About English Your Mind: Prepositions (basics)
‘In the street’ or ‘on the street’? ‘At night’ or ‘in the night’? ‘At London’ or ‘in London’? ‘In the cold morning’ or ‘at the cold morning’? Or maybe ‘on the cold morning’?
Though prepositions are small words they cause significant difficulties for English learners. That is because English has more than 100 prepositions that are used in a different way, when compared to other languages - often without any logic.
When we use at, on, in as prepositions of time we use at to refer to exact time (like clock time), on – to refer to larger time periods (a single day), and in - to refer to large periods of time such as weeks, months, years, etc.
When used as prepositions of place the basic rule is that we use at for exact locations (like a point in space), on – for larger areas and in – for large areas like cities, districts, etc.
There are many exceptions, however. And these basics rules become complicated with many additions that seem to be without any logic.
Of course, this requires paying particular attention if you want to use these small words correctly.
One of the really efficient ways to master the theory is to use visual mnemonics. It provides you with an opportunity to memorize grammar rules rather well and use it in practice. In addition, you will memorize many details that would require much more time if you learned it in a traditional way.
The new, 7th version of English Your Mind, deals with the basics of prepositions and prepositions of time and place (at, on, in).
It contains visuals that will help you to memorize grammar rules on how to use at, on, in as prepositions of time and place in different contexts. Besides, you will learn many examples that will give you a strong basis for using the theory in practice.
Mastering prepositions usage requires a lot of practice. And this program called English Your Mind increases your ability to memorize big chunks of information in a natural way, as your mind does it in your everyday life – by using visual information. If you could stop for a moment and think about it you would realize that most of us memorize information by using visual images of different kind. Just try to remember any text you have read recently.
