اسمه احمد بن الحسين. وكنيته أبو الفضل، ولقبه بديع الزمان.. وقد ولد في همذان ،واستقر في خراسان ، ومات في مدينة هراة.

 أما لقب بديع الزمان فلا ندري إن كان من صنعه أم من صنع الثعالبي صاحب يتيمة الدهر الذي قال:‏ هو بديع الزمان، ومعجزة همذانا‏ 

معلمه الأول أبو الحسن احمد بن فارس وقد غادر بلده في الثانية عشرة من عمره.‏ ولما بلغ الري اتصل بالصاحب ابن عباد ولزم دار كتبه فتأثر بتلك المدرسة وبأساليبها .. ولأنه صاحب ذاكرة قوية وحافظة نادرة فقد استفاد كثيرا مما قرأ... تطبيق عربي جديد و لا تنسوا التقييم.
