Unless you pay extra it blocks JR Rail Pass compatible searches. Why? I don't understand the motivation for this pettiness. PC version does not do this. Another example to me of how second best mobile apps are.

I can not recommend this to a first time visitor to Japan as the only inputs into the app is the exact station you want to start at and end at and which exact lines and fares you are interested in. If you are familiar with Japanese train stations however, this is a great app with an up to date time table and cost comparison! The app to use for route mapping! (Made by Hitachi, a major manufacturer for trains in Japan!)

This app immediately crashes and exits, the error log says something about: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{com.hyperdia.android.activity/com.hyperdia.android.activity.P10000}: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Bad pattern character 'E' in E, d MMM yyyy at ... Is there a way to get it working at all?

Just loved it!! Very useful app to travel in Japan by train.

So I had to open another account. But now it is not possible to pay for JR Pass search because my credit card can't be linked to this account. Why is the App not available in the swiss Google Play Store? And why can't I just buy a voucher somewhere and Input that for JR Pass search? Now I have to do it manually each time!

The app performed nearly flawlessly for the entirety of my family's trip. All times and, more importantly, tracks were accurate. This made it simple to make any necessary transfers and was critical to us as we were travelling with suitcases and a large stroller and thus required elevators at each station. I can't recommend it enough.

This app has helped my friends and I during our trip to multiple cities in Japan. It's not without it's flaws, as it can be confusing to use at first, but if you can navigate yourself through the screens, you tend to get used to it. My friends and I have successfully used this app to determine which trains we needed to get on through our JR Rail pass. We've traveled from Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima with this app with rarely any hiccups. Definitely recommend this app when traveling by rail

X70%
by X####:

I found this app extremely useful to book train tickets around Japan. The search options allow you to choose JR Rail Pass so the bullet trains that are excluded do not show up in the search results.

X70%
by X####:

Really bad UI, but once you learn all the tricks it can work pretty well. Of course the main reason to get the app would be if you have a JR Pass, since the app is able to use this information when planning routes. Note however that you have to pay an extra in-app subscription for that to work, which really feels like a "tourist tax".

Y70%
by Y####:

To the idiot who complained about having to buy another pass on top of the JR Pass: It's a subscription pass to use the app, NOT another train pass!! Please make sure you have at least 100 IQ before attempting high technology.

This app was super helpful to have while traveling in Japan between Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. (This was just my trip - it's helpful for all areas of Japan!) It gave accurate train times and often the track the train was on to! It will give you different options/routes, tell you the cost and the time your trip will take! Highly recommend this app, it saved me more then once while in Japan and helped me out every time I traveled!

F70%
by F####:

The app has a design coming right from 2008 (beginning of android) but it comes helpful in complement of google maps. Don't forget to press the button detail to set up options and filters.

... when traveling to Japan. It has served me well, every single trip, since I first installed it in 2013.

D70%

Indispensable for traveling in Japan, especially if you've purchased a JR pass. I had no trouble purchasing the premium Pay Coupon (on Marshmallow, LG G4) to enable searching by JR Pass only: just long press the square "overview" navigation button on your device (from left to right at the bottom of the screen: back (triangle), home (circle), overview (square)) to emulate the menu button--this is true of many apps that have an interface designed for 4.x. Choose Options, Pay Coupon. This was well worth the $2.99 for a month. We used it not just in planning our options before visiting a ticket office to reserve ordinary car seats, but also on the platform to verify that this was indeed the train number/time of the train we needed to board to make our connection. It is occasionally slow to open, and crashed once or twice, hence 4 not 5 stars. Far superior to the Navitime Japan Travel app!

Works great and you can buy a cheap coupon to make the app show JR Rail pass valid routes.

D70%

Most current app to use to navigate where to go and when via trains.

D70%

I don't know how I would have gotten around without this app. It was reliable and accurate on everything except fares for private trains, where it was a little off on prices. Perfect for planning any trip from days out to spur-of-the-moment.

Good app but the menu button in order to buy jr pass coupon worked the first time i pressed, but not afterwards. Needs to be fixed then the app would be perfect.

I remember the app was decent when I used it a year and a half ago with Samsung galaxy s2. Now I have an ulefone be one and it crashes whenever I try starting the app. Might be a problem with the phone / os (kitkat).

It seems like a good app. But I want to "pay coupon" through the menu but there is no menu on the app.

I really missed this app a lot.

The main problem with this app, right now, is that it doesn't work with Android 6.0. Other problems: typing the first few letters of a station name doesn't bring up a list of suggestions, so if you don't know the romanized spelling of a station name, you have to play hit and miss. Avoid this one. If the next update includes station suggestions, it may be worth looking at. But since Hitachi Systems hasn't updated it in over 2 years, I wouldn't hold your breath.

D70%
by D####:

App works OK in older Android versions prior to 6.0 app cannot predict station name of you misspell the name, pretty frustrating actually. Otherwise, Japan trains are mostly pinpoint on time and this app shows you how much you will pay. The search options are a bit buried, but can save you some cash of you are willing to take longer or more transfers ,etc. Enjoy Japan.

No way that I can find to enable the JR Pass checkbox. I am willing to pay, but how to do it is a mystery.

Enable JR search settings to make lookin up location easier. I've use this very time for my trip. Look up routes. Take screen shots on my phone. Show it to JR rep what train I want

Hope it gets updated soon. Otherwise, 5 stars and my favourite app while in Japan.

The Japan Trains app is able to find routes that this app can't find, and it is free to search rail pass JR shinkansen lines. The results show travel options that I exclude from the search results. I bought the rail pass unlock code and removed flight options from my search but my top results are still for routes that use airlines. I can search the same options in Japan Trains and it shows the correct route. The app layout also needs to be improved as it is not difficult to read than it should be.
