The OpenSLMediaPlayer library offers a compatible class of Android's MediaPlayer class.
Not just a re-implementation, also provides some enhanced features;

App is a great example of the performance capabilities of both java and native music player implementations. The code is impressive! AND YOU CAN SELECT THE FFT WINDOW TO BE APPLIED TO THE AUDIO WAVE TOO! :) that is sweet. The fft could be trimmed down, frequencies above a certain amount give basically a flat line at all times.
