About Akebi Japanese Dictionary

With stroke-order independent handwriting recognition, 320k+ example sentences, 200k+ words and 6k+ Kanji database!

Akebi allows you to use character masks to filter out thousands of words from a large Japanese Dictionary. It allows you to specify what radicals appear in each character of the word, and set particular characters. Using this, you can find extremely specific words without a lot of Japanese knowledge.
Akebi is designed to allow fast searching, and as such, the word can be specified by last letter, first letter or any letter in between.

NOTE ABOUT THE INTERNET PERMISSION:
I hope this doesn't scare you off downloading Akebi: It is fully available offline, but the dictionary needs to be downloaded first. If you choose to allow it, Akebi will also send a small bit of analytical data back to me so I can find out which features are most used (It absolutely will not send anything if you disable it.).

Some of the features include:

- Word lists
These allow you to add any word you're searching for to a list with just one press. The next time this word fits a mask you're searching for, it appears in red at the top of all possible words, to make it easy to find in case you forget. It's also good for words that the dictionary doesn't have, like names specific to what you're doing. You can even test yourself on these words too using a flashcard test! If you want, you can export them to a text file for use elsewhere as well.

- Radical search
Specify which characters of the word contain what radicals. Words that don't fit this will be filtered out.

- Inbuilt Japanese Keyboard
You don't even need to swap keyboards to use Akebi. You just jump in and start typing. But, if you prefer, you can turn this feature off if it causes issues with your keyboard, or if you just want to use your normal keyboard! You can even pick Akebi's keyboard/handwriting recognition as your input method!

- Kanji descriptions
Find out how common a character is, what grade level it is, what it means, how to read it, its Unicode number, how many strokes are in it, its reference numbers (Heisig, Nelson...), a stroke order diagram for it, a decomposition of it, all the words that contain it...

- English to Japanese searching
Search with English as well!

- Handwriting recognition
Akebi has custom built handwriting recognition - and stroke order doesn't matter! Find that complex kanji quickly thanks to the "Tomoe" handwriting database!

- Example sentences
Akebi has 320,000+ example sentences: search for any word and find out how to use it in a sentence! Tap the sentence for further information: including each word in the sentence's definition and reading.

- Kanji test
Test yourself on any kanji you want! Create sets and test yourself!

- Deconjugation
Search for 言って and you'll get results for 言う. Works for other forms too, such as ます, ない, た, られる/Potential form.

- Animated stroke order diagrams
See exactly how to draw a kanji correctly!

- Asynchronous loading
Akebi opens instantly: you can start typing in the word you want to find while Akebi loads the dictionary in the background.

- Tiny memory footprint
Akebi uses only 20mb of storage space for the entirety of its data. Compressions are handwritten by myself!

- Holo themed
Using ActionBarSherlock, I've totally rethemed the entire UI, adding tonnes more features and making the app much easier to use

- No DRM
Because it just makes everyone angry!

- No Ads
Because they kill battery life!

Akebi has to do an initial ~20mb download when it starts - so make sure to have internet access on first use!

A really cool app. You can use it to learn Japanese applying different strategies and approaching kanji in different ways (in context, decomposed, through stroke order, etc). The design is nice and it's simple to find your way around. Certainly there might be some little things to improve. Excellent app! Keep it up!

This app is great as a dictionary, great for drilling before tests, and the handwriting quiz is great. One of my favorite things about this app is the flashcard quiz "focus on 7 until 3 in a row". It really does help when you're focusing on short term memory. I'm now trying to find a Chinese app similar to this one which includes this feature

Great app! It's very useful for studying, translating and finding the meaning of unknown kanji. The only problem is that it can't be moved to my sd card but I don't know the reason? Sadly it's taking up a lot of storage space but I'm still gonna keep it because it's so handy.

I haven't had this app for long, but I just had to write my first ever (after several years) app review—I'm that impressed. Unfortunately, the app seems unable to interpret my handwritten 子, including kanji which have 子 as a radical! This has been a persistent issue which I have not had with any other kanji or radical. Additionally, I think preloaded lists with flash cards, as well as a way to more easily mass-import kanji and/or words from a dictionary and the kanji grid, would be quite helpful. Thanks! :D

I stopped using this dictionary because I thought the handwriting hasn't been added. But I reinstalled it and tried the tutorial, and I found out how to use it! Well done, I only think that you can improve the design! A better design will make it a better app. I don't necessarily mean a different design, I mean an improved-modern design :)

Best jp-eng dict by far. And can you change stroke by order to the big example, i mean like brush stroke. I have bad vision so i cant recognize right away about the stroke. And if you using it you cant remove those number order. Any way is good app.

