Learn Chinese - HelloChinese for Android
Very glad I've found this app on the first spot. I've been very often wondering how Chinese works (the language, well maybe the people too ;-) and really, this app make it easy to learn. The writing is the most difficult I think. It's very well done by the way. I wish there would be a sort of library somewhere where we could only train writing. I didn't try the mini games yet so that could be there. The app is also very entertaining and gives motivation to learn more. Guys, you do a great job! Keep up the good work! Thank you :-)
Can't recommend this enough. Covers reading, writing, speaking and listening, w/ lots of review to reinforce the lesson. The leaping Confucius always makes me smile, bonus! :) Just wish and hope the developers would consider doing Intermediate (and even Advanced!) levels! Thank you for a fun and useful app.
This is the best app that I have found so far for learning Mandarin Chinese...and I have tried a lot of them! I really like the Tips and Notes pages that give you additional insights and perspective on the section you are studying. I also like the Train section to help study listening comprehension. I think there could/should be more of this in the app...as this is one of the hardest skills to acquire for myself. My only complaint is that I wish the font scaled up when you move up to larger screens. For example, It is really difficult to read the text/characters when studying on my tablet. Wish you could make the font bigger.
So far, the app is great for beginners. Has easy to follow lessons that can be completed in 5 minutes, fun side games, great explanations on grammar, and some basic character practice. I don't understand the the premium aspect. It's $60 p year, and a complete ripoff. Stick with the free version.
Definitely a helpful app for learning chinese. I've tried many chinese learning app and this app is the best. It has speaking exercises, characters exercises, minigames and even video courses. Lol
LESSONS + GAMES + VIDEOS = BEST CHINESE LANGUAGE APP! I can't say enough positive things about Hello Chinese. With their integrated learning systems, it's fun and easy to learn. And they are supportive thru feedback, email, all the way! 我爱 学习 汉语!! Hello Chinese,谢谢。
As a returning student of Chinese after a few years hiatus, I can see this is a fantastic app for new speakers. The "Notes" feature is the best tool I've seen for learning colloquial Chinese and not sounding like a textbook. I also don't feel pressured to pay money. Great app!
This is the best Chinese learning app I have found. My only complaint is that it is not so good at teaching the Chinese characters. The app just makes you draw a character once in a while - and then it never asks you for that character again, meaning that I forget the character immediately. IMO, learning characters should be a separate series of lessons, AND the app would need to keep asking you to redraw and recognize the characters you have already learned. Only then is there a hope of retention. The rest of the app is good, though.
Almost perfect app. Real shame there is no way to compete with friends as I have found this to be the most fun and reliable source of motivation. In the spirit of competition... your main competition is the "Chinese skill" app, which although it seems weaker has kept me better due to this feature. Anyway you can expand this?
Utter rubbish!!!mother, father etc ARE NOT the first words an adult learner needs, and no flexibility in the order one can access lessons. And a HUGE app and STILL have to download more for each lesson. Waste of time.
This app is really good! Omg, I've never really imagine that I would actually enjoy learning Chinese because after trying different apps to learn Japanese and Korean it just gets me lazy and I don't learn anything. But this, omg this is a miracle. This app is the best.
I just began using this, and I tested several apps. This one actually teaches you pinyin (the pronunciation using Latin alphabet) and the tones to go with it. It's a very good place to be for us who know nothing about the Chinese language.
Towards the end where it asked you to fill in the translation, there's no option to write the character. You can only do it in pinyin assuming you have the correct symbols already in your keyboard which I find annoying. I should be able to write the character of the word or words. Also comma when it asks you for the words from the audio, there is no sound coming out. So you can only guess what was just said
I'm just trying to self teach for no particular reason. So far it's been a fairly easy app to follow. The character writing or pronunciation being the more difficult for me. I already speak, read & write English & Spanish fluently, & bits of others, so this may be an advantage. UPDATE 3-15-17 I really am picking it up. I slacked off a couple wks, but didn't lose much. This is my favorite Mandarin app by far. I'm using Samsung Note 4
Fantastic and fun! The effort that went into showing how signs are written must have been great! It's what I always struggles with most, but this app shows the direction of every stroke.
Very helping me. But sometimes i pronounce it right but it keep say it's false while there's no different between the example and my voice, meanwhile i pronounce it wrong, it tick me right
Pleasee make translate to indonesian language too. Little bit confusion if the translation is just english:( But overall, i reallyyyyy reaallyy like this application. Keep beneficial
I've been using the app for about 4 months now and it's really good. I find the lessons interesting and repetitive (ie within the lesson words you've learnt will be repeated to keep them in your mind) which is a good thing. Listening skills and speech recognition are really good too, very useful for a complete beginner.
Really like it. I was afraid that i can not learn Chinese myself. But now hopefully will learn and speak a d write. I guess 1 hour daily and 3 month total you can speak basic Chinese language.
