মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল (ইংরেজি: Muhammed Zafar Iqbal) (জন্মঃ ২৩ ডিসেম্বর ১৯৫২) হলেন একজন বাংলাদেশী লেখক, পদার্থবিদ ও শিক্ষাবিদ। তাকে বাংলাদেশে বৈজ্ঞানিক কল্পকাহিনী লেখা ও জনপ্রিয়করণের পথিকৃৎ হিসাবে গণ্য করা হয়।[১][২] এছাড়াও তিনি একজন জনপ্রিয় শিশুসাহিত্যিক এবং কলাম-লেখক। তার লেখা বেশ কয়েকটি উপন্যাস চলচ্চিত্রে রূপায়িত হয়েছে। তিনি বর্তমানে শাহজালাল বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞান ও প্রকৌশল বিভাগের একজন অধ্যাপক এবং তড়িৎ কৌশল বিভাগের প্রধান।[৩]

একটি জরিপের তথ্য অনুসারে, তিনি লেখক হিসেবে বাংলাদেশের কিশোর-কিশোরীদের মধ্যে জনপ্রিয়তার শীর্ষে; জরিপে অংশগ্রহণকারী ৪৫০ জনের মধ্যে ২৩৫ জনই (৫২.২২%) তার পক্ষে মত দিয়েছে।[৪]

জাফর ইকবালের জন্ম , ১৯৫২ সালের ২৩ ডিসেম্বর তারিখে সিলেটে। তার পিতা মুক্তিযোদ্ধা শহীদ ফয়জুর রহমান আহমদ এবং মা আয়েশা আখতার খাতুন। বাবা ফয়জুর রহমান আহমদের পুলিশের চাকরির সুবাদে তার ছোটবেলা কেটেছে বাংলাদেশের বিভিন্ন জায়গায়। মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবালের নাম আগে ছিল বাবুল। পিতা লেখালেখির চর্চা করতেন এবং পরিবারের এই সাহিত্যমনস্ক আবহাওয়ায় জাফর ইকবাল খুব অল্প বয়স থেকেই লিখতে শুরু করেন। এটিকেই তিনি তার সহজ ভাষায় লিখতে পারার গুণের কারণ বলে মনে করেন। তিনি তার প্রথম বিজ্ঞান কল্পকাহিনী লেখেন সাত বছর বয়সে। ১৯৭১ সালের ৫ মে পাকিস্তানী আর্মি এক নদীর ধারে তার দেশপ্রেমিক পিতাকে গুলি করে হত্যা করে। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়-পড়ুয়া জাফর ইকবালকে পিতার কবর খুঁড়ে তার মাকে স্বামীর মৃত্যুর ব্যাপারটি বিশ্বাস করাতে হয়েছিল[তথ্যসূত্র প্রয়োজন]। আমেরিকাতে পড়ার সময় তিনি তার ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সহপাঠী ইয়াসমিন হকের সাথে বিবাহবন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হন। ড. ইয়াসমিন হক শাহজালাল বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পদার্থবিজ্ঞান বিভাগে শিক্ষকতা করছেন। ১৯৯৪ সালে তিনি আমেরিকা ছেড়ে দেশে ফিরে আসেন।[৫] তাঁর দুই সন্তান - বড় ছেলে নাবিল ইকবাল যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের কর্ণেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে পদার্থবিজ্ঞান ও গণিতে স্নাতক সম্পন্ন করে বর্তমানে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ম্যাসাচুসেটস ইনস্টিটিউট অব টেকনলজিতে পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে পিএইচডি করছেন এবং কন্যা ইয়েশিম ইকবাল কর্ণেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে স্নাতক সম্পন্ন করে হার্ভার্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে মনোবিজ্ঞানে পিএইচডি করছেন। ইয়েশিম ইকবাল তার কিশোর উপন্যাস আমার বন্ধু রাশেদ ইংরেজিতে রূপান্তর করেছেন Rashed, my friend নামে ।

বাংলাদেশের অত্যন্ত জনপ্রিয় ঔপন্যাসিক হুমায়ূন আহমেদ তার বড় ভাই এবং রম্য ম্যাগাজিন উন্মাদের সম্পাদক ও কার্টুনিস্ট, সাহিত্যিক আহসান হাবীব তার ছোট ভাই।

ড. জাফর ইকবাল ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে স্নাতক ও স্নাতকোত্তর ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন যথাক্রমে ১৯৭৫ ও ১৯৭৬ সালে। ১৯৭৫ সালে অনার্স-এ দুই নম্বরের ব্যবধানে প্রথম শ্রেণীতে ২য় স্থান অধিকার করেন[তথ্যসূত্র প্রয়োজন]। তিনি ১৯৮২ তে ওয়াশিংটন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে পিএইচ.ডি সম্পন্ন করে ১৯৮২ থেকে ১৯৮৮ পর্যন্ত ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া ইনিস্টিটিউট অফ টেকনোলজিতে সাফল্যের সাথে ডক্টরেটোত্তর গবেষণা সম্পন্ন করেন। ১৯৮৮ তে তিনি বিখ্যাত বেল কমিউনিকেশনস রিসার্চ (বেলকোর) এ গবেষক হিসাবে যোগদান করেন এবং ১৯৯৪ পর্যন্ত সেখানেই কাজ করেন। ওই বছরেই তিনি দেশে ফিরে আসেন এবং সিলেটের শাহজালাল বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞান ও প্রকৌশল বিভাগের বিভাগীয় প্রধান হিসেবে যোগদান করেন।
