El término evangelio proviene de un vocablo griego que significa “buena nueva” y hace referencia al relato de la existencia, los milagros y los postulados de Cristo. Dicha historia se encuentra narrada en cuatro libros conocidos por el nombre de quienes los narraron (los evangelistas) y que forman el denominado Nuevo Testamento.

En los Evangelios se narra la vida de Jesús y aquellas enseñanzas que dejó a sus discípulos y en las cuales se basan la mayoría de las creencias de la fe católica.

En dichas creencias se asume que estos cuatro libros fueron escritos por los evangelistas Mateo, Juan, Lucas y Marcos y se conocen como los evangelios canónicos.

Existen otros escritos, conocidos como evangelios apócrifos, no reconocidos como canónicos por las iglesias cristianas actuales, de manera que estos evangelios apócrifos no son aceptados como fidedignos, ni como textos inspirados por la divinidad. Pero sí fueron considerados «escritura» por algunas de las facciones en que se dividió el cristianismo durante los primeros siglos de su historia, especialmente por la corriente gnóstica, que fue la que aportó la mayor parte de estos textos, y por comunidades cristianas que conservaron una ligazón más estrecha con la tradición judía de la que surgió el cristianismo.

The term gospel comes from a Greek word meaning "good news" and refers to the story of the life, miracles and the principles of Christ. This history is told in four known by the name of those books narrated (the evangelists) and forming the so-called New Testament.

But they were considered "writing" by some of the factions that Christianity was divided during the first centuries of its history, especially the gnostic stream, which was the one that brought most of these texts, and Christian communities who preserved a closer bond with the Jewish tradition from which Christianity arose.
