About Reading Log

The app enables parents to manage reading logs of books for kids. Books can be scanned in via the barcode scanner on the phone or entered manually. Book data is retrieved from a public Google API, including a thumbnail image of the book. A parent can store additional data about the book, including:

- date read
- number of pages read
- time spent reading in minutes
- who read this: me, child, parent or "read together"
- comment for storing additional information

Parents can e-mail an HTML or CSV report in order to print out the log to submit to the kids' teachers. Multiple logs can be managed simultaneously.

Development started on Android 2.3 with a Droid X and compatibility-wise should work on any Android 2.1+ device with a camera. It relies on the zxing Barcode Scanner application to scan books. If you don't have that app, the phone should prompt you to download it the first time you attempt to scan a book. Book information can also be entered manually, in case the scan fails or there is no bar code (should be rare).

You'll need some books to scan. It should be pretty self-explanatory to get started, once the app is launched. You can:

- Use the "+" icon or "..." top menu to scan a book
- Use the "pencil" icon or "..." top menu to enter a book manually
- Short press a book in the log in order to manage additional data
- Long press a book in the log in order to add/edit book data or remove the book
- Use the "..." top menu to:
* scan a book
* enter book information manually
* share the log (HTML & CSV supported)
* switch to a different log
* create new logs
* edit the name of the selected log
* delete a log.

Note: An advert may display after sending the log.

I use this app to keep track of the books I've read. Almost always, I've had to scan the barcode on the inside cover. The code on the back cover does read properly, but the app returns a "can't find book" error. Then I noticed that the code on the back cover is not the same as the code on the inside front cover for most of my books. This is not an error by the app, but something you might want to know. I will say, it is a pain to hold the front cover open and hold the phone steady to scan the code at the same time. I'd like to be able to sort my log by Author and/or Title. I'd give it 5 stars if that feature was added. Also, I'd like the book cover thumbnails to be stored on my phone, so that I can see them when I am at a location where I don't get a signal. The thumbnails can't be more than a couple Kb's each, so storage space shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for a good app. I look forward to some updates. UPDATE 1/29/16:Can't import a saved or backed up log. This app isvirtually useless to me. I emailed the log to myself before flashing my OS, only to find out the emailed log cannot be imported back into the app. Lost 2 years' of log entries. very unhappy!

I was hoping to be able to set a weekly goal that can be worked toward. Sadly, not a possibility with this app. (That I can see?)

Supports multiple logs, and can track time, number of pages, and if the child was reading with a parent, etc. Would really prefer an easier input method for time spent reading though. The slider is prone to slipping. If logging at night (EST), the date changes to tomorrow's date for some reason. Also am occasionally frustrated that the lookup library is missing some books but this is admittedly beyond the control of the app developers.

I am using this app to track the books I'm reading to my 1yo son, so we are of course reading many duplicates. I like that you can scan the barcode to find the book, but unfortunately it is very unreliable. To the point where a book I've been scanning since August, when I started using this app, no longer is recognized and a book that I tried to scan before now is. Manually entering a book wouldn't bother me if I could copy it to log it again, but that isn't available. Most books I scan do not come up.

Hi, so far this app seems great. I like that you can manually add the time and amt of pages and how it was read. I was also hoping in addition, there would be a capability to time the amt of reading. Do you think it is possible to add this feature? Then I would 5 star this app!

Can scan or manually add books. Track time, whether the book was read solo or with parent. Add comments. Perfect for tracking your child's reading. Can share by email, but tricky to print (email, save html page, open page, print). ONLY REQUEST, add share by print from app.

I see in your description there is supposed to be a menu where you can add a book manually. I can't find that menu in the app... My option option is to scan a book. So... Yeah... not useful for people wanting to log library books already returned.

I love this application. Exactly what I was looking for. I think its great that u can scan a book and it comes up with a picture of a book and gives you the choice to click "read by parent". I downloaded this application for myself so I can look back and see the books I've read. It also gives you the total added on the top of the page. Excellent!

The app has a good simple book tracking interface. Love the multiple list capability to help manage two reading children. It does need a little more: ability to edit date (in case I forget to enter), ability to search on manual entry to fill in book image, and looking to what I forsee school needing, page counts and perhaps manual meta data entry (looks like this will be a win for other users, and too).

Hi, I too am an adult reader. I'd like space to make notes for each book. An extra option of being able to lose the "read by child " And a share to Facebook link. Hope these improvements are possible. Would make a good app great :)

Hi Michael, I hope you are still working on improving this app. I just want to thank you for creating this free app for people and want to make it better. What I like about your app: I haven't really used it because it doesn't have my needs. But I like how I can add the book information. What I would like to see in a reading log book app: First of all, I'm not a parent nor a child. I'm just an adult who wants to keep track of my reading logs. I want to make sure that I'm reading everyday and learning. Not just to keep track of the books I am reading, but also the date, time, total number of mins or hours I have read, title of book, and author. I find the idea of having to print out a sheet from online is too much of a hassle. I wish that I can record everything right from my device. I also dont like to use the barcode scanner. First it's because I don't trust that app. Second, it is because it's too much of a hassle to keep taking pictures and scanning. Third I just want to record it by typing the information down So I what I really want to see is a daily reading log. Thanks. This is just my needs.

Can you add # of pages read? My child has to keep track of pages read and time read. And I don't see the option for "comment" when my phone is in landscape. It is there when vertical. Thanks!
