About 8Tones

8Tones is a simple but limited app where users can create 8-bit music/chiptune music on the go!

For further update, please check my Twitter profile @NovaGT7

Due to popular demands on exporting the project, I have updated the app so that you can export it to Famitracker. With Famitracker you can easily export WAV and NSF files.

FEATURES

• Create 8-bit music

• 5 channels
-- channel 0 - square 50%
-- channel 1 - square 25%
-- channel 2 - square 25%
-- channel 3 - triangle
-- channel 4 - beats/noise

• Tracker like interface (if you have ever used Famitracker this can be very easy to learn)

• Faster editing with piano rolls!

• Customizable interface like accent colors and background

• Famitracker (http://famitracker.com/) compatibility! This app export text files that's importable via Famitracker! You can export NSF/WAV files via Famitracker!

• Ability to publish/listen to songs from the internet

Confused? Go to this website for more info:
http://www.guovagames.com/8toneshelp.html

or simply select HELP on the main menu.

Due to this app is developed with Game Maker Studio, it's impossible to save your current project as MP3 or WAV files. The only way to save is to export text files, but text files are capable exporting as WAV/NSF files on a third party software on PC. Please read the guide at our website: http://www.guovagames.com/8toneshelp.html

Online Accounts with cloud backups coming soon!

PERMISSIONS:
- Read phone status and identity: this permission is something I cannot remove due to the engine limitations, hopefully I can remove it in the future
- Locations: I can't remove this either
- Modify device storage: save data and export text files for Famitracker
- Network access: publish/listen to music online, In-app purchases

Also available for iOS and Windows Mobile/Phone!

This is the first program that I have tried that can make 8-bit music, and it's decent to say the least. It's lacking, though, and these faults can be realized quickly. For one, each file is incredibly limited. I was hoping I could make a chiptune version of a song, but I couldn't even get past the opening instrumental with the first file. The second fault, which is quite major, is that files cannot be exported directly onto the phone. The app will be more appealing once these points are dealt with!

I have been composing with flstudio and famitracker for quite some time now, and when i found an app that was basically mobile Famitracker, I thought it was too good to be true. And, in a compositional sense, it was. The software has too much latency (Which, considering we are dealing with rhythm here, isn't good.) Every time i make even a simple drum beat, it turns into a swing tempo. And, it's a loose cannon when it comes to how and when it'll have latency between the notes. Sorry, but i'll stick with FT.

This app is easy to get into and once I figured it out, I loved it. I can easily make music, the controls are simple and I understood everything. The price to share music is reasonable. One small complaint: could the background be given a wider range of values? The contrast is a little bit eye-straining, but that could be just me. I like the customizable accent, though, definitely a cool feature.

8tones is a portable famitracker, so to say. However, my main gripe is that the songs are played through the engine with swing to it. It doesnt bother me too much but itd be nice to have it fixed. That, and I have to pay to publish songs. /.-./ TLDR:good, but fix the swingy tempo

Great app but I'm having a problem with saving it as a text file. It worked the first time but after that I kept getting an error message and then it crashes. If I could get some help with that it would be great!

This is a great app for me to get down a tune relatively easily, and the chiptune "instruments" (chipstunestruments?) are good quality. However, there seems to be a bit of irregular rhythm whenever I play back my tune. Also, I would love to be able to change the save directory, so it wouldn't save a text file to a place that may or may not exist. I'll definitely use this app quite a bit in the near future, but if those features are fixed/added, I'll use it a LOT more.

The app itself is pretty nice to use, the only problem I have with it is the rhythm goes off often starting from tempo speed 07. Other than that, it's a great portable chiptune maker. :3

It's a good game, I can say that. You can make music with five different instruments. But the fact that you need to pay to share music is kinda ridiculous.

8Tones is literally the mobile cousin of Famitracker. I'm making the first ever version of Undertale's Bonetrousle on it, and I'm almost done within a few short days. That's how simple it is! (BTW, is it fine if I record my rendition and put it on YouTube?)

U70%

One minute it's fast... the next it isn't. The usability is perfect (for a FREE version) but you need to fix the tempo. A lot.

P70%

Some notes are off-key and it has serious trouble staying on-beat.

When I started the app after I got it FOR FREE, it says I haven't bought it. I clicked the Buy button to see where it goes. It just goes to this app.

Though I was hoping this created chiptune(nsf)-formatted files so I could load/play others, it's still a fun toy so I'm rating this for the work put into it.

I like the app, it works pretty well, but I feel the fact that you have to pay in order to publish your work makes it harder for some of the users to share their creations. It's also a shame you can't export your tunes as audio files.

I know it's small independent developer who takes hours of hard work to get the server up. I think the reason why publishing music must be paid for is because to reduce traffic to the developer's server and reduce of users publish junk music. Come on! You guys pay more on the junk food comparing to 99 cents!

The first time I opened it, it gave me an error message and froze my tablet. When I was actually able to open the app and use it, there was no sound! I had high hopes for this app, and I was let down.

Very exact 8-bit sound. If you're familiar with trackers you will easily figure out how to work in this app. The main flaw remains the same: it can't export tunes to sound files directly.

K70%
by K####:

On my phone, there was way too much latency, causing the music to essentially speed up and slow down randomly and inconsistently. I definitely don't have this problem with other music apps, and this was the dealbreaker for me. Otherwise, it seems like something fun to mess around with. I'm not as deeply into the 8-bit music thing, but it would've been fun to be able to demo any of my songs in this style.

I disliked the fact you only save your music on the app, I wanna be able to save it to my files on my phone. Sounds good though!

Best chiptune composer I've found. It would be nice to have custom wave instruments, but I'll understand if that isn't possible with GameMaker.

I am personally a HUGE fan of 8-bit music, and I was looking for an app to suit my needs, and WOAH this is perfect! ^w^

But is there another way to save it besides a .txt file

If the developer would continue developing, I'd consider a donation, because this app is so great. If he doesn't, I will contact him for the source code, this app is too great to be discontinued.
