مقدمة المؤلف
نحمدك يا من أوضحت لنا سبل الهداية، وأزحت عن بصائرنا غشاوة الغواية، ونصلي ونسلم على من أرسلته شاهدا ومبشرا ونذيرا، وداعيا إلى الله بإذنه وسراجا منيرا، وعلى الأصحاب الذين هجروا الأوطان يبتغون من الله الفضل والرضوان، والأنصار الذين آووا ونصروا وبذلوا لإعزاز الدين ما جمعوا وما ادخروا.
أما بعد، فيقول محمد الخضري ابن المرحوم الشيخ عفيفي الباجوري: كنت أجد من نفسي منذ النشأة الأولى ارتياحا لقراءة تواريخ السالفين وقصص الغابرين، وأجدها لعقل الإنسان أحسن مهذب، وأنصح معلم، وكنت أرى في تاريخ نبينا -عليه الصلاة والسلام- وما لقيه من أذى قومه حينما دعاهم إلى الحق، وعظيم صبره حتى هجر أوطانه وبلاده، أعظم مرب لأفكار المسلمين، فإنه يدلهم على ما يجب اتباعه، وما يلزم اجتنابه، ليسودوا كما ساد سابقوهم، وخصوصا ما يتعلق بالحكام، من اجتذاب النفوس النافرة، والتأليف بين القلوب المختلفة، وما يتعلق بقواد الجيوش، من تأليف الرجال وإحكام المعدات حتى يتم لهم النصر على أعدائهم، وما يتعلق بالعامة من اتحاد قلوبهم وصيرورتهم يدا على من سواهم فكنت أجد من قراءتها ارتياحا عظيما وكانت نفسي كثيرا ما تأسف على ترك المسلمين لها، فقلما أجد من يشتغل بها، ولكني كنت أقدم لهم العذر بتطويل الكتب المؤلفة في هذا الموضوع، فلما قدمت مدينة المنصورة جمعتني النوادي مع محمود بك سالم، القاضي بمحكمة المنصورة المختلطة، فوجدت منه علما بدينه تقف دونه فحول الرجال، وتتأخر عن مسابقته فيه الأبطال، فقلما توضع مسألة دينية إلا وجدته مبرزا1 فيها، مفصحا عن الجواب عنها؛ أما علمه بسيرة الرسول الأكرم صلى الله عليه وسلم فعنده منها الخبر اليقين، وكنت كثيرا ما أسمعه يتشوف لعمل سيرة خالية من الحشو والتعقيد تنتفع بها عامة المسلمين،
