About CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2017

The Good Beer Guide app is a service to help you find pubs in the UK that consistently serve cask conditioned real ale in good condition, as well as provide information about breweries and beers using information from the 2017 edition of the Good Beer Guide, UK's best-selling, independent guide to great beer and great pubs. With full reviews of 4,500 top pubs throughout the UK, as well as details of every real-ale brewery and their regular beers, the Good Beer Guide is published annually by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

This is a free app with an optional annual subscription of £4.99 per year. Without a subscription the app will have limited functionality allowing you to find the nearest pub and brewery to you.

By signing into your account, the subscription features of app can be used on more than one device, and cross-platform, without additional cost. (so long as the app is installed on all devices). The subscription will also transfer to the new GBG App that CAMRA is developing. See http://camra.org.uk/gbg-mobile

The Good Beer Guide is created through the work of thousands of volunteer CAMRA members resulting in an annual publication containing the top 4500 pubs that consistently serve well conditioned real ale.

Simple to use, Good Beer Guide Mobile for iPhone offers the following features:

Complete entries for over 4,500 independently-selected urban and rural pubs, giving details of beer, food, opening hours, accommodation, transport links, pub history, disabled access, facilities for families and more. The entire content of the pubs and brewery sections of the Good Beer Guide 2013 book is included in the subscribed version.

Fully independent pub reviews, written by local CAMRA members.

Unique tasting notes for regular beers, written by trained CAMRA tasting panels. Any regular beers served at a pub have the full tasting notes about that beer.

All the information is in the app so there is no need to be online when you search for a pub or brewery. You only need to be online to download updates or search from an address / postcode.

The My Guide feature makes it easy to keep tasting notes, favorites, visited pubs, or your own review of the pub. Save your favourite pubs in My Guide, so you can quickly go back to them later.

Search from your current location, a postcode, place name or London tube station.

Interactive maps within the app help you find your way. Launch the full Maps application to get step by step directions.

Changes to pubs that are reported to CAMRA between editions are automatically updated in the app.

In this update, all customers who bought an edition of the Good Beer Guide Mobile before September 2012, can view the 2012 Legacy Edition. This will work even if you don’t have a subscription to the current Guide. When you activate the Legacy Edition; Favourites,Visited Pubs and Comments from the 2012 Edition will be retrieved.
Older Editions may be made available in a future version together with Favourites,Visited Pubs and Comments for each edition, providing that the app has not been uninstalled since.

This version requires Android 2.3 'Gingerbread' or higher. Most handsets from 2010 or later can be upgraded to 2.3 (including Galaxy S). Updates were pushed over the air by most operators to phones in 2011. Check the Android settings to see if an upgrade is available.

Might as well use Trip Advisor : this guide does nothing to advance my knowledge of good beer or cover any of the country pubs I prefer to frequent. I had some regard for CAMRA .... but forget it. Use the price of this app to buy yourself a good pint in a place you enjoy !

X70%
by X####:

Not a lot of use. As other reviewers have mentioned it fails to list many decent pubs in the area whilst listing many (in my view) less worthy. I live in Oxford and there is no mention of the Turf???? Also extremely limited in what it offers without a subscription. This is not helping the local pub industry. I shall be sticking to the Casque Marque App.

X70%
by X####:

This area needs lots of work as many pubs you know are in the guide fail to show in a near you search. Nice features though but an improved user interface would be good

Misses most of my locals including Camra award winners.?! Perhaps new app will be better

Assume the much anticipated new app has been shelved?

I70%
by I####:

When I try to search for a pub by name it reports that 'there were no text matches'. This didn't happen before the update. Happens on Xperia Z3 Compact and Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014). Please fix. Further to the above: the current address label for What's Brewing (July 2016) refers to "...the new, improved GBG app." How can it be improved if you've removed functionality in Android? Yet again, please fix.

by R####:

Looks like a useful little app with informative reviews and lists of facilities available in each pub. Unfortunately the devs have been incredibly stingy with the free version, allowing you to view only the nearest pub to you, meaning it is literally a "taster" and barely worth downloading without coughing up for the full version. However, at £5 a year it may just be worth it.

Waiting the long anticipated new version HQ have been talking about since November 2015. That aside, this is a handy guide when you dont want to carry the paper book.

K70%
by K####:

Would give 0 if possible. Have paid for guide and am Camra member but it simply does not work. Links to get it working don't work. It's enough to drive you to beer.

