About OnomatoGo!
OnomatoGo is part of the Onomato Project (http://onomatoproject.com), a movement to spread the wealth of Japanese onomatopoeia and mimetic words throughout the world. The Japanese language includes expressions representing everything from the sound of lightly falling rain (potsu-potsu) to a scraggly beard (bosa-bosa). While in English one might describe the wind by attempting to mimic the sound itself, Japanese people tap into their readily available vocabulary: soya-soya for a light wind, byoo-byoo or pyoo-pyoo for a heavier one. It is our wish to share this unique and playful lexicon not only with students of Japanese, but also with people the world over, breaking down communication barriers with a large, resonant DON!
With hundreds of unique sounds and images, OnomatoGo is a fun and unique way to improve your Japanese onomatopoetic and mimetic knowledge. Use the training mode to pick up new expressions, and then test them in quiz mode. You can also use the easily searchable dictionary to look up expressions in a snap.
