CleanSpace – Air Pollution App for Android
Very simplistic app. It's a shame that you still have to log into the website to validate journeys; if I cycle a 10 mile journey it splits the journey into 40 - 50 segments of bike/bus/foot/car, each of which needs individually correcting. It literally reports that I drive for 3 seconds, take a bus for 10 seconds, cycle for a mile, then walk a bit. Support told me it would learn to be smarter, but I don't have the time to do all that admin every day given that there no way of telling it "this whole journey was by bike". It's also frustrating that the off/on tracking button is hidden in Settings. And no CleanSpace, I don't want to turn off location on my device to stop you tracking me.
Very strangely when i cycle through the most congested parts of London the GPS falls out and doesn't record the pollution, conspiracy?
Great. Took a while to sync for the first time but now working well.
Great. #bigly #covfefe
Really useful app especially as I also purchased the tag which gives my personal air quality assessment. I had a few surprises! Only 4* though because the range of phones it works with is restricted so do check. The cleanspace team are really friendly and knowledgeable should you need help.
Like many apps this isn't perfect, but better than 4* I reckon. A really great thing to be a part of and a good group of people behind it/great customer service. Been using the app and tag for a number of months/years overall and still love using it and racking up my CleanMiles, and hopefully encouraging others to do the same.
I like the concept but the app is very buggy, causes frequent crashes, errors and battery drain. I will be more than happy to provide a higher rating if these issues can be addressed.
used to work okay, 4 stars. maps view is based on weak data outside london. inside m25 much better (but still estimated data, not actual cleanspace measured data, and only for one pollutant). app now crashes on opening. come on guys - this isnt good enough...
Sounds like a good idea but is this for London only ?
I use the app with the tag and really enjoying it. Very simple to use and you get the data with very little delay which I found very useful when I want to check the air quality in the place where I am. This is the main functionality I want it for. I don't give it the fifth star because in order to track the readings for future contribution to the air quality map, your phone needs gyroscope and accelerometer, I am missing one of them which is a shame. Finally, the support person i have been in contact (with many questions to help me understand how things work) is very friendly and responsive which I appreciate very much.
Pairs every time ok and seems to measure air quality OK after I press boost readings. But the battery drain when tracking is switched on is really bad. Consequently I switch this off often and then forget to switch it back on. If you fixed the battery drain issue, this would be up to 5 stars.
I am very happy with my CleanSpace-Air polution App since day one. I can't stop myself, telling my friends and family all about it. Do you think that in the near future, we could see a new generation Tag with a hook or something like that to carry the Tag more easily ?
Well, app has improved since last time I tried it, but to be honest it's still very buggy. With traction on it measures maybe only 20% of the distance I walk or cycle. Honestly why don't you fill in the gaps if it's clearly visible that there are data collected before and after? Online journey validation tool is rubbish as well. Honestly, every node one by one I have to confirm? Why tag data can be checked only in the app and not online? If you can't improve your tracking algorithm, the at least incorporate support for android fit, Garmin connect and similar tools.
Garmin says I walked 10 miles, the app says 0. Readings random, it works only when I press "boost reading". Excellent idea but needs a big improvement, at the moment it's quite useless, at least for me. They sent me the tag for free, so it's really frustrating for me that I only want to help monitoring London air, but I'm unable to.
Been using the app and the tag on my daily commutes for over 6 months now. It is easy to set up and most paring and update issues can be solved by resetting the tag. The positives are great customer support, app that's easy to use and shows live info of the air around, used a mask while cycling and did notice the difference. Also great to see the miles covered and the rank compared to other users. I would prefer some improvements though, tracking button in the app to be moved back to homepage, instead of hiding it in settings. Tracking accuracy needs to be improved. With a lot of stop and go in traffic there are always gaps and inaccuracies in tracking distances. I guess this depends on phones location accuracy as well and the frequency of readings. Also make 'Validate Journeys' easier and faster with an option to auto fill certain transport modes. Incorporate a kind of hook design which will make it easy to attach and carry the tag. Overall, I'm satisfied. It is a useful and fun little piece of kit to have. Oh and expand its use outside London. Would love to see and compare the air quality on my rides in the countryside and some background info on how the data collected is used.
Love the tag but the app will not log my miles travelled so the map section is useless. Also never quite sure if it has paired or not and the graph only randomly updates.