Z70%
by Z####:

FFS the new version was promised 'early in the new year'. Still no sign or information of the release and April isn't exactly early in the new year. Amateur.

X70%

Excellent search facility. Great for finding the best pubs in an unfamiliar town. Like the books but with maps.

I use this on one device, so what precisely is this syncing with? Still can't remove individual searches, unlike the ios version.

C70%
by C####:

Everything that the book has but with maps! Fantastic.

C70%
by C####:

What's not to like? Know where the ale places are wherever you are in the UK. Smashing. And great value for money too

C70%
by C####:

The search facility does not work very well. Why it can not find a pub by name, but it can find it when I go to the town, I do not get. Also, searching by ale for the nearest pub would be a great plus.

H70%
by H####:

This works everywhere and gives you useful info, maps and directions to get where you need to be.

C70%
by C####:

A splendid tool for finding new pubs, but it seems quite unable to search for anything that isn't within ten miles. Give it a postcode it torn name to search for and it just comes up saying 'lookup failed: check your data connection' which it's just fine thank you. So I can't plan a trip, just go out and make things up on the fly.

I70%
by I####:

If I buy a good beer guide book I have it for life, this thing locks you out completely after 12 months so you have nothing. What a waste of money

C70%
by C####:

for CAMRA members. Asking another five pounds a year for this is a bit cheeky. The cask finder app does more than this as it is and it's free.

C70%
by C####:

This is the Good BEER Guide (not the Good Pub Guide - the paper edition was/is good for both) but it has very little support for beer-related interactions. It would be good to write notes against beers, and especially to be able to search on beer name, and on beer type. I would also like to know why it is that having paid for the 2015 edition I now get a limited taster for the 2016 edition but NO access to the 2015 edition that I paid for. Or I can see the 'legacy' edition (2012)!

C70%
by C####:

So useful when out and about. I don't understand why some reviewers are moaning about it???

C70%

Wouldn't leave home without it.

C70%

Top app use it all the time

C70%

Program seems like something 10 years old. Needs a re-write and modernising.

Z70%
by Z####:

Very useful. Easy to use and tactile but lacks cut and paste option. With modern phoones etc it would be much better if you could copy postcodes etc and us in another app eg maps

C70%
by C####:

Must have app. Great to find a good pint when you're away from home.

C70%
by C####:

Thanks for the fix, now working perfectly

C70%

Somerset pubs are missing on Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, fine on HTC Desire 320 mobile.

C70%
by C####:

This could be such a great app, but it really lacks features: The fact that you STILL (2016 edition) can't search on a beer to find what brewery it comes from (like the beers index in the paper GBG) is poor and could be easily added. You can't add any comments on beers. You can't add any comments on breweries. At least you can now (2015 edition) search for breweries. That said, it does list all the GBG pubs and help locate those closest - useful when travelling.

Q70%
by Q####:

Agree with other ratings re the need for the map pins to change colour for visited venues. Visited venues also need to transfer to other devices. The map would also be much improved if the user location moved in realtime like in other map based apps.

C70%
by C####:

Great app but since update on 10915 some places pubs are not showing just the breweries ie Derby.

C70%
by C####:

Maps work very well, brilliant when in a new town. Nice to get the 2016 guide updates so quickly.

A70%
by A####:

What happened to Dronfield??

C70%
by C####:

I've had this for several years but this time having bought the new year's subscription the app is denying me access. Play store confirms I've paid, I've had the email. What's going on?

C70%
by C####:

Why does CAMRA persist in allowing this tatty piece of software to carry its name? It’s appallingly slow. Any user waiting for the maps to download will inevitably miss last orders. Much quicker to type the name of the pub into Google maps and let their proper app take the strain. Then the perennial issue. Each year I re-subscribe, more in hope than in expectation that the software will have improved and also hoping upon hope that the comments, favourites and pubs visited that I’ve lovingly added will be retained. On the rare occasions that I’ve received a reply to my emails I’ve always been assured that notes will not be deleted, they always are! For a campaigning group with the membership and influence the size of CAMRA this really isn’t good enough. Younger people, who we are always being told should be targeted as future CAMRA members, are not going to be impressed by such an out-dated app. I love the idea of having an up to date copy of the GBG with me on my travels but it could and should be so much better.

I remember this app being rather flakey and underwhelming. However, as it is a bit more convenient than the book, I thought I'd give it another go. Glad I did, since it is much improved and does precisely what I want it to.
