About Learn Chinese Bigrams -WCC

Ready to understand written Chinese even faster? Here's how it works: As anyone who has studied Chinese knows, any given single Chinese character nearly always has multiple meanings, often with completely unrelated definitions. Take the word "使" (shi3). It's definition includes meaning such as to make, to cause, to enable, to use, to employ, messenger, etc.

Instead of "使" (shi3), our app will give you "天使" (tian1shi3) which has one meaning only: angel. Learning these bigrams first can be a great tool in understanding the general meaning of the individual character.

Learn Chinese Bigrams by WCC helps you learn in a systematic sequence starting from the statistically most commonly occurring bigrams. This valuable learning tool will be useful to your studies whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner.

Test out 50 of our 20,587 most commonly written Chinese 2-character combinations before you unlock the full version. Inside the full version are all the bigrams you would ever need to know in Chinese! (Unless you're planning to study molecular biology at Peking University).

Features:

Completely offline. Practice and learn anywhere you go!

50 of our 20,587 high-ranking bigrams with Simplified and Traditional variations, standard Mandarin pinyin with audio, definitions, radical count, stroke count, four corner and bonus Cantonese pronunciation guides in Yale and Jyutping, Cangjie.

Spoken Mandarin voice pronunciation for each bigram and any individual characters by a native-speaking Putonghua professor who has a "putonghua shuiping ceshi" top-level certification.

Our pinyin voice recordings are the most complete in the industry including "fifth tone" sounds and "combined syllable" sounds such as those combining "儿" as a suffix.

Compare function allows you to view two characters or bigrams of your choice side by side to distinguish subtle differences!

Choice of displaying pinyin tones by Tone Marks, Tone Numbers, or colors.

"Red Characters" quickly identify where the Simplified and Traditional forms are different. Additionally, you can toggle between Simplified and Traditional while viewing the flashcard.

Powerful search system with pinyin wildcard functionality. Search by pinyin, English, Chinese characters, radicals, stroke count, and even rank number.

Audio accounts for tone changes (Tone Sandhi) when specific combination of characters are used together. (ie. 不 and 一 combinations)

Here at WrittenChinese.com, we were among the first Chinese flashcard learning apps and our methods have withstood the test of time. We focus on Mandarin learning, including audio by a native speaker and standard Mandarin Pinyin, however, if you’re interested you can turn on the Cantonese pronunciation guides as well.

As Chinese learners ourselves, we carefully engineered Learn Chinese Bigrams by WCC to give you the most efficient method to learn Chinese words and build useful vocabulary.

It's great that this app focuses on words (character combinations). Too many Chinese apps teach you only individual characters. some suggestions: 1. Sample sentences would be helpful. 2. "bigram" is not a very user-friendly word. I think the app should teach both individual characters, and "words" of 2 or 3 characters. For example, 外國人 (foreigner) is just as useful to learn as many 2-character words. 3. Would be useful to be able to search for a character (by pinyin or meaning) and have the app show all the words containing that character.
