DIY crochet baby boots, while it might be easier to buy the newborn his first pair of baby boots, it is more fun to knit them--in the latest pastel color--and give them as a gift at the baby shower. These instructions are for knitting baby boots in a 6-month size.
Things You'll Need
• Size #1 knitting needles
• Small scissors
• Ruler
• 1 ball yarn
• Pencil and paper
• Select a soft, lightweight yarn in a patterned or solid pastel baby color. While the instructions call for 1 ball of yarn, it is best to buy an extra one in case you run short. Knit a small square to make sure that the gauges are the same. Gauge: 15 stitches = 2 inches, 15 ridges = 2 inches.
• Cast on 34 stitches. Knit 22 stitches on row 1. Turn the needles and on row 2 knit only 10 stitches. Knit 10 stitches for row 3. Continue until you are left with only 14 ridges in what is known as the "garter stitch."
• Make the foot of the baby boot by joining and knitting the 12 stitches that are on the left-hand needle for only one row. For the next row, simply knit 12 stitches. Do this by picking up and knitting the first stitch of each of the 14 ridges on the edge of the instep (that you have just completed). Continue by knitting 10 more stitches from the instep (picking up and then knitting 14 stitches) from the other edge of the instep. On the next row, pick up and knit 12 stitches, continuing to pick up and knit the first stitch in each of the 14 ridges on the edge of the instep. Knit 10 instep stitches, then pick up and knit 14 stitches on the other edge of the instep. Knit the remaining 12 stitches. This should give you a total of 62 stitches knitted for the instep of the boot. Keep knitting the garter stitch as before until it measures 1 1/4 inches, or about 9 ridges in total.
• Complete knitting the boot by slowly decreasing the next three rows.
Row 1: Decrease by knitting 2 together, knitting 27 and then kitting 2 together twice, knit 27, knit 2 together (58 stitches remaining).
Row 2: Knit 2 together, knit 25 and again knit 2 together (54 stitches remaining).
Row 3: Knit 2 together, knit 2 together two times, knit 23 stitches, then knit 2 together (50 stitches remaining). Bind off.
• Make the straps by casting on 32 stitches and knitting for two rows. On the third row, knit 2 and yarn over (yo), creating the buttonholes. Knit 2 together, and continue knitting to the end of the row. Knit one row and then bind off. Make the second strap by working the buttonhole when you get to the end of the row.
• Finish the knitted piece by placing it on an ironing board. Place a very damp towel or clean moist cloth on top, and iron with a hot iron. Ironing causes the pieces to be flat and even so they can easily sewn together and have an even seam.
• Use a needle and thread and sew the back steams. Then sew the 12 center stitches of the cast-on edge of the strap to the 12 cast-on stitches at the center of the back.
Finish by sewing on the other strap to the button, in the same way, but on the opposite side. Set aside to cool.
So, what do you waiting for? Let's make your baby boots with this example. Good luck!
