বাংলাদেশের লোক সাহিত্য বাংলা সাহিত্য, কৃষ্টি, সংস্কৃতি ও ঐতিহ্যে বিশেষ ভূমিকা রেখেছে। যদিও এর সৃষ্টি ঘটেছে অশিক্ষিত জনগোষ্ঠির মাধ্যমে এবং প্রজন্ম থেকে প্রজন্মে প্রসার ঘটেছে মৌখিকভাবে, তথাপি বাংলা সাহিত্যকে এ লোক সাহিত্য ব্যাপ্তি প্রদান করেছে, করেছে সমৃদ্ধ। পৃথক পৃথক ব্যক্তি-বিশেষের সৃষ্টি পরিণত হয়েছে জনগোষ্ঠির ঐতিহ্যে যার মাধ্যমে প্রকাশ ঘটেছে ভালোবাসা, আবেগ, অনুভূতি ও চিন্তা চেতনার।

লোক সাহিত্য মূলত মৌখিক সাহিত্য। ফলে এধরণের সাহিত্য স্মৃতিসহায়ক কৌশল, ভাষার গঠনকাঠামো এবং শৈলীর উপরও নির্ভর করে। এদেশের লোক সাহিত্য সাহিত্যের বিভিন্ন শাখায় বিচরণ করছে। এগুলো হচ্ছে মহাকাব্য, কবিতা ও নাটক, লোক গল্প, প্রবাদ বাক্য, গীতি কাব্য প্রভৃতি। লোক সাহিত্যের এই সম্পদগুলো সাহিত্যের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দলিল হিসেবে অথবা অন্য কোন উপায়ে এখনো এই অঞ্চলে টিকে রয়েছে। বহুবছর ধরে এদেশে বিভিন্ন জাতিগোষ্ঠীর বসবাস। বাংলাদেশের লোক সাহিত্য এই জাতিগোষ্ঠীগুলো দ্বারা গভীরভাবে প্রভাবিত। ফলশ্রুতিতে বর্তমান বাংলাদেশের বহুমুখী বৈচিত্র্যপূর্ণ বিশাল লোক সাহিত্যের একাংশের ব্যাখ্যায় ইতিহাসের প্রয়োজন পরে।
