Duolingo: Learn Languages Free for Android
Haven't taken any language since high school but I expected this to be more basic for the casual user. Instead it went right into asking me the word for a person. How am I supposed to know it if they haven't shown it . Additionally there is much too little audio. Too many words I am left wondering how to pronounce.
Update: I mostly enjoy this app. The language learning (I am learning Spanish) is pretty good, I think. BUT!! I do not like all of the strengthening exercises. Some would be fine, but today I logged on and I had SIX sections to strengthen. I never got to the new material, because I ran out of time. This happened even when I was on a 25 day streak! There appear to be checkpoints throughout the sections, but I don't know what use they are to me. One would assume that if you pass a checkpoint, you won't have to go back as long as you keep practicing/learning. I want to learn new material, but I am stuck proving that I know the old material.
Absolutely amazing! This app gives a LOT like seriously A LOT of lesson and it comes in FREE! It also gives out compliments and encouragements to us the learners, in between so we feel stay motivated and appreciated. Moreover, it gives us daily reminder so we cant be lazy! I dont usually leave comment but this app is seriously awesome. Merci beaucoup! X
This is a fun & fast way to learn another language. There's definitely some guesswork at times when they're introducing a new concept, but since it's based on natural learning methods that's to be expected & is quickly overcome. I wish you would add Japanese; I'm getting rusty! Edit (5/19/17): PLEASE ADD JAPANESE!!! My French is coming along very nicely, but I NEED to brush up my Japanese.
I've been using this app for a long time now and I love it! The exercises are very good and there is an abundance of follow-up information in the comments from some very helpful and active community members. The app also does its best to keep you motivated. My only complaint is that the app tends to encounter an error while processing payments for streak repairs, and it takes money without actually repairing the streak. This happened two times already, so 4 stars because Duo owes me 5€ -_-
Love this app! I'd recommend it to anyone trying to brush up on their Spanish or start from scratch. I took classes in HS but not much more and i feel like this app is prefect for getting me going with it again. They've rl thought of everything. I love the strengthening exercises, the reminders and the challenges they all keep me on my toes. I'm really enjoying this app.
This app is great! I have used it for other languages and it has been amaaaaaazing. Love Duolingo. But I will say that for languages like Russian where you have to learn a new alphabet, their alphabet section just isn't sufficient! I would recommend learning the alphabet elsewhere (I used a YouTube video called "learn to read and write Russian in two hours" that was excellent). Then Duolingo is wonderful for vocabulary and grammar and keeping you motivated. But learn alphabets elsewhere- you just won't get what you need from Duolingo.
Great App! I completed the App and I loved it! I'm constantly telling people about Duolingo even those who want to learn English! The only thing I wish the App did was conjugate more of the verbs. Some verbs' spelling changes to a completely different word. It would be nice to see verbs that loses a letter and gains two different letters be conjugated.
This is a great long term tool to learn to Spanish. When I do the lessons sometimes I use other software to do direct translations and to go into more specific categories but that is not what this app is for. For a beginner, it is not possible to learn a whole language in a month and this is set up for the long hual. This has lessons that will give you a variety every session that will keep you from getting bored. Whether you want to practice for 5 minutes a day or 30 minutes, if you make a specific time every day to learn, it's easy to stay on track. The system is so low pressure, I try do it before 5 am every morning. I look forward to it getting rid of my morning fog.
Good for practice, using words in sentences. It is not a complete package, and lacks the substance behind the theory that a good text book would have, and therefore leaves you unsure about tenses, and the theory of how and why masculine, feminine etc, and tenses are set out. I also find the listening difficult because the audio is clearly computer generated, and thus not always great. On the spoken aspects, it doesn't always hear or recognise what you are saying, even if it is clear. That said, a very useful tool to access anywhere, and a good place to start, get the bug to learn, and then keep as an aid.
