About Stereogram for Cardboard 2.0

Stereogram uses Google Cardboard to present vivid 3D images from history.

Powered by the NYPL Stereogranimator (http://stereo.nypl.org), Stereogram allows you to:

-Search over 40,000 historical stereographs by voice
-Browse popular images from Stereogranimator.
-Curate your own list of favorite stereographs.
-View 3D images of your own

Stereogram requires a special housing for your smartphone, made to the "Google Cardboard" spec: http://cardboard.google.com , such as the DODOcase.

Other 3D/VR viewers such as the Durovis Dive, etc may be supported.

The Nexus 5 is the ideal phone for this app, or any 1080p smartphone that is compatible with Google Cardboard. The experience with other handsets may vary.

If you got a chance to try this app, please leave a review with your thoughts!

PLEASE update this wonderful effort or explain how to easily access groups of images so that it can be used in classrooms. I want to be able set up "sets" for different time periods...starting most particularly with stunning collections of Civil War photos. PLEASE anyone who can help teachers get this ready for spring use. By Fall the kids will all have some VR setup and we will be behind the times with education applications. The classic stereogram card photos that span this amazing 40k collection need to be more easly organized for no fail classroom use....and should find their greatest app in use for schools. TO ALL STEREOSCOPE FANS...WE KNOW THERE USED TO BE "WORLD TOURS" OF THESE CARDS SET UP IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES BACK TO THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. LETS START THIS CENTURY OF VR TECH--> Back In the Schools-->!!

The photos are amazing--a real trip back in time. I'll bet the photographers could never have imagined their works would be available in a tool like this, but it is a perfect way to use them. Only problem is that some of the images seem to be out of "registration" so it's hard to get the full 3D effect. Is there any way to be able to "nudge" the images a bit so they get back into registration?

Hey guys, great simple app. But ever since I updated to Nougat I can't seem to view my own pictures. I've got the jps files in the stereogallery folder and they're not detected. Is this a bug? This is the best option I had, now it's broken.

Very cool concept. Great options. Love viewing these photos through my cardboard. The only thing I noticed is that I found myself constantly rotating in order to keep the main screen on front of me.

I'm a stereo freak. My favorite ones are Diableries. This app is easy for me because I'm cheating. Na na na boo boo! I'm using Brian May's invention called The OWL. You can learn about it on the London Stereoscopic Society social media pages or Brian May's social media pages. I can usually free view slides, but not on this app. I noticed a review someone needed help getting slides. You can buy slides, or you can go on social media and collect slides. Just observe copyright laws. Brian May is about to release a Queen in 3D book. I found a history book of the railroads done in stereos at a museum. I'm pretty sure I'm the first person to buy one seeing how happy he was. Best way to make it relevant is to show them these cameras are used now by film makers. It's how they make the 3D version.

... if you don't want to spend the rest of your life thrilled by this app. It's wonderful. It also made me breakfast. Or I accidentally stole my neighbours breakfast. I'm unsure. I'm not a thief. Stop looking at me like that! Get this app instead.

Too bad it doesn't use compass instead of gyro. Images just drift without interaction. Cannot use at all. Can't get past first image. Would be cool if it worked.

P70%

It's a great idea, but there's something a little off with the setup that makes the VR not the most comfortable. A few tweaks and this could be a go-to app.

Q70%
by Q####:

I have no idea what the "pull" instruction means. How do you pull with a phone? If instructions were clear I would rate as 5.

Q70%
by Q####:

I found myself sinning around chasing the images.

Q70%
by Q####:

Really really want to use this app.

T70%

Might be my device and I know cardboard is not ever going to be rift, but it's this kind of issue that lets cardboard down. Good idea for an app though!

X70%
by X####:

Can't change images yes I tried touching the screen I'm using a galaxy s6 and I don't have problems with the magnet on other apps

The very first time I tried Cardboard was right after I'd gone to see an exhibit of Pompeii artifacts, which included stereoscopic 19c images of the excavation. I was so happy to discover there was an app to see historic 3D photos! The voice search is a great idea, although I wish the UI wasn't so reliant on the flaky magnet switch. And yes, there is one Pompeii photo in the archives.

