Herald Scotland for Android
You'll get access to Scotland's best journalism with the latest Scottish news, sport and opinion, plus the Herald's renowned coverage of business, politics, arts and culture. And of course the famous Diary is there too.
The app is free to download. To access you need to sign up to the phone or tablet subscription package on the heraldscotland website. Then just sign in with your heraldscotland details and enjoy.
Key features:
Latest news updated continually throughout the day.
Offline reading of downloaded articles.
Ability to change font size.
If this app actually worked it would be a below average news app with very limited functionality, almost zero opportunity to customise or tailor content, some niggly bugs, & an overly touch sensitive interface, but one that did the job of allowing you to access the Herald without having to try to navigate their ad-ridden horrorshow of a website on your phone. However, as this app doesn't work properly and has to be freshly reinstalled EVER SINGLE DAY, it is actually worse than useless. Do not download.
Unable to close app.
Just white screen. Uninstalled then reinstalled but still the same
The interface overhaul is good! But the Android back button isn't taking me from an article back to the feed, and it should!
Nowhere to create an account!
Won't even start in Android 7.1.1 - reported.... Last update 2015 - really?
Would prefer use of back button.
Interface much better and more visually appealing. Downloading is much crisper and transparent when process finished. Still a tad on the slow side moving between categories and articles. If this can be sorted it would merit 5*.
This is a great deal, and I love reading the paper wherever I am like this, but the app requires reinstalling every few days, which is a pain.
Unable to use the Android back button to navigate. Unable to view in landscape mode. Headlines truncated despite plenty of unused whitespace. No indication of story date or author in header. No ability to customise order and visibility of news sections. Infrequent, but annoying, appearances of old articles in news sections. Basically, make it more like the Guardian app.
Pretty CRAP... Download the app, but nowhere to register so I can use it... DOH..!
The interface overhaul is good! But the Android back button isn't taking me from an article back to the feed, and it should!
Now includes all sections, though you don't have the option to hide any of them through your profile. Incredibly irritating that the back button doesn't function - you have to use the app back-arrow which means two handed use. Some stories linger for days so it's really annoying that the dateline is at the bottom of the article, not the top, so it isn't easy to ignore out of date material. I will finally start using the app rather than reading in a browser on my phone, though, so thanks for that.
Was working fine but last week stopped. Download appears to work but cannot scroll through the headlines. Articles do not open. Now have to use web browser to read articles. Update: Installed new version and still doesn"t work. After login, app tries to download content but then receive error 408 Request Timeout.
This has fixed the issues I was having since the last Android update. Menus and scrolling are a lot smoother. More article categories too...
Since I downloaded the last update the app doesn't work at all. Keeps telling me the connection has "timed out".
The new version was perfect initially but for the past couple of days I have been unable to refresh the content. Like the previous reviewer I get an error 408 message. Update 28.7.15 - app is now working again, 2 minor niggles but otherwise is very good ; have to use the app back button, can't use the one at the bottom of the tablet screen ; and the text under each news item on the main screen is very brief and often truncated.
Asks for pw but impossible to assecc
My daily news is back! Great update. The scrolling issues have been fixed and the variety of content is better than before.
No registration link?
Please fix asap
Terrible. Keeps crashing. Can i have my subscription refunded?
Stopped working on S3 after last update.
Had to uninstall as it won't scroll since phone was upgraded to lollipop 5.1... What's the point of a subscription to something you can't access. Please please fix this.
Never before minded the basic nature of the app as it was always tolerable in the sense that it does what it says on the tin - no frills. However, the app has been unusable from this morning. Unable to scroll down and stories are not loading or are unreadable.
Pages are illegible and don't scroll. Can I have my web& tab subscription back please?
I contacted the company and got the following reply: Please visit settings, and applications – Android System Webview. Uninstall the updates for Android System Webview as this is causing problems with hundreds of Apps including Herald Scotland.
Sometimes will not update with the lastest news and some stories stay on the recommended for months. Not a patch on the wonderful Guardian app which I don't have to pay a subscription for.
I can't scroll down through the screens. The screen springs back to the top. Unusable.
Usually doesn't work
You can't read or scroll through stories. When you tap the only two stories that are visible the interface and text is garbled.
This app has more bugs than an ant hill. It frequently won't update, often crashes and sometimes freezes. I'm not even sure why they ask you to update anyway, surely the latest news should be available whenever you log into the app?
I have to ask myself why I still have an online subscription when the app is so abysmal. Is it too much to ask that it stops jumping back to the first article after every time you read a different one. Online comments are such a large feature these days but are only available on the desktop site - poor. Oh, and it doesn't close down on a Samsung 10.1 tablet.
For last week or so, completely unusable and I'm paying good money. Please fix it!
Stopped working when I upgraded my Nexus 7 to Android 5 (Lollipop)
Scrolling down the feed is jerky and horrible. Going back from an article takes you to the top instead of saving your place: this app needs an overhaul.
Not smooth and does not navigate readily
Don't waste your time
They don't tell you the Android app is phone only so it won't run on a Nexus 7 if you subscribe to the web & tablet deal. Once I changed to web & phone it was OK. The margins in landscape view are too wide so it doesn't look very good. Otherwise it's OK but a bit clunky. The Grauniad app is much better but the content is irrelevant in Scotland.

After many reinstall attempts. Never could get this app to open. Is it any good?