I am currently having to re-pair the tag with my phone every day. No matter how interesting the information, or how fantastic the technology, I am unlikely to persist with something that I can't rely on to stay connected. Too much faff.
Tag wouldn't accept firmware update from app and displayed 0 data for 3 days. Following a talk on Twitter with makers my account now gives an error when attempting to login on the app.
I find the app and tag quite convenient. I just leave tracking on constantly which is apparently a battery drain but as I have chargers at work and home and plug my phone in by default I have never noticed. The tag itself is magic, never have to charge it. It's small and light enough you can just put in a pocket and forget about it. The air quality data then is quite interesting. Telling about how around large roads it spikes up, or even when just cooking at home. Also noticeable is how it shows that on high pollution days it doesn't really matter where you are, you're going to be inhaling that bad stuff. I've now been using it for several months and will find it interesting to see how things stack up over the year. Will the summer days compare badly to the horrendous still winter days and pollution alerts we've had?
Needs an easier to access pairing button. Requires regular pressing or "tag not found". Mileage tracking only captures 0-50% of my bike riding. Perhaps a start/stop feature is needed like on Strava. First week mileage: Cleanspace 10.51; Strava 68.2.
Great when it works, but regularly stops tracking and then you have to notice, delve into the settings, switching tracking off and then back on and hope it works again.
They've removed the easy to use track my journey button from the front of the app to somewhere in the settings. Seems like poor UX for something that wants to promote the idea of clean miles. There isn't an easy way to see if the tag is actively connected and picking up data, tag sometimes hit and miss with connecting to the phone.
My cycling journeys are shown as unclean and shorter, the tag is not connecting with the app. The app is draining the battery very quickly.
After and update over the new year the app can not see the tag or allow pairing, I'm sure they will fix it.
It worked well for a few weeks after a shaky start. Readings went haywire fro zero to very high. Now tag is invisible to phone. I had such high hopes for a while, now bitterly disappointed. DELETED!!! I really regret doing this as I had such high hopes for the gadget. If you are doing science you must be reliable, repeatable, trustworthy and a reference standard. Before it clapped out it was none of these... What a disappointing bummer!
Have just received my tag, and having eventually managed to get it to pair it now says there is a firmware update. However when I select update firmware the app says it can't read the tag status and it gets stuck in an infinite 'retry or cancel' loop. It's still connected via bluetooth though.
Worked for the first weeks or so back in August. Then the tag started losing contact to my phone and gps and now does nothing. Tried latest update but it seems like journey tracking is no longer supported so no way of knowing what is happening... Real shame.
Never had any luck with this. Erratic at best but now the tag won't hook up at all. Tried it with two phones without success; I give up.
It used to be on the home screen, it's disappeared with the latest update. I can't record my journeys without it!
Paired the tag successfully before. Haven't used this app in a while, when launched again could not use tag or pair it again. Tried uninstalling, unparing... Doesn't work anymore
Just that really - will not open on my phone
i cant Sync my tag with my android, when it reach the 50% or less it fails im from mexico
As an average every second journey is cut short, so the readings account for much less than they should.
Tried several times to pair it to my android device. It find the sensor and gets to around 50% but then fails.
Clunky software and hardware which needs resetting often and then you lose the readings :( clean space tag is a beta product
Used this pretty much solidly since I got the tag, great (and often surprising) to see where the best and worst air is. Only problem is that the app eats battery like nothing else on my phone! It seems to keep awake and use location almost constantly, which I'd guess has something to do with it?
Powerful data put into compelling, easy to understand visualizations. App never crashes and is really to use, now I have a Clean Space Tag, I'm checking it every couple of hours!
I'm really interested in tracking the air pollution on my daily bike ride to work and around my young family in central London. I've spent a lot on a tag to do this. The app works OK but I find many elements hard to fathom. Under My Air the Air Map must be from public data while I think the Air Graph is just based on my tag. But, I don't know for sure. I'd love to clearly see when data is coming from the tag and to have clear separation of personal tag data from public estimates generally. Now that offers have gone (a good change in my view) the way CleanMiles are represented (as a currency) makes less sense. All needs a major design rethink. It'd be much better if many elements were removed or made less prominent. Starting to feel my investment in the tag was a waste of money. Let down by the app.
There were rewards and now there isn't uninstall