I hate this app, I don't understand anything. I don't understand about kanji, japanese word in up of the english word and more. When I search some word it's too many word out. Example I search (your)there is so many word in there. So, i don't know what is (your) in japanese and how to call it. I'm just a little kid. I'm playing japanese games and I don't know the words. so, please make this app easier!

Shut up and take my money! Oh wait, it's free. And there are no ads. And it has a built-in kanji study tool that lets you search for words containing each one. And there are no ads. This is a fantastic dictionary and I think I'll uninstall the other one I had been using.

This is the best dictionary I've ever seen in my life! I've learnt kanji roots and lot of another words with it!:-) but sometimes (very rare) it becomes slow at kanji grid part... anyway it is awesome and I gave it a five star!

O70%
by O####:

Great app! But you said that's no ads. I still see ads when i opening the app. Please remove it, i'll rate 5 star later, thanks. ** Edit : 2014/10/22 : It's weird. Yesterday it always open ads when i run the app. But today it's ok. Anyway, i'll rate 5 stars for you :) Thanks!

The app is great, though I had my data lost. I do backup, I just don't know what happened when I reflashed rom then load data in the app. Maybe an online storage integration would be good, though Im not sure. Good luck to the developer

Is a mixed writing/translation/reading list with words and set phrases. I love that feature in zKanji (desktop software). LOVE the drawing recognition! Many others suck, but this is superb!

Very very very very very recommended. I want to request "training mode". It's a blank section where you can hand write hiragana, katakana, or kanji. And the system checks for failures in your writing. So you can fix it. This training mode will be very helpful for starters like me. And one more thing, the creator soo friendly!

R70%
by R####:

wow! This is really what im looking for. In my opinion, handwriting recognition is the most valuable feature. However it sometimes does not recognize my writings well. Hope you can improve it better. Plz keep up ur good work!!!

Oops, I accidently deleted my old review so I'll write new one. This app is as good as I want: free, offline, hand writing recognization, especially the search function, it is made so confortable that even a new lerning japanese person can search for a complicated kanji. I really love it. The problem I've found so far is missing the 4th condition to use Akebi stated in its license.

Best Japanese dictionary app ever! It's just so complete and striking, also completely free with full functions! Can learn even more from the breakdown of sentence^^ Will there be a conjugation function in the future? :3

Life-changing. I study both Chinese and Japanese and so writing kanji for me is a matter of "the destination is more important than the journey", which means I hate stroke order. I have a great app for Chinese which handles this brilliantly, but for Japanese, stroke order is what most dictionary handwriting systems are based on. While I can still get snagged on a few kanji where I mess up the amount of strokes, I'm no longer tearing my hair out whenever I have to look up a kanji by handwriting. Akebi's handwritten entry system is a total game-changer for Japanese dictionaries, and that alone is enough for me to recommend it wholeheartedly.

Not only is it a fantastic dictionary, it's also a GREAT way to study Kanji. I know there's a conjugation feature in the works, and that is...well, that'd make this the only appyou'd need for any of your Japanese-learning needs!

You're probably looking here to see if you should get this dictionary, right? You should. I love how the creator took into consideration the fact that we use dictionaries for studying and added the flashcard option. No ads?! Shocking since it's so good. Plus the slight humor made smile. Not many dictionaries do that yknow.

I'm extremely impressed with this Japanese dictionary. It's a little differently designed from a typical dictionary but it only takes about 5 minutes to adjust and once you do, it's easy to appreciate. It is almost certainly the best japanese dictionary for Android (tied with IMI perhaps). If the developer is interested in a possible improvement, I think a history feature would improve usability.

Very nice design, English and Japanese lookup (romaji and kana), kanji lookup, kanji stroke order, offline, example sentences, save kanji or words to lists, flashcard reviews. Basically this app has everything except word conjugations which is supposedly a planned feature. Aaaand no ads! EDIT: A few cons: The example sentences kinda suck - lots are waay to long or use very obscure words. Luckily, this app makes it very easy to look up the words in the sentence. Also, could not find the word, 仰向き

There's something Im confused.. why there's two or three variations of kanji stroke order? What the heck is Vtlst? MidFst? I'd appreciate it if you can explain it to me.. thx for all your effort in making this app

I started using this dictionary after asking recommendation from my friends and this is really the best Japanese dictionary I have. It really help my language skills a little. And the best thing is... IT'S ENTIRELY FREE!!!! Yay!