I used hello chinese first and now using this to review things ive learned. I like the way that the words and sentences are much more reinforced and each lesson has a good mix of questions and speaking
Excellent learning app. You learn all the skills of the language and can even turn off the pinyin when ready. Sometimes some words or phrases can be difficult to remember in subsequent lessons. But that's probably unavoidable when learning a new language.
I really don't know what to say except that I wish more language learning apps were structured like Hello Chinese. The format is great, concise & gives you the information relevant to the lesson and /builds/ on your comprehension the more you progress. I used to think 中文 was difficult to learn, but because Hello Chinese is so interactive and well-developed you really don't feel overwhelmed. IT HAS TONE GAMES TO TRAIN YOUR EAR FOR THE 5 TONES I FREAKING LOVE IT! 10/10 recommend!
An all rounder in training the language. Teaches you about the distinct tones, brush strokes and listens to how you pronounce the words. It tells you what part of the sentence you have pronounced incorrectly. I'm in love!
I am a beginner and this app is great. Best thing is it addresses al features but in a slow pace with a lot of repeats so it sticks better. I use it every day for 30 min and i am quite happy with the progress i m making. This app is so user friendly and makes learning chinese fun!
Simple and fun to learn basic Chinese characters, phrases, tones, pronunciation, and stroke order (Simplified & Traditional). Not frustratingly difficult like some programs/apps. Not too simple.
I've really enjoyed learning Chinese with this app. The introduction to words seems at a good pace. I wish there was an option to turn off Pinyin for some of the review exercises, to try to become less dependent on the romanization and more comfortable with the Traditional Chinese characters. Edit: I appreciate the dev reaching out so quickly at my plight. After receiving notice that I can tweak any of the exercises to display only traditional characters, I've nearly memorized the first 150 available in the app. After this app, I'll be looking to start some elementary reading to develop my comprehension. Thanks again for the free app!
So far so good. The basics are nice. While I'm not interested in reading and writing, seeing characters written was surprisingly nice! Love that the reviews allow you to write numerical tones or actual PinYin in your answers. Great app guys!
Great app. The only thing I would add is power bars like in Duolingo that show you're becoming weak in a certain area if you haven't practiced it in awhile.
I was skeptical at first that an app could really help me to improve my Chinese, but now I am in love with HelloChinese. The vocabulary relevant, the voice is clear and the lessons are em to entertaining (all the entertaining a lesson can be). I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning Chinese
Amazing learning tool and I have tried many. I really like the variety and way it builds on itself. Shame it is limited to 500 in vocabulary. It is a fun and intuitive app and I like the review sections.
Good so far! Says in-app purchases, which i haven't seen an hour in. May change my mind if cost is high
Freaking brilliant. Cracked myself up and learned something in the process. I'm no language expert, but seems to me to be a simple, fun & logical approach to learning.
Been trying to learn for a while but I always get bored or disinterested. This kept me both entertained and engaged. Great app!
I'm really impressed with how comprehensive this app is. They've come up with some very fun and painless ways to help you enjoy the repetition necessary to commit these lessons to memory as well as clever ways to associate written, spoken, and heard words to their meanings. I've always wanted to really learn a foreign language and this is the first time I've felt hope that I will make significant progress. I wish they had apps for other languages. And if I were still dating my Chinese girlfriend, I wish they had an English version for her.
Easy to use. I didn't explore it all but I guess it's good as an introduction to Chinese, not much for advanced learners.
I'm really enjoying using this app! The tips and notes are really helpful and make a lot of sense, and I like the mix of reading, writing, speaking and listening. It took me a while to understand how the review works, but I like that too. I feel like I'm learning something, and it's fun :)
Awesome!! But sometimes audio doesn't work on some screens even though it was working just a moment ago. Must be a small bug somewhere
Best Chinese learning app there is for pinyin. This app. Teaches you how to sound the "finals" which is describe as similar to our vowels but don't think they sound the same although some do. And then they have the "initials" equivalent to our constanants. It sounds them I our. I WOULD SUGGEST TAKING LOTS OF TIME LEARNING THE SOUNDS EACH MAKE AND THEN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO READ CHINESE PINYIN AND SOUND IT OUT..
This is easy to use. I signed up for a college chinese course but this app I think is teaching me more in a more fun way than chinese 101 was. The games are fun, the grammar makes sense, and it's easy to practice. I just wish I could stop part way through a lesson and it would save my spot but that's very minor. Awesome app over all.

This seems to be a really good way of learning Chinese. After a big download, it all works without internet. I've only been trying it for a week, but I'm really impressed with my progress. ADDITION March 2017 Apparently it does sometimes need connection to the internet and the app just refused to go onto the next lesson when this happened. It was okay again when I had an internet connection. The developer was very fast to respond to my question about this and I would recommend both the app and the developer as being outstandingly good.
