Flora Capture

As part of the research project "Flora Incognita" a method for semi-automatic plant determination via mobile devices will be developed. The process will lead a user through an interactive series of identification steps. Part of these steps will utilize image recognition techniques to identify plant traits. For training of the applied image recognition technology, the research team has to rely on an extensive image database of standardized images of plants and their organs (flower and leaves). To help with building this database we would like to ask interested enthusiasts to support us. Please photograph during your walks and hikes known and unknown plant species for us! We need photos of all flowering plants in Germany. It does not matter whether the species are conspicuous, inconspicuous, colorful, big or small. They should just blossom and be naturalized as a wild plant in Germany. Cultural and garden plants can not be considered right know, unfortunately. With each uploaded image you contribute to the development of a semi-automatic plant determination app!
The Flora Incognitia app "Plant Image Capture" is an easy to use app that lets you take quickly images of plants and their organs and allows to upload images to our project server. Flora Incocnitia - Plant Image Capture is not a identifiaction application but serves to build up a large image database for our research project. These images are used for the development and training of image recognition technologies and are an important part of developing a semiautomatic plant identifiaction app. We look forward to a strong support from the citizen. Flora Incognita is a research project founded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safty (BMUB), the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the Nature Conservation Foundation of Thuringia, with the purpose to support research projects to implement the German National Strategy on Biological Diversity. It is a joint project between the Technical University in Ilmenau and the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena.
