Mayas. Lenguaje de la belleza

"Mayas, el lenguaje de la belleza. Miradas cruzadas" es una aproximación a los mayas prehispánicos distinta a la narrativa cronológica o a la temática que gira en torno a los aspectos que los distinguen como grupo cultural. En ella tiempos, estilos y funciones se conjugan para ofrecer una visión del arte maya, de los valores ideológicos en él plasmados, y de la trascendencia de estos conceptos a lo largo del tiempo y del espacio, centrándose particularmente en las representaciones de un elemento predominante en su plástica: el cuerpo, al que idealizaron revelando su propia concepción del hombre y sus paradigmas de belleza —entendiendo a ésta no como un mero valor estético, sino en su más amplio sentido: la belleza sublime en la que se relacionan la virtud y lo divino, las fuerzas de la naturaleza, la estructura del cosmos y el tiempo cíclico.

Mediante diversas manifestaciones artísticas, algunas con un exquisito realismo y otras con interpretaciones más simbólicas e idealizadas, los mayas revelaron múltiples detalles físicos de los individuos que conformaron su sociedad, pero también de los elementos de su entorno, como los animales a los que consideraron su propia co-esencia y, por supuesto, de sus dioses, a quienes mostraron con rasgos humanos entremezclados con elementos animales, vegetales, o bien, imaginados.

Hoy podemos entender estas representaciones gracias al importante corpus de textos escritos por indígenas mayas y mestizos, así como por el testimonio de los cronistas del siglo XVI, quienes describieron los atavíos, prácticas y costumbres de los mayas con los que tuvieron contacto; pero, principalmente, debemos nuestro conocimiento actual sobre los mayas prehispánicos a la valiosa labor de investigación e interpretación desarrollada a lo largo del tiempo por arqueólogos, antropólogos físicos, etnohistoriadores e historiadores del arte, entre otros grupos de académicos especializados en esa cultura.
Pero, principalmente, debemos nuestro conocimiento actual sobre los mayas prehispánicos a la valiosa labor de investigación e interpretación desarrollada a durante largo tiempo por arqueólogos, antropólogos físicos, etnohistoriadores e historiadores del arte, entre otros grupos de académicos especializados en la cultura maya.

Son justo estas tres miradas las que se cruzan en la exposición para explorar las representaciones y significados del cuerpo en el arte maya, visto desde cuatro perspectivas:

El cuerpo como lienzo, que se refiere a los paradigmas de belleza manifestados mediante las modificaciones corporales que se practicaban, muchas veces para semejarse a sus dioses y otras para honrarlos.

El cuerpo revestido, que muestra los diferentes tipos de indumentaria utilizada por los mayas como expresiones de su sistema social e ideológico.

La contraparte animal, en la que se habla precisamente sobre las representaciones de estos seres que, de acuerdo con la cosmovisión maya, acompañan al humano desde su nacimiento.

"Mayas, the language of beauty. Crossed Glances" is a different approach to the chronological narrative or the theme that revolves around aspects that distinguish them as pre-Hispanic Mayan cultural group. In her time, styles and functions combine to offer a vision of Maya art, ideological it embodied values, and the importance of these concepts over time and space, focusing particularly on the representations of a predominant element in its plastic: the body, which idealized revealing his own conception of man and his paradigms of beauty-understanding to it not as a mere aesthetic value but in its broadest sense: the sublime beauty in virtue relate and divine, the forces of nature, structure of the cosmos and the cycle time.

Through various art forms, some with exquisite realism and others with more symbolic and idealized interpretations, the Maya revealed multiple physical details of individuals who formed their society, but also the elements of their environment, like the animals they considered their own co-essence and of course his gods, who showed with human features interspersed with animal, vegetable or, imagined elements.

Today we can understand these representations thanks to the important corpus of texts written by Mayan Indians and mestizos, as well as the testimony of the chroniclers of the sixteenth century, who described the trappings, practices and customs of the Maya with whom they had contact; but mainly we owe our current knowledge of the prehispanic Maya to the valuable work of research and interpretation developed over time by archaeologists, physical anthropologists, ethno-historians and art historians, among other groups of academics specializing in that culture.

Are just three glances that intersect at the exhibition to explore the representations and meanings of the body in Maya art, seen from four perspectives:

The body as canvas, which refers to the paradigms expressed by bodily beauty modifications practiced, often to resemble other gods and to honor them.

The coated body, showing the different types of clothing used by the Maya as expressions of their social and ideological system.

Animal counterpart, which speaks precisely about the representations of these beings who, according to the Mayan worldview, accompanying the human from birth.

The bodies of divinity, which presents a series of images of deities and beings of prehispanic Maya pantheon.
