Bakgrunden är att de äldre kanalerna och informationstjänsterna alltmer uppfattas som otillförlitliga och dess innehåll och urval i alltför stor utsträckning påverkas av en beröringsångest kring frågor som invandring och mångkultur. Begreppet alternativ media har ingen exakt och tydlig definition men anses avse en fri och obunden nyhetsförmedling, i regel utan politisk korrekthet.
