Campeonato Carioca de Futebol de 2017 será 116ª edição da elite do futebol no Rio de Janeiro.
Com um novo formato, a primeira fase será disputada por seis clubes (grupo A): os quatro times de pior campanha no ano anterior (exceto os rebaixados) mais os dois promovidos da Série B de 2016. Os dois melhores colocados avançam para a fase principal e as outras quatro agremiações disputam o quadrangular do rebaixamento. Os dois piores do quadrangular caem para a Série B do ano seguinte.

Já a fase principal será dividida em dois grupos de seis equipes cada (grupos B e C), havendo dois turnos (Taça Guanabara e Taça Rio) com semifinais e finais em jogos únicos. A partir desta edição, os campeões de cada turno garantem vaga para as semifinais da competição, e não mais para a final, como acontecia antigamente. Os outros dois semifinalistas serão as equipes melhores colocadas na classificação geral fora as campeãs dos turnos e desconsiderando os pontos obtidos nas semifinais e finais dos turnos. Caso um time vença tanto a Taça Guanabara quanto a Taça Rio, os três melhores classificados completam a disputa por vagas na grande decisão.

Nas semifinais dos turnos, os times com melhores campanhas nos grupos terão vantagem do empate. Na semifinal do campeonato, quem avança com igualdade no placar serão os campeões de cada turno. Em nenhuma final há a vantagem do empate. A semifinal geral será realizada em jogo único, enquanto a final terá ida e volta.

With a new format, the first phase will be played for six clubs (group A): four times worse campaign in the previous year (excluding the demoted) plus the two promoted from Serie B in 2016. The two best placed to advance the phase principal and the other four associations vying for the quadrangular relegation. The two worse quadrangular fall to Serie B the following year.

Already the main phase will be divided into two groups of six teams each (Groups B and C), with two turns (Guanabara Cup and Rio Cup) with semifinals and finals in single games. From this edition, the champions of each shift job guarantee to the semifinals of the competition, and not to the end, as in the past. The other two semifinalists will be the best placed teams in the overall standings out the winners of shifts and disregarding the points obtained in the semifinals and end of shifts. If a team wins both the Guanabara Cup as the Rio Cup, the three best teams complete the competition for places in the big decision.

In the semifinals of shifts, the teams with the best campaigns in the groups will lead the tie. In the semifinal of the championship, who advances with the score level will be the champions of each shift. In no end there is the advantage of the draw. The general semifinal will be held in a single game, while the final will return.
