SCHAUSAMMLUNG
Die Reise durch die Kulturgeschichte des Landes Tirol beginnt mit Erklärungen zur Entstehung des heutigen landschaftlichen Erscheinungsbildes Tirols. Ausgestellt sind u. a. Gesteine wie der Hagauer Marmor, der als Baustein in der Architektur Tirols eine wichtige Rolle spielt, bzw. solche, die Zeugnis sind für die Prozesse, die nach dem Rückzug der letzten Gletscher die Täler betroffen haben.

Die Schausammlung verdeutlicht, dass Tirol zur Übergangszeit vom Mittelalter zur Neuzeit ein Bergbaugebiet ersten Ranges war. Kupfer, Silber, Zink, Blei, Eisen und Salz wurden abgebaut. Das tirolische Münzwesen erreichte in der Regierungszeit von Erzherzog Sigmund dem Münzreichen und Maximilian I. seinen Höhepunkt. Zu sehen sind Besonderheiten wie das Schwazer Bergbuch von 1556, der Knappschaftsbecher aus Rattenberg um 1600, Prägewerkzeuge sowie zahlreiche Schaugepräge Maximilians I. wie Porträtmünzen, Hochzeitsguldiner oder der Doppelreitertaler anlässlich der Annahme des Kaisertitels.

Den sozialen und religiösen Missständen des 16. Jahrhunderts und dem Einsetzen der Gegenreformation, die zum heute noch manchmal benützten Schlagwort „Heiliges Land“ Tirol führte, widmet sich ein weiterer Raum. Erzählt wird von vermeintlichen „Hexen“ und „Zauberern“, von Rebellen und Außenseitern wie z. B. Michael Gaismair, der sich im 16. Jahrhundert gegen die Unterdrückung der Bauern durch den Landadel und den Klerus auflehnte, oder den „Hutterern“, eine religiöse Gruppe, die sich nach Ende der Bauernaufstände formierte und jegliche Form von Obrigkeit ablehnte.

Eine weitere Station in der Schausammlung sind die Befreiungskriege Tirols. Das besondere Engagement der Tiroler in den Freiheitskämpfen hing stark mit ihren Sonderrechten (keine Leibeigenschaft, Landlibell von 1511) und der hohen Wertschätzung des eigenen Vaterlandes zusammen. Zu den herausragenden Persönlichkeiten dieser Zeit zählen Andreas Hofer, Major Josef Speckbacher und der Kapuzinerpate Joachim Haspinger.

ERFINDER UND ENTDECKER
Wissenschaftliche Leistungen und die „Eroberung“ des Gebirgslandes z. B. durch Landschaftsmaler und den Tourismus beleuchtet ein weiterer Raum. Ein herausragendes Objekt ist die erste Europa-Straßenwandkarte von Martin Waldseemüller aus dem Jahr 1520. Mit Peter Anich (1723-1766) aus Oberperfuss wird der Höhepunkt einheimischer kartographischer Leistungen erreicht. Ausgestellt sind u. a. seine großen Globen. Im 19. Jahrhundert ist die Erfindung eines Mappierungsgeräts für Distanzen-, Kurven- und Höhenmessungen von Jakob Eisendle beispielhaft.

Die günstige Entwicklung des Landes, dessen Wirtschaft durch den aufblühenden Tourismus eine kräftige Stütze erhielt, erfährt mit dem Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges eine scharfe Zäsur.
