Guthook's Guide to the Appalachian Trail is a detailed, map-based smartphone guide for your hike on the Appalachian Trail or the Long Trail. It maps and lists thousands of important hiker waypoints on the AT (and hundreds for the Long Trail) such as water sources, shelters, tenting sites, road crossings, resupply locations, and many others.
NO PHONE OR INTERNET SERVICE IS REQUIRED to use Guthook's Guides after the initial setup. Guthook's Guides use a combination of your smartphone's GPS, downloaded topo maps, and the Google Maps interface to accurately locate your position on the trail. Your phone's GPS pinpoints your location on the downloaded topo maps.
The free demo covers the 8.8-mile Springer Mountain Approach Trail from Amicalola Falls State Park to Springer Mountain southern terminus. The demo is fully function with all features of the paid version. In-app purchases include 9 sections of the AT and the Long Trail in Vermont.
A bright red line indicates the location of the main trail on the map. Side spurs to water sources or other points of interest are indicated in other colors. Waypoints of interest to the hiker are plotted on the map. Tap on the trail to get mileage and elevation data.
The elevation profile shows trail distance vs elevation and plots your current location on the trail. Each waypoint is plotted on the profile. Each waypoints is clickable, opening to the waypoint's detail page.
The guidebook lists every waypoint in order by distance along the trail and how far away you are from each waypoint.
Send your current location to friends and family via text message or e-mail.

Much of the Long Trail overlaps the AT through the State of Vermont. Many hikers complete the entire trail in one season ("thru-hikers"), and countless others enjoy hiking anywhere from a few miles to hundreds of miles each year.

Using for my '17 thru hike. Start 3/29. Great features, love the running comments, especially re: water sources, pics of way points, GPS exactly where in my daily route I'll be and how the pace is going, do I need to step it up or can I dial it back. Several mapping layers, sat view. Exactly what I want and a damn good deal for the package. Pretty valuable, reasonably current trail intelligence for fair price.

I was relying on this for trip planning until I reached the Delaware River to Great Barrington section and found no info on hotels post offices or even towns which made it useless for planning resupply.

The app is excellent can be used offline with maps and can plan your trip out to the day. You can also use the app to find all of the water sources at least as up-to-date as it can possibly be well worth the money.

This app is a great one stop shop. Used it several times for multi day section hikes on the AT. Also has outlines of other trails near me and I have used it as a basic navigation tool on those. This just keeps getting better with the updates. It is getting very close to all I need for info while on the trail.

App does not have even the most basic off-trail info such as groceries or Post Office or even if a road goes into town, which is why I gave it one star. A guidebook is all you really need for thru-hiking the AT. The app will just drain you battery.

a fellow hiker had an Iphone and had her travels mapped as if traveling in elevation. on my android it only shows me traveling in breadcrumbs. is there a way to map as if in elevation. in the map portion of the app. thanks jeff