I had learned a little bit of French in high school. DuoLingo had rekindled the enthusiasm in me to resume my French learning. I really got hooked on to the app , it is beautifully designed. I am eager to try out every morning to maintain my weekly streak. The sound of correct answers is like an addiction to keep going , awesome !!! I have tried the android, iPad and desktop versions. Surprisingly, each platform has different features in the app, which was a bit weird. But it is an enjoyable learning experience. I really miss the chat bots in android app, as available in the iPad app. Please try to consolidate your apps across devices.
This app is amazing! I'm learning to speak 3 languages at once. It features daily reminders and achievement badges. It is smooth and intuitive. I love that you can post your fluency to LinkedIn. The only problem is that it lacks the tips and language guides that are available through the browser-based version.
Brilliant, a bit confusing for the first two minutes until you realise how the learning method works. You're NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW THE ANSWER to your first questions. You see the correct answer in green, take note of it and carry on. The repetition and dumbbells practice sessions mean you retain. I've studied Welsh in colleges but this is way easier. Excellent
Great way of using my spare time, its simple and easy to use. Only bug I have is with speaking lessons. As soon as I press the Mic button I get a wrong answer even when I haven't said a sinlge letter. Don't know if it has to do with my phone or the app settings :(
I've loved this app since I first got it. The only reason I took a hiatus was because I had lost my password to both Duolingo and my email. I really love the updates! If anything I wish there were more languages, but that's why Duolingo needs monetary support.
I understand that it takes money to keep an app going so the ads never bothered me. But now you're charging a premium for offline practice and I find that disappointing. However, since I found some great and free Spanish apps that work offline I'm not as angry anymore.
To many mistakes on the early typing sentences. I've entered the exact text what the translation should be o my to be told it was wrong and showing the correction as what I entered. The early material for what's typed in need serious review. It's annoying and discouraging. I can only imagine what begginers are feeling about learning spanish. Considering on uninstalling. Please fix.
It's one of the best things that has happened to me in a long time. It has improved my mind and my self esteem and my anxiety levels. It calms me while being productive. I can't say enough good things about it. All my friends and family are connecting thru it too it's connecting neighbors who speak other languages. Its life changing
I haven't gotten far with this app yet, but it reminds me to keep practicing and it is teaching me a new language accurately. I check with people who speak the language to make sure it is correct and so far it has been. The only thing holding me back now is myself, I need to practice practice practice.
I am unable to login to practice. I used to be able to access the app with no issues. Now, I am only able to open it to the goal setting screen of how many minutes a day I want to spend working and it continues to go right back to that screen every time I hit continue. Can't learn if I can't get in.
it would be five stars, honestly, but i have a huge problem with the fact that you can't remove languages on the mobile version. incredibly frustrating. even if i try to go on the 'full site' version on my phone's browser, it just reverts back to the mobile version when i click on settings. adding a feature that would allow me to remove a language would be very helpful.
I'm an older woman who is keeping my brain agile and Duo lingo is a good way to achieve my goal. I have no intention of becoming an accomplished student or conversational but I do plan to learn enough to read some books without having to spend more time checking a dictionary every few words.
With frequently repeated words it's a good strategy to teach beginners. but taking away all streak days just because i missed one day is not fare, maybe if someone missed one day take away one day streak too. Thank you! it was my suggestion other wise you are
This app is truly brilliant, and fun! - they hit the nail on the head in making language accessible and building your confidence to actually speak the language. One little feedback piece though, it has a little bug in that sometimes doesn't pick up you voice accurately or says you get one wrong when it's right. Bit that is like 1 percent of the time or something. So a little quarkey.
It's a very good app to learn. Esp for my husband who needs to learn German. For me it's fun though huuuuh.... After update it doesn't remember the daily strike, today it had set all on zero. When you can handle that, 5 stars for sure!
This is a great app. Easy to navigate and covers a wide variety of topics. However I wish explanations for conjugating verbs, using male and female pronouns... for eg were explained. You have to figure it out all on your own. This can a bit challenging for one who has never studied French before.
