Oxalá

Orixá masculino, de origem Ioruba (nagô) bastante cultuado no Brasil, onde costuma ser considerado a divindade mais importante do panteão africano. Na África é cultuado com o nome de Obatalá. Quando porém os negros vieram para cá, como mão-de-obra escrava na agricultura, trouxeram consigo, além do nome do Orixá, uma outra forma de a ele se referirem, Orixalá, que significa, orixá dos orixás. Numa versão contraída, o nome que se acabou popularizando, é OXALÁ.

Esta relação de importância advém de a organização de divindades africanas ser uma maneira simbólica de se codificar as regras do comportamento. Nos preceitos, estão todas as matrizes básicas da organização familiar e tribal, das atitudes possíveis, dos diversos caminhos para uma mesma questão. Para um mesmo problema, orixás diferentes propõem respostas diferentes - e raramente há um acordo social no sentido de estabelecer uma das saídas como correta e a outra não. A jurisprudência africana nesse sentido prefere conviver com os opostos, estabelecendo, no máximo, que, perante um impasse, Ogum faz isso, Iansã faz aquilo, por exemplo.

Assim, Oxalá não tem mais poderes que os outros nem é hierarquicamente superior, mas merece o respeito de todos por representar o patriarca, o chefe da família. Cada membro da família tem suas funções e o direito de se inter-relacionar de igual para igual com todos os outros membros, o que as lendas dos Orixás confirmam através da independência que cada um mantém em relação aos outros. Oxalá, porém, é o que traz consigo a memória de outros tempos, as soluções já encontradas no passado para casos semelhantes, merecendo, portanto, o respeito de todos numa sociedade que cultuava ativamente seus ancestrais. Ele representa o conhecimento empírico, neste caso colocado acima do conhecimento especializado que cada Orixá pode apresentar: Ossâim, a liturgia; Oxóssi, a caça; Ogum, a metalurgia; Oxum, a maternidade; Iemanjá, a educação; Omolu, a medicina - e assim por diante.

It is empirical knowledge, in this case placed above the expertise that each Orisha can have: Ossaim the liturgy; Oxóssi, hunting; Ogun, metallurgy; Oshun, motherhood; Yemanja, education; Omolu, medicine - and so forth.
