About SG50 Quiz
In celebration of Singapore's 50th birthday, Pei Tong Primary School's Infocomm Club has created an app to commemorate our Nation's achievement. Working with our IT instructors, students learned how to create a simple quiz app with questions about Singapore's history.
Divided into 4 periods - Pre-war, War, Independence and Post-Independence - the mini-quizzes trace the journey of a small island from centuries ago to modern times.
Singapore's ancient name was Temasek, and whether it was folklore or history, a Sumatran prince Sang Nila Utama gave the island the name Singapura after spotting a creature that looked like a lion when he landed on her shores.
The British colonial masters came in 1819 when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles of the East India Company saw the geographical advantage of Singapore. Located at the crossroads of the Far East and Western civilization, with a natural deep harbour, Singapore thrived as a British trading outpost. People from around the region - India, China, Malaya came and soon settled down and made Singapore home.
Then came World War 2 - where Singapore fell to the Japanese. The British were unable to defend our small island, and for many years the people suffered. After the war, our people learned the painful lesson that we cannot depend on anyone except ourselves to defend our home.
Singapore joined the Malaya federation for a few years before being expelled due to differences in opinion regarding race-based governance. Under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore had to survive and grow, and it has been an amazing journey for the past 50 years.
