Wifi Roaming Fix for Android
This solves the WiFi roaming problem very well. Switches take about 30 seconds. Suggest using WiFi Analyzer to verify switching is taking place.
It works, however it seems that it works differently on different smartphones with different version numbers of Android operating system. Mine is 4.4 KitKat, and it takes a while to switch between APs even when near a repeater, and a program icon is not switched off, and a program is run and even not swiped away from a list of recently opened ones. On the funny side, it shows that I have 3 APs with the same name although I have a router and a repeater only, however it's also shown in other software, so it has to be an issue with setting up a repeater.
Wifi roaming fix stops scanning after a minute or so without a connection. I presume this is to conserve battery life. On mesh networks with little overlap, this causes a huge dead zone, which this app could easily fix if it had an increased timeout or allowed the user to adjust the timeout. This is the only reason for 3-stars. It works great in standard mesh networks (those with heavy overlap).
I am running a ruckus zd1100 and several various models of ruckus access points in my house via mesh connections. My Asus tf101 wouldn't roam form one to the other unless my signal was extremely weak. Its great being able to set the signal threshold of roaming aggressiveness on my android!
Awesome! But the persistent notification in the notification bar takes much longer to update which channel it is currently using (while it has already changed in the INFO page)... eg. at place A, "Wifi X 13" and then i move to place B where the closest wifi is channel 1, the notification still displays "Wifi X 13" even though the INFO page says the app has already switched to channel 1. Other than that, so far, perfect :) thanks!
I have 3 access points on the same SSID on different channels. Switches between them as I roam around. So annoying without it. Have now changed my mind about this app. It seems to be associated with my Nexus 7 freezing. Am going to uninstall and see if the issue goes away.
It does work, reconnecting to the stronger signal. But my OnePlus One won't turn WiFi on at all after a short period of use. Having to uninstall I'm afraid.
Does what it says but it would be good if you could set it only to do so with specific named SSIDs. I.e. I want it just at home not at work. So it shoud allow me to give an SSID to roam on and not on all others.
Running Android 7.0 on a LG G5. Was having issues with my phone not switching to the stronger signal on my home network which consists of two routers (main and AP). The app solved the issue but I noticed that my wifi would randomly shut off and not turn back on unless I manually did so. I did not have the issue with the app turned off. I have the WiFi set to be always on during sleep and turned off the"smart" feature of using mobile data when wifi does not have internet. I haven't been able to fix the issue.
Just works. Provided all ap's are set up correctly (use WPS to clone them if available to ensure this) it's install and forget. It will drop a VOIP call when it switches AP but this is unavoidable without enterprise grade WiFi in the building.
This is working well on my Galaxy S5 with 6.0.1 I have multiple APS with a common SSID and was frustrated by my device sticking on slow connections. This appeares to have addressed it. Wish it had a small widget showing channel and signal strength. Thanks for a neat app.
It takes about 3 seconds to change between networks, which is irrelevant, unless you're streaming. Devices tested for at least a month: Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro, Huawei Ascend P1, Wiko Wax, BQ Aquaris E4 and E4.5, Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 and BQ Edison 3 3G.
Shocked and annoyed that Android (Kitkat) does not seem to support WiFi roaming natively. This tool worked on my OnePlus One without any issues.
Nexus 4 on Slimkat 4.4.4. It works ok but sometimes it crashes Wi-Fi function, Wi-Fi won't start after powering it on... Only a soft reboot fixes. May be just a kernel or driver problem.
Let's me roam about the house and outside with two extenders and stay connected to the one with the best signal. Really surprising Android doesn't have better support for roaming, but glad this app fixes the problem!
My phone would disconnect between access points and this app seems to help. Using WiFi calling from one end to the other end of the network was seamless. Wasn't able to do that before. Thank you developer!
This guy's are God sent. I had a project where my client need to have 20 mobile devices for Waiters in a Restaurant to roaming smoothly without loosing connection as they move from one AP to another. It was almost ending into frustration till I stumbled on this app. And the developer did this for free! God bless them all.
Superbly fixes Android's native inability to roam correctly between like-named SSIDs. The "Slow AP Change" option is perfect for that area where you in between two APs with similar strengths. Thanks Heleron!
This app took a very laggy handshake between AP when roaming to be nearly seemless on my HTC One M8. Great work.
This app worked fine on my htc one but I found that the app stopped working on my Huawei P8 with Android 5.0.1 every time it went to standby. What you have to do is go to >settings and >protected apps then set Wi-Fi roaming fix as a protected app. It then remains in the background permanently. Sorted!
I've had a problem with phone losing wifi signal when it goes to sleep(android 5.1). I've tried few "wifi lock" apps but they didn't help at all. But this app fixed that problem instantly, even though it isn't its primary goal. Thanks a lot, great job!!
