Keep up the great work.. Cheers

Very limited app with very few options. A good app would be offline, have options to choose preferred dictionaries, and allow for translation. One star for being a pop-up dictionary and two stars for being free.

L70%

Most of the time it doesn't really tell me the meaning of the word. It will say it is the plural form of "this or that" but not the meaning. Fix that and you get 5 ⭐!

It works OK when browsing the web but couldn't get it to work for my email, SMS or for in app use ie WhatsApp, would love a ios style andriod app and wouldn't mind paying for it come on developers please make it happen.

The app could use a few additional options- fewer steps maybe? I use it everyday.

Excellent on the fly dictionary. Two minor suggestions for a 6 out of 5 stars. Rather than flashing the definition entry based on the amount of time selected in the default setup, please place a dismiss button with definition entry that can be pressed when a person is finished reviewing. A similar button should be available to TTS (have the phone read the definition entry). Great app; can't believe this isn't default in Lollipop.

Why don't just copy to define or translate, that will be easier and faster!

S70%

Works like it does in iOS, in fact better! When highlighting a word in Play Books, the definition automatically comes up. It's great!

U70%
by U####:

Good app. However, I would rather have the pop-up dismissed by pressing or tapping it rather than by timer. Sometimes I need the pop-up up for a second and sometimes longer. Dismissal by press would work a lot better than timer for me. If this is implemented, I would rate this four or five stars.

I was looking for such an app for quite long time. Right time reached, I could find this app. Further offline dictionary reference is expected.

I'm not sure if I'm using this app right. but nothng is happening whenever I highlight a word, nothing is popping up.

U70%

Gives no true definitions for plural words. For example a search of the word "equities" will result in: "The plural form of the word equity" but not give you the meaning of the word. You would have to google search the word wich beats the purpose of this app.

Best dictionary app I've used so far. Works almost perfectly save very rare crashes where all I need to do is highlight the word again/share with WordLookup. Thanks Dev guy(s) for this hella great tool for deepening [my] understanding of the English language.

Surprised Google hasn't built this in to the browser. Maybe they'll take notice and buy the app for a few million $$$'s!

U70%

This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for so long in Android. I wanted a word lookup functionality where I need not have to leave the browser and lookup for the meaning in a different app. I'm giving 4 stars because I think the 3 tap lookup can be brought down to just 2. One can just tap hold the word and select Define from a popup to display the meaning. Also currently the popup remains for few second and fades out. Instead, allow users to tap again to close the definition popup.
