The retention lists for the season were announced in December 2016. The player auction for the season will be held on 20 February 2017 in Bangalore with 351 players available, shortlisted from the 799 players who had registered for the auction.

The 2017 season may see a new venue added for two matches. During the inauguration of the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in December 2016, the IPL chairman of IPL Rajiv Shukla suggested that two matches would be allocated subject to the completion of the stadium.