You can get as defensive as you like about people's network configurations but I have 2 identically configured (except channels) ap's and this detects them all but does not switch between them.
This is awesome, I'm one of Cisco Systems advanced services engineers working on high density WiFi in stadiums this helps no end with my optimisation testing and tuning. I'm surprised this hasn't been picked up by a phone manufacturer it makes the whole WiFi experience much better for the end user.
l installed this app to facilitate roaming between APs in my home WPA2-PSK network, which didn't happen automatically. However it caused highly unstable connection at work where we have a WPA2-EAP (TLS) network. Additionally the installed security certificates for the TLS authentication were deleted whenever the connection was disconnected. Uninstalling the app made the EAP network stable again.
Works great with 4 UniFi AP-AC on two floors! Before this app my samsung S4 switches between AP every one or two minutes. Now everything is fine, no annoying reconnections anymore! Excellent work guys!
My signal is either 4 or 5 bars between 2 routers. So the signal never gets very low. When I installed this app it has trouble because it is constantly switching back and forth back and forth. It takes 5 or 6 "connecting" attempt before it actually switches routers. Then in a few seconds it tried 5 or 6 more times to connect back to the other. So it is causing wifi to not work stable since it's always switching and never stays on one. This happens when I'm in between both routers with equal signal strength.
It works on my Motorola Droid Turbo with Android 5.1 as expected, I suppose. There is one downside of it, when AP is switched while I'm moving across the house the phone loses Wi-Fi for the the short switch period (~1sec) and connection changes to 4G. For the short period of time during the switch the phone also shows no inet connection. I guess an open socket might terminate then, or some extra mobile data can be consumed. Slow AP change is somewhat helpful to mitigate the issue, and I guess roaming shall work seamlessly if done by WiFi driver itself. But given the lack of decent drivers this app is very helpful.
But it doesn't work for me. On my phone when I move near a stronger wifi signal I see the app turn off/on the wifi to connect to the new one. Unfortunately it never actually connects. I have to manually pick the network to connect. If I restart the wifi manually it does what the app is supposed to do.
Installed routers at each end of my house and my Galaxy Tab switches seamlessly to the router with the best signal. This has fixed a 2 year issue of purchasing expensive routers and signal amplifiers but never finding a satisfactory solution. Thank you.
Switches too slow on my Nexus 7. Shuts off WiFi then takes about 30 seconds to reconnect. This interrupts streaming video and audio. I uninstalled it.
It could be clearer as to to its status and needs, I just upgraded my 1 star review to 4 star after having another look. I'd give it 5 star if it showed more info and better formatted. Decisions it makes should be logged (at least optionally and certainly when) in the "Info" screen. All things being equalish it doesn't seem to prefer my 5 GHz SSID over the 2.4 GHz one which is much slower, probably should the able to "weigh" preferences. I don't know if its a router issue (I'll upgrade it an see) but if it goes to one router the ip address is correctly updated, but if it goes the other the phone keeps the old (now incorrect) ip address.... Channel information displayed in notification wrong when connected to 5Ghz, shows previous 2.4Ghz Channel.
Does not work well with repeaters, only access points. Seems very sensitive to signal strength, which is a problem if you have many access points--I have three. Also, uses a lot of battery. If you can handle these issues, it works.
Works fine but it causes a lot of annoying lag on my Nvidia shield during game streams. I had to uninstall it.
At last, someone read the specification and implemented WiFi roaming accordingly. Was it really that hard, or why did it take so long? Anyway, many thanks to the developer, this tool does exactly what it is supposed to.
This app does exactly what I wanted -- when I move around my house (with 3 APs) it forces Android to switch to the strongest AP.
This works really well, but it uses A LOT of battery on my Galaxy S5. In battery usage, it shows it using the most with 33%, even more than the screen! My battery would be more than 90% on a normal day by now, but because of the wifi roaming fix app, it is at 60%!
Jumps (disconnects/connects) between WiFi APs with same SSID to maintain best connectivity. I can now roam around extended network without dropping VOIP calls. I use centralized static DHCP address server to prevent IP change on reconnect. Suggest you run 'WiFi Connection Manager' app to confirm behavior. This should be part of core Android! Would be even better if aggressiveness was tunable as in Windows.
App working great on a ZTE GXI (android 4.0.4). Device didn't automatically roam before, I had to set it manually from one AP to the other and then it would even ask for the passphrase (again) which was very annoying. Thanks!

Does what it says (and is free so no complaints), but there isn't a lot to choose with configuration options. In our house we run two APs with 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz bands. I had left the 2.4 band running for long distance coverage outside. However, that leads to situations when this app connects to the slower 2.4 network and stays there (because the signal is stronger?). May try disabling the lower frequency band.
