About Guthook's PCT Guide

Guthook's Guide to the Pacific Crest Trail is a detailed, map-based 5-part smartphone guide for your hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. It maps and lists 4,524 important hiker waypoints such as water sources, tenting sites, road crossings, detailed resupply information, and many others.

NO PHONE OR INTERNET SERVICE IS REQUIRED to use Guthook's Guides after the initial setup. Guthook's Guides use a combination of your smartphone's GPS, downloaded topo maps, and the Google Maps interface to accurately locate your position on the trail. Your phone's GPS pinpoints your location on the downloaded topo maps.

The free demo covers the 43 mile portion in Southern California from the U.S./Mexico Border to Mt. Laguna. The demo is fully function with all features of the paid version. In-app purchases include guides for Southern California, Central California (Sierra), Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. There are also in-app purchases available for the John Muir Trail, the Mount Whitney Trail and the Wonderland Trail.

A bright red line indicates the location of the main trail on the map. Side spurs to water sources or other points of interest are indicated in blue. Waypoints of interest to the hiker are plotted on the map. There are also markers on the map every mile or kilometer of the trail track.

The elevation profile shows trail distance vs elevation and plots your current location on the trail. Each waypoint is plotted on the profile. Each waypoints is clickable, opening to the waypoint's detail page.

The guidebook lists every waypoint in order by distance along the trail and how far away you are from each waypoint. The guidebook also includes a detailed town guide for major resupply points and towns along the PCT.

Send your current location to friends and family via text message or e-mail.

Each waypoint includes a detail page, providing further details about that particular waypoint. Details include the waypoint's mileage point and elevation, photographs of the waypoint, distance northbound and southbound to the next water source and tent site, a Trail Register where you may post comments and read other users' comments, and other details that will help you during your hike, and help you plan your hike.

The types of waypoints include:

About the Pacific Crest Trail: The Pacific Crest Trail, or PCT, is the longest completed trail in the world at 2,650 miles. The trail begins at the U.S./Mexico border near Campo, California, and winds its way through California, Oregon and Washington to its northern terminus at the U.S./Canada border near Manning Park in British Columbia, Canada. Many hikers complete the entire trail in one season ("thru-hikers"), and countless others enjoy hiking anywhere from a few miles to hundreds of miles each year.

I keep trying to download the offline maps for the super pct package but it keeps saying connection to server lost. I've tried redownloading the app and just won't work..not sure what's happening. The one that did download works pretty good though.

Great up to date info on water sources, trail closures, tent sites, town info etc. Works without data and gps works 100% in the first 260 miles. After that... I'm about to find out.

Great app for the PCT. I have used their Arizona Trail app too, and I am always spot on on trail with the GPS features. The crowd updated water source report is extremely valuable to figure out water carries and overall this app is a great help to my hike. Just download this app. You really won't regret it.

If you're too cheap to buy this app then you'd better make friends with someone on trail who has it. Most useful purchase for my thru hike last year! Keeping it on my phone for future forays in the Sierra.

5 stars because it's the APP you want. It could be improved in a lot of ways, but it's the most useful APP out there (currently).

It was user error in my part...app team answered all my question very quickly and helped me with the app. Thank you for such great customer service!

I had an issue with having separate JMT app and PCT apps. They helped me combine them into the PCT app so I didn't have to have two separate apps. Fast response from customer support. Love having all my maps/trails in one app. I do miss the mileage markers though. I liked being able to quickly count where I'll be if I hike say 5 more miles for example. Not having them does clean up the map though.

You certainly don't need this app to hike the PCT, but the convenience and detail it provides makes it the best option available. The pictures and user comments are especially helpful. Put your phone in airplane mode and turn on the GPS, and you can use it all day with very little impact on your phone's battery. (Ratatouille, PCT 2015) ... 2016 UPDATE: New and improved with current Halfmile data. Had a minor issue but it was resolved with great customer service.

If you're getting ready to hike the PCT, your research will reveal Halfmile's and Guthook's PCT apps as the apps to have on the trail. If you can afford it, this app is an incredible asset and far more detailed than Halfmile's. I haven't regretted dropping the dough in my 500+ miles of hiking so far. It matches well with the water report, provides accurate mileage information, shows pictures of tentsites on the trail, and provides a digital register at each marker. Highly recommended!

Would not hike without it. Still a wip. Needs fix for position on guide tab sometimes does not update as quickly as position on map and elevation tabs. (For Samsung galaxy s5) also selecting map base while offline is weird.

Really like the format of the app and the level of trail and town detail is amazing. Downloads are fast too. Had a query regarding in app purchases, contacted developer & got helpful prompt response. Well worth the investment.

Well, I haven't actually used this yet,, but while learning to use it I don't see the mile markers as promised. I'm not sure if I need to do something to get them to show up or if it's just a problem with the program or my phone. With the mile (or is it half mile) markers this app looks very promising! I even bought a map to see if the mile markers showed up on the purchased map. Once I use the app and figure out how to get the mile markers I think it will be five stars. I just read the response from Guthook. I think I prefer the markers on the trail because it's more visual at a glance, but maybe because I'm used to them on the app I used for the AT. I'm sure tapping the trail will work fine once I get used to it. After my hike I'll come back and adjust my rating when I have experience using it. Thanks for the rapid reply!

I separately bought the JMT version of your app, but this version wants me to buy it again. Is there any way to get my previous purchase recognized so I can use it with the improved UI? Thanks!

Had minor issues with the gps, now after the latest "patch" the trail, mile markers, and landmarks have disapeared from the map. Which is super awesome when you're three days away from anywhere and trying to figure out if you're still on the trail. But hey at least I have a super expensive picture of California on my phone. So I got that going for me.

didnt want to pay for the maps. Went with the halfmile map app and the hard copies.
