About The Florida Trail Guide

Information in this app is based on “The Florida Trail Guide” by Sandra Friend and John Keatley.

The Florida Trail Guide is a detailed, map-based smartphone guide for your hike on the Florida Trail. It lists important hiker waypoints on the FT such as water sources, shelters, tenting sites, road crossings, resupply locations, and may others.

NO PHONE OR INTERNET SERVICE IS REQUIRED to use The Florida Trail Guide after the initial setup. The Florida Trail Guide uses a combination of your smartphone's GPS, downloaded topo maps, and the Google Maps interface to accurately locate your position on the trail. Your phone's GPS pinpoints your location on the downloaded maps.

The free demo covers the 42.3-mile Blackwater route from the Florida-Alabama border to Harold. The demo is fully function with all features of the paid version. In-app purchases include sections of the Florida Trail.

A bright red line indicates the location of the main trail on the map. Side spurs to water sources or other points of interest are indicated in blue. Waypoints of interest to the hiker are plotted on the map. There are also markers on the map every mile or kilometer of the trail track.

The elevation profile shows trail distance vs elevation and plots your current location on the trail. Each waypoint is plotted on the profile. Each waypoints is clickable, opening to the waypoint's detail page.

The guidebook lists every waypoint in order by distance along the trail and how far away you are from each waypoint.

Send your current location to friends and family via text message or e-mail.

Each waypoint includes a detail page, providing further details about that particular waypoint. Details include the waypoint's mileage point and elevation, photographs of the waypoint, distance to the next water source and campsite, a Trail Register where you may post comments and read other users' comments, and other details that will help you during your hike, and help you plan your hike.

The types of waypoints include:

-->Water sources (including the reliability of each water source)
-->Tenting sites/camping sites/shelters
-->Trail junctions
-->Parking areas along the trail
-->Picnic areas, campgrounds, ranger stations
-->Roads, railroad tracks, power lines
-->Privies/restrooms
-->Towns on the trail

Awesome!! Armed with this app, and a strong desire to finish the Florida National Scenic Trail, I did just that. Get in a little shape (my suggestion is walk 10 miles a day, three days in a row with full pack weight and you're physically in the game. set up your tent or hammock and sleep in it in the rain, poop in a hole a couple times and bam. You're thru hiker bound). Lose your excess gear, and go!! Over nighting or thru hiking the info in the app help with water, camping and resupply, for those of us that need it. It made an enjoyable hike even more so. Go!! Do it!!!

Great app. When trail conditions change like a temp reroute or a new water/food source is available it can be updated.

You have to pay for most of it. It looks like a great app but with a low income just can't get it.

I give in... Great App and well worth the $35 for content. You guys should give a discount to those who have already purchased your book.

C70%

This should not cost $35 to get the actual map trails.

Very useful and does not drain my battery.

I would not want to hike the FT very far without this app. That said, I have thru hiked the trail, and suggest one only section hike the few good parts: it is not worth the effort of thru-hiking.

Great, great app! Love the distance it gives you to next water, shelter etc. Love that it tells you the cool stuff to watch for along the way, love that satellite mode shows you where you are in relation to next Sandy beach...my trail map was useless - this was priceless!

Accurate, simple and light weight. Love it!

I was very happy with this app, then the last map I bought had trouble launching because it was missing a file? It said. Support told me I needed to delete the app and reload it. I did that, and then the map loaded okay, but I then had the old map version. I know this because the other people I was hiking with had updated versions that had the re-directed trail for Three Lakes WMA just past the FL Turnpike. Didn't realize it until I got out there.

I made it to Fort Pickens from Big Cypress, than you.

The trails you see on their website are not on the app. I bought the app with the assumption that the trails on their site would also be on their app, and I would use the app out of on the trails with my bike. So I paid $6.99 to unlock Ocala, Northeast Florida. The trails I needed (that were on the site) were not on there. So I contacted the site owners, asking for help to figure out where the trails were, or to refund my money, and I received no response.

Will be using today!

Well worth the money which should help developers keep it current. I had 1 issue my first time out where a section has been rerouted. I was using it like the gospel and took a turn down what appeared to be a much older path when I should be monitoring for orange blazes more often. I notified the developer and was assured they'll check this week and correct. As long as they keep everything current and supply rapid updates, this app will be well worth the small cost.

The maps are a tad pricey but very useful.

We just got off a section of the OTL trail. It was great knowing the mileage, distances to camp, water sources, etc. We did take the alternate loop trail from the Loop 4 camp all the way to Gate 2 of Dupuis. Unfortunately, the mileage is not listed for those which would have been nice to have. I'll probably purchase another section when the time comes.

The interface in this app is absolute garbage! It's a series of menus that conflict with each other the execution is absolutely horrible. Like others are saying paying for these maps makes no sense. This is the information age mapmaking is not a way to make money anymore Google can easily find you what you need.

U70%

I thru hiked the Florida trail with this app. I never gotten lost and knowing what was ahead made my hike definitely easier and better. Each waypoints have a lot of useful information.

D70%

You have to pay for maps!

Y70%

Totally useless unless you purchase the maps separately. Just a warning to others who make consider downloading it. There are much better resources that are free or low cost. This isn't one of them.

Y70%

The app is OK but the trail maps are sold separately

Y70%

I love this app. It is very detailed I like the photos, it's very easy to follow. Geat job Sandra. I have only lived in Florida for 2 years and I have been waiting for an app like this to come along.

Y70%

I love this app. It works so well that I, a legally blind person, can hike independently!

Y70%
by Y####:

So I bought the paper guide made by you guys and am a active member of FTA. You want to charge me again for the app??!!?? That is ridiculous. Find a way to give me content I have already paid for and not just some she'll app and 5 stars. If not I will Uninstall shortly. No one charges you for both paperback and digital copy of ANYTHING.

V70%
by V####:

Searching for water is not fun. It sure would have been nice to know that this app was not complete. I am more than a little upset with this

K70%
by K####:

This is the Guthook app for those of you that are familiar with that platform. I'm legally blind and I hike these trails solo because of how easy this app is to use.