I must salute the effort that went into making this app. It contains over 40,000 pictures, though some are repeated. I have collected stereo-opticon cards for several years and have appreciated them in an old time viewer. Seeing them like this is easier and equally enjoyable. It is easy to move back and forth in this app, though sometimes I don't know where I am in a sequence. Thank you for your efforts. This truly makes the cardboard VR viewer a useful item.

Was so delighted someone had taken the time to do this. Invaluable! Would love a "full screen" mode that displays the image without having to "look around" a virtual space. Would also love a settings menu that allowed me to turn off the vibration/haptic feedback on each action. Just food for thought for potential future updates!

Really like this app. Simple. Works well with Nexus 5x and View-Master from Mattel (unlike the actual Mattel apps!).

This idea is amazing and I love it! But I want to use it to view stereograms of St. Anthony Falls in Minnesota during the late 1800's and the search doesn't work. I know there are tons of these stereograms in the NYC library system because I can find them on their website but this app fails to pull them up for me to view.

S70%

This is a great use of the cardboard app! Makes archived photos from the turn of the century accessible at the click of a cardboard button! A great way to look at history!

A70%
by A####:

This is awesome! There is a drift problem for sure, but still amazing to see these historical photos and people, and the neat stereo/3d effects they tried, even in the 1800s. You can even save favorites, share, and all that.

H70%
by H####:

Good interface, but I mainly wanted this for viewing my own stereogram images from 2D photos I'd taken. I can't get it working with the StereoGallery/left and /right folders for each image. 5 stars if I could.

T70%
by T####:

On functionality but has lots of potential

H70%
by H####:

...what is "pull"? How do I pull to select next image or one of the buttons? I've been nodding and jumping and throwing the cardboard around but only got to the first image. I've definitely missed some instructions.

Z70%
by Z####:

I don't know if it's an issue with my holding the viewer or the application. All I know is that just with sitting and looking at images one after the other the view moves to the right constantly.

N70%
by N####:

Reminds me of the stereogram my grandparents had. The drift is really the only downside and the developer is already working on it. Great voice activated search feature. Get rid of the drift and you're golden.

T70%
by T####:

Took me beck to my childhood looking through my dad's stereogram with players cigarette cards.

T70%
by T####:

Just moves can't select on the Mattel viewmaster and nexus 5 running marshmallow.

T70%
by T####:

However there is some drift to the right, if that is fixed then it will be perfect

T70%
by T####:

It's nice to be able to browse the old library images. It would be nice to have support for mpo files as well as jps. Thanks!

Nothing but a black screen.

F70%

If there weren't so many duplicate images. This is the fault of the New York Public Library collection, not the app developer.

D70%

Somebody needs to create one of these apps for all the old Sawyer/GAF/Viewmaster slides!!

D70%

It does a good job with local file browsing too.

D70%

Does not work on my Note 4edge

D70%

First program I tried with Cardboard, probably a mistake, as Cardboard is a joke, pretty much not even living up to its name. Images pop on and off at random, no instructions. How do you do anything with it? Oh well, You Tube still can't do half the things a 30 year old VHS machine could, so why should I expect anything out of Cardboard VR?

K70%
by K####:

A great idea but on my S4 it drifts.

U70%
by U####:

But awesome nonetheless

D70%
by D####:

The only thing that prevents me from giving this app 5 stars is that on my Nexus 5 running Lollipop, it continuously drifts to the right. After viewing 2 or 3 images, I find that I have to snap my head left in order to move things back into alignment.

This is really fabulous. The Library of Congress and The Smithsonian Institution should borrow this app too. Thanks for doing this. It would be handy and add to the fun if you'd maybe suggest some searches or include a list of interesting topics..

D70%
by D####:

Giving 5 stars despite having never actually used this app, but think the dev deserves it, those who have used it say its great and I believe them, just gutted my POS won't run it but know the dev is working on a fix
