Cute Styrofoam Holiday Tree Tutorial

Pretty country-cozy fabrics transform foam cones into this sweet homespun Christmas accent. Change it up with other color combos for a completely different look - red and white or pink and green would be striking.

STYROFOAM Brand Foam
Ball, 5"Cone, 9" x 4"

Other Materials
Brown acrylic paint
Coordinating fabrics, eight different prints/solid
Quilt batting
Wooden dowel, 1/2" x 5"Wooden heart buttons, six

Tools
Serrated knife
Candle stub or paraffin
Sharp pencil
Ruler
Small putty knife
Medium flat paintbrush
Disposable palette
Water basin
Paper towels
Scissors
Sewing needle and coordinating thread
Straight pins
Iron and pressing cloth
Low-temp glue gun and glue sticks
Thick, white craft glue
Optional: Sewing machine

Instructions
1. Cut one 2-1/2" x 16" strip from three different fabrics. Cut one 2-1/2" x 15" strip from three additional fabrics. Cut one 2-1/2" x 6" strip from two remaining fabrics.

2. Sew fabric strips right sides together along short ends using a 3/8" seam. Begin with longest strips and work toward shortest strips. This will create a single fabric strip 2-1/2" wide and 3 yards long. Press seams flat.

3. Cut several 3"-wide batting strips; piece strips together as needed to achieve 3-yd. length. Tightly roll batting lengthwise and use glue gun to secure seam.

4. Place batting in center of wrong side of fabric strip.Bring one side of fabric up snugly against batting and glue in place. Bring opposite edge up and glue, overlapping first edge slightly. Work down length of fabric to create single 3-yd. stuffed tube.

5. Glue and pin one end of fabric tube along bottom edge of foam cone. Wind and glue fabric around cone, keeping rows close together. Wind top end around itself and glue end down into space created at top.

6. Paint dowel brown and let dry.

7. Wax serrated knife with candle stub or paraffin. Cut foam ball in half; set aside one half for future project. Divide remaining half-ball into six equal segments; draw over lines firmly with sharp pencil.

8. Cut pattern pieces as indicated, cutting on appropriate line. Glue batting to centers of base segments. Trim batting even with bottom edge.

9. Center one fabric piece over one batting-covered segment.Use putty knife to carefully push excess fabric straight down into pencil lines scored in foam. Repeat until all segments are covered. Trim excess fabric along segment seams. Glue excess fabric along bottom edge to bottom of foam base.

10. Push sharp pencil straight down into center top of base;wiggle slightly to enlarge hole for dowel. Drizzle glue into hole and insert dowel. Make second hole in center bottom of foam cone; glue top of dowel into bottom of cone.

11. Sew thread through button holes and glue buttons to cone.Cut six 3/8" x 6" strips from solid fabric and tie into bows; glue bows to cone above buttons.
