“法鼓”一詞，佛典中有多處提及。如《妙法蓮華經》云：“惟願天人尊，輪無上法輪，擊于大法鼓，而吹大法螺，普及大法雨，度無量眾生，我等咸歸請，當演深遠音。”所謂“擊于大法鼓”就是敲響佛法淨化心靈的鼓聲，使人心獲得安樂與平靜。由於法鼓山的地理形貌，猶如一個縱臥的大鼓，故引經典之喻，取其似鼓之形，“法鼓山”之名遂由此而得也。
