HistOrigin® American History for Android
The HistOrigin® free history app is designed primarily for the automobile traveling public. Great entertainment for the passenger on a long drive. Follow along and listen to the village history as you come close to the next town.
The HistOrigin® project is an on-going effort to collect the origin stories of all cities, towns, villages, burgs, boroughs and hamlets of the United States, and to bring this unique aspect of American history to the traveler.
Why is a town named as it is? When was the land first settled, Who were the first settlers? Why was the location attractive for settlement? These are just a few of the questions the HistOrigin® project attempts provide the user. A great way to pass time and learn a little American history while on a long drive.
HOW IT WORKS
There are 2 modes. TRAVEL MODE and EXPLORE MODE
Travel Mode - Start the HistOrigin® free history app, turn up the volume on your device, set the device down and listen. As you approach the next community on your route, you will automatically hear the Origin Story for that community.
Explore Mode - When you toggle the HistOrigin® app into explore mode, you can move the map around and interact with the community pushpins. Click on a pushpin and a small box will launch, with an options for viewing or listening to the story of the locations earliest village history.
The HistOrigin® project was started as a desire to collect the stories of origins of the communities of the United States. To present this aspect of American history in the form of a travel app, which the public could use in an automated way that would be both entertaining and educational.
There are currently 2000+ stories for communities within the states of New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Users in these states will be able to experience the full functionality of the HistOrigin® app.
The National Historical Marker database has also been added as a table in the HistOrigin® free history app. Users of the HistOrigin® Premium version have the ability to filter out the display of Historical Markers.
PLEASE NOTE. THERE CURRENTLY MAY NOT BE A CITY TOWN VILLAGE HISTORY story FOR YOUR HOMETOWN. However, you will see Historical Markers for the entire nation.
Our database grows every day and our goal is to obtain the Origin Story for every community in the United States.
You can help. Do you know your village history or the origin story for your community? We have provided a form that allows users to add a story to our database. You can access the form from within the HistOrigin® app or the historigin.com website. If you have a story to share, we are interested to hear from you. Help us bring American history into the 21st century build HistOrigin® into a national treasure.

The information is handy, but the reader is way too fast and Runs sentences together. Also can't get app to stop. It's always running in background. Even when I tell it to shut down, its still there.
I travel alot for work and it's kind of cool to get a bit of history about the cities, towns and village around me. There are alot of funny names and it's cool to know a bit about who named them, when and why. I like that it reads them off as I travel. They also have the historical markers for the entire US. I don't use that as much. They have good coverage with history of Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania. Definitely worth the download if you enjoy city history while you travel, passes the time!
I found out all about the signs and history I have driven by for years and am enjoying exploring on my phone. Haven't even left the house with it yet!
I love being able to learn the history of cities as I am traveling on a road trip. I get bored in the car and it helps the time fly by! The app works good but is clearly an early version. Look forward to future updates, this is one of my apps to watch.