I like that it teaches you to read and write, as well as listen and speak. I also like that the app picks up which areas you are struggling with, and creates review sessions for them. I wish the groups function allowed a bit more freedom with communication - I would love a forum to practise the language with other learners! Otherwise, this app is awesome.
It's a good app for learning languages, learning Portuguese at the moment. But the app itself does not work very well. Won't connect to internet, problems signing in. App going round in circles when selecting your goals, just keeps going back to same screen. Looking forward to an update.
Duolingo is one of my favorite Language. I like it so much that i even paid for the new subscribtion. Unfortunately i am only able to download French for offline use. I tried to download Vietnamese and i always encounter an Errormessage. (Already de- and reinstalled twice. doesnt work either.) Fix and 5 Stars from me.
A free app that allows you to easily learn a language with a beautiful interface and no ads? Where do I sign up? (Also this app says it has "ads", but these are just a picture with an exit button you can actually click, and you don't have to wait until the button appears)
Learnt so much in a short time. Amazing. Edit: Quality has dropped since they started asking for money to remove the ads. It doesn't turn gold after you finish practice it doesn't matter which language you do the practice on. Languages like Swahili have many mistakes, they just rushed to release it.
The app is great and very helpful but there are some features that could be added to make it better and more like the website (which is amazing). (I'm only learning french, so I don't know if these criticisms apply to other courses.) There needs to be fewer of the click the pairs exercise. that exercise is good when you start out, but once you get further down the lessons (like level 4/5), it just gets in the way and you don't feel like you're learning anything from it. once you've completed the lesson 2 or 3 times, there needs to be more actually writing out the translation yourself. those are the exercises that help you learn the best. if there could be a way to see verb conjugations that would be great (especially when you first learn a new verb). and the flashcards on the website are great and would work really well in the mobile app, I'm not sure why they're not there... even though there's a lot of things to improve, I really like this app, it's helped me so much.
I updated it and regret it immediatly! This was one of the best apps out there. Now its got ads, a really bad interface and is slow and sluggish. How has it gotten worse. Ia it possible to somehow downgrade the update
Very easy to learn how to do and learn a new language. I try make a test in my native language and this was so funny 'cause i'm only 2% fluent in my native language!!! I recommend it for all who is a self hard worker student. Learn a new language can open a new horizont in your life a good way to think out side the box. So let's do this keep going and never quit ;)
I am learning a lot! The only thing I'm sgurggling with is when it wants me to spell in the ither language. Looking at the word a few times doesn't help me know how to spell it and it doesn't go into depth about the alphabet. I recommend using two appa if u are going to use this one
I like the app, I've been using it for a little bit, i wish it had some conventional "classroom" style sessions where it directly taught you things. Just the important stuff like conjugation that's hard to pick up otherwise. Besides that, I love it!
I love the app so far. It's free, has some minor ads that you can easily ignore, and the exercises are really good for practice. Currently refreshing my skills in French, but please, PLEASE add JAPANESE!! I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to learn that. So far Duolingo is the best app of its kind, so I hope it grows in the future! :)
Very good system for tracking and rewarding frequent usage. Builds a decent vocab, albeit through several absurd sentences. Might be a good idea to start introducing more formal grammar for those who use it as the main or only medium to learn a foreign language. Otherwise it also works well as a sidekick to more formal learning using a textbook, grammar book, dictionary and recordings. Good work guys!
Cam we have Japanese? iOS has it.. Tired of this inequality of platforms it's kind of bs. It's 2017 release for both platforms at the same time. It's not 2013 where iOS is always first. There's over 1 billion active android devices get with the program..

This used to be such a great app. But ever since the developers went to the pay me first approach the quality has gone downhill. Recently I went from a 54 percent proficiency rate to 49 percent rating in one day without even doing anything. My guess is that up to 49 percent is the free part of the lessons and anything more you must pay to play. Duolingo education is really not free.
