ফারুক মাহফুজ আনাম (জন্মঃ ২ অক্টোবর ১৯৬৪) হলেন একজন বাংলাদেশী রক সঙ্গীত শিল্পী, যিনি জেমস নামেই পরিচিত। তিনি তার ভক্তদের কাছে 'গুরু', 'নগর-বাউল' নামেও পরিচিত।

জেমস বর্তমানে নগর বাউল ব্যান্ডের প্রধান গিটারিস্ট এবং ভোকালিষ্ট, যা পূর্বে ফিলিংস নামে পরিচিত ছিল। তিনি তার স্বতন্ত্র কন্ঠ এবং স্টাইলের জন্য বাংলাদেশ এবং ভারতের মানুষের কাছে ব্যপক জনপ্রিয়। তিনি বলিউডের কিছু চলচ্চিত্রে প্লেব্যাকও করেছেন।

চট্টগ্রাম থেকে শুরু হওয়া ব্যান্ড দল ফিলিংস এর মাধ্যমে তিনি প্রথমে খ্যাতি অর্জন করেন। পরবর্তীতে তিনি নগর বাউল নামে ব্যান্ড দল গঠন করেন। তিনি নগর বাউল এর প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সদস্য। বাংলা ভাষায় তিনিই প্রথম সাইকিডেলিক রক শুরু করেন। গিটার বাজানোতেও তিনি দারুণ পটু। তিনি নগরবাউল ব্যান্ডের মূল ভোকাল ও গিটারিষ্ট হলেও তিনি মূলত তার সলো ক্যারিয়ারকেই বেশি গুরত্ব দেন। অনেক গীতিকার তার জন্য সঙ্গীত রচনা করেছেন। যাদের মধ্যে কবি শামসুর রহমান, প্রিন্স মাহমুদ, শিবলি উল্লেখযোগ্য। কর্মজীবনের প্রথম দিকে তিনি জিম মরিসন, মার্ক নফলার এবং এরিক ক্লাপটনের মত সঙ্গীত শিল্পীদের দ্বারা অনুপ্রাণিত হয়েছেন। ১৯৮৭ সালে ফিলিংস ব্যান্ডের সাথে তার প্রথম অ্যালবাম “স্টেশন রোড” মুক্তি পায়। ১৯৮৮ সালে মুক্তি পায় তার প্রথম একক অ্যালবাম অনন্যা। পরবর্তীতে তিনি ফিলিংস ব্যান্ডের নাম পরিবর্তন করে নতুন নাম দেন “নগর বাউল”।

বাংলা ব্যান্ড সঙ্গীতে কাজ করার কারণে পশ্চিম বঙ্গেও খুব জনপ্রিয় ছিলেন জেমস। সেই সূত্রে ২০০৪ সালে বাঙালি সঙ্গীত পরিচালক প্রিতমের সাথে মিলিত হন তিনি। ২০০৫ সালে বলিউডের গ্যাংস্টার নামক একটি চলচ্চিত্রে তিনি প্লেব্যাক করেন। চলচ্চিত্রে তার গাওয়া “ভিগি ভিগি” গানটি ব্যপক জনপ্রিয়তা পায় এবং এক মাসেরও বেশি সময় তা বলিউড টপচার্টের শীর্ষে ছিল।।[৪] ২০০৬ সালে তিনি ও লামহে নামক চলচ্চিত্রে “চল চলে” গানে কন্ঠ্য দেন। ২০০৭ সালে তিনি লাইফ ইন এ মেট্রো চলচ্চিত্রে আবারও প্লেব্যাক করেন। চলচ্চিত্রে তার গাওয়া গান দুইটি হল রিশতে এবং আলবিদা (রিপ্রাইস)। সর্বশেষ তিনি প্লেব্যাক করেছেন ওয়ার্নিং নামক চলচ্চিত্রে। চলচ্চিত্রে তার গাওয়া বেবাসি গানটি মুক্তি পায় ২০১৩ সালের

Faruq Mahfuz Anam (known by his stage name James) is a Bangladeshi singer, guitarist, and composer. He is often referred to as "Guru".[1] James is currently the lead guitarist and vocalist of the band Nagar Baul (the Urban Medincant). He has also played back in few songs in Bollywood movies.[2] James rose to mainstream fame in 1990s as the frontman of "Feelings" now renamed "Nagar Baul" which is one of the "Big Three of Rock", who were responsible for developing and popularising rock music in Bangladesh, the other two being LRB and Ark. James is considered to be the pioneer of psychedelic rock in Bangladesh.[1]

After some members left "Feelings" in 1980, James, along with Funty, Pablo and Swapan reformed the band and started to perform in local gigs. This was the line-up at that time:

He became popular among musicians as 'The one who can play Mark Knoepffler with the right feels'. After several years of stage shows, they came to Dhaka to record their first album, 'Station Road'. All the tracks were composed by James, with five of its lyrics being written by him as well. Though the album was not a hit, some tracks like 'Ager Jonome', 'Amai Jete Dao' and 'Rupshagor' enjoyed moderate success.

In 1993, they released their second album 'Jail Theke Bolchhi' (Speaking from the Jail). This album was a major hit and Feelings became a mainstream band.

James has been one of the most popular artists, both as a solo musician and with his band in Bangladesh and in West Bengal in India since the 1990s. James met Pritam a Bengali music Composer and Singer working in Bollywood in 2004. in 2005, James did the playback for the movie "Gangster". The title of the song was "Bheegi Bheegi" and it was a blockbuster hit. The song remained at the top of the Bollywood Hit List for more than a month.[4] He later teamed up with Pritam again for the movie "Woh Lamhe" in 2006 for the song "Chal Chalein" and again for "Rishtey" and "Alvida (Reprise)" in the movie "Life in a Metro".
