About 3D Fox - 3D Printer / CNC Controller

Print G-code files directly from your Android device via Wifi, Bluetooth or USB OTG/Host port.

3D Fox is simple to use, has a clear and meaningful log screen and works great on small/inexpensive devices as well.

Developed with a Reprap Prusa i3 with Mega2560 + Ramps + Marlin/Repetier + Slic3r, Wifi module ESP8266 and BT module JY-MCU, it should work with many other HW/SW combinations.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
• Web interface monitor printer and to upload/print files from your PC/Tablet browser over the network.
• Video streaming of the device built-in webcam.
• Take back control of SD card printing jobs after losing connection with the printer. You can use this feature to manager several printers with the same device: start a print job on printer A, then do something else on printer B, finally go back to printer A and take back control of the pending printing job.

NOTES:
• You must put your G-code files in 3DFox directory of your Andorid device. Use a file manager (we recommend ES File Explorer) to move files from their original location to 3DFox
• 3D Fox does not work with MakerBot or other printers using a proprietary communication protocol.

USB CONNECTION
• Android device must have a USB OTG/Host port: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go
• Supported printer USB-to-serial chips:
- CDC ACM (eg Arduino Mega)
- FTDI (eg Melzi, Sanguinololu)
- CH34x
- CP210X, PL2303

WIFI MODULE ESP-01 (ESP8266 chip) succesfully tested:
• Firmware: transparent bridge 'esp-link' by JeeLabs: http://github.com/jeelabs/esp-link
• Baud rate: 250000.
• Upload speed: 1 MB transferred in 100 s (with Mega2560+Marlin), comparable to USB connection speed.
• Antenna: performances boosted with this improvement: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1665680

BLUETOOTH MODULE
• Bluetooth module JY-MCU connection and configuration: http://reprap.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Jy-mcu#A_simple_way_to_change_BT_module_settings_-_apparently_using_ftdi_chip.2C_but_not_recommended

FREE VERSION LIMITATIONS:
• Max file size for printing and uploading: 2 MB
• Custom commands: 12 instead of 36
• Decimal digits for XYZ positions and moves: 1 instead of 2
• There are only a few limitations. If you are happy with the app, please consider buying the Pro version to reward our development work. Pro version is available here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fox3d.controller.pro

Love the app so much, but how do I make a custom start/end gcode for my printer, so it starts and ends as it would using cura???

Love this so far. If you could add status stuff to the control panel in landscape mode, it would be a great addition.

I was really excited to try the app and make use of an old tablet had laying around to control my 3D printer. No such luck as my device is not supported. As far as I know I'm using a typical usb to serial interface.

UPDATE ** The addition of the fan is cool, more useful than I first thought. ** This app is easy to use, with everything I need to run my printer. The app is very responsive and so is the developer, the connection to the printer seems to be really solid. Highly recommend this app. The developer was easy to communicate with and once he understood the reason for my request he made the changes I wanted in what seemed like no time.

It says my device is not supported. I have the tevo tarantula. ***UPDATE: ***App now supports the tevo tarantula! Thanks to the developer for the reply and update. *** I've had a little chance to play around with this app, and so far, so good. I have managed to use an older samsung active s4 with a broken screen to act as a server for my TEVO TARANTULA printer and good news, it works! I will continue to update this review when i am able to use it further. (I am out of filament and waiting to re-order)

This app works fairly well but has a few issues during my testing. When using the z control, it crashes the nozzle into the build platform instantly. The bed temp shows 471.3 most of the time. Running a Folgertech Kossel (delta type) with a MKS SBase (smoothieware) controller. Printer operates correctly from LCD, S3D, Cura, Pronterface, and Repetier Host. EDIT: Preheating from the app also causes the LCD on the printer to report the same wrong bed temp. Very strange.

It works with Hephestos 2 3D printer. It seems developers are busy adding features to this nice program (as Hephestos 2 did not work before). Printing files over a wifi network is a feature I find pretty cool.

I hooked this to my printer and then tried to run it. It wouldn't Even see my printer or that any of the files I have on the SD card could be seen as it doesn't even acknowledge a SD card..not good at all on all tablets might need to be said of this app. * It says at top of screen "connect(usb") and press that, then it says in a box as Info,, Device 0x0403.0x6001 is not supported yet. We are working on it. We,, meaning you,,lol. And that my machine is a Geeetech i3, which is basically running marlin, the tablet I use is a 7" A33 Android 4.4,, its a cheap one from China,, but still if it loads it it should at least see the printer, via the OTG.

Tested with Prusa i3 and Ramps, works well with both Bluetooth and USB connection. Simple to use and quite robust to abnormal use (sudden disconnection, SD card removal, etc.). I really love the "recover" button: if you lose connection or you want to use your phone for other purposes, you can later re-gain control of a running SD print job. No need for a PC anymore! You are forced to put your Gcode files in a given directory, but this makes your life much easier later when you have to use them. I like the idea to use ES File Explorer (or similar software) to move/manage files around, while 3Dfox developers concentrate on more important printing functionalities.

K70%
by K####:

Great app, the only one of this kind that runs well on small phones. It has most of the basic functionalities you need to manage your printer. The log screen is easy to read and understand. It is clearly an app for 'standard' users (it has no debug or 'geek' functionalities), but thanks to that it is easy and intuitive to use. I give it a 5 for the good start and the promising development program