UI is awesome! The font is a bit unorganized though. At first I was wondering about that 'weird' feature for searching kanji but it's surprisingly useful! The handwriting recognition is superb as well. I have no complaint about verb conjugations and such, but the examples are terrible. There are so many mistakes of word reading in examples. I'll write feedback to give details about them. And I know you're still fixing things, so I'm looking forward to it.

I've only spent a short time with the app, but I can already see this replacing the other app I been using. Was a bit skeptical at first due to the low install base, but doubts were blown away quite quickly. There's still a few rough edges here and there, but none of them are deal breakers. Huge props to the dev for responding to all the reviews as well. And it's ad-free too; how?

except some mistakes in the sentence forming example sentences, and also it would be perfect if you could easily save lists on SD, mine doesn't quit work. I hope you can fix it next version, except a those few flaws, the example sentences and flash cards are awesome. would gladly pay money for this app

Hello. There seems to be some issues with the example sentences database and need someone to confirm. 事がす and 事がする appear in almost every third example, usually at at the end of a predicative or a noun. These "forms" do not appear in ANY examples online in the same context as in akebi's example database. I can provide screenshots if necessary. I need to know if this just calls for a reinstall on my end or if this is widespread. Thanks! Akebi is otherwise a great tool and I use it alot

I've tried quite a few other Japanese dictionary apps, WWWJDIC, Jisho and the likes. The only noteworthy things this dictionary lacks compare to them are OCR and history, though I can do without both. Sleek design, offline, free/without ads, inclusive, feature-rich and a lot more that would probably count as spoilers, haha. Also, plus points for the humor. I probably haven't used Akebi enough to run into any substantial hiccups, but so far it's one of the best app I've seen. おつかれさま Craxicさん (。>﹏<。)

the only thing wrong with this program is that i didnt find it sooner. ive been learning japanese for over a year now and this app would have made a world of a diference . my god the amount of work this man put into the tutorial alone is amazing. he really cares that you the user can learn everythingyou may need to know about the app. its so user friendly no in app purchases. no nonsense. ive been using jed and anki and obenkyo and various other apps. when this one does it all and doest it better.

I just downloaded this app. I can't believe that something this functional and comprehensive is a free app without ads! This is better than any of the ad/paid apps I've used before and provides great depth for learning, practice and review.

During a trip to Japan, I was extremely happy to have this app available to identify the kanji and words I didn't know, because the handwritten kanji recognition works really well. The splash screen is a bit strange, but once it's gone the app is actually quite efficient and useful, though I regret the old design, which was simpler but more effective in my opinion. Despite the design I don't like as much as the original one, and the list management system that works strangely (I was unable to backup or restore any vocabulary list on my old phone, had to refill it manually every time), I give it 5 stars because it was really useful to me in a real-life situation.

Hey, I love this dictionary. It's so helpful and visually appealing. I actually constantly check Play Store hoping there'll be an update, which is something i don't do for any other apps. Only two things that would make this better. A history would be invaluable, as someone else mentioned. But also some sort of explanation about the kanji features? I really don't understand the kanji grid, and it's the only thing without a cute tutorial for some reason.

This is definitely the best I found when I was looking for a japanese offline dictionary in autumn 2014. Big thanks to the developer! :) Great hand writing recognition already included. Great integration with other apps, for example Ankidroid. Great UI and colors :D could use also a "night" theme, meaning a black theme for saving battery, that kind of thing. Also, it displays the characters with a chinese fonts, for example in "過ぎる" the little square in the kanji is on the left side of the big square, while it should be on the right side. But this maybe an system-wide android problem, because it appears in other apps too. I had this problem also in Ankidroid, but I was able to solve it by installing a font into the app. It may be that there's an easy solution to this but I still haven't found it, and it doesn't bother me anyway, it's just that it could be confusing for beginners who don't know that there's a difference between chinese and japanese fonts.

I love the interface- easy, smooth, and simple. There developer behind this app has put a great amount of energy and time into this app and is quite a person, him/herself. You can see a bit of the developer's side through the tutorial- very funny and enjoyable to go through. The dictionary itself helps a lot and can determine if the word that you put in the search in which type of conjugation its in (which is quite neat). It also gives you examples and several meanings of it. You don't need to be online to search up these words but just make sure the dictionary is downloaded beforehand ^^ In addition to that, you can save some words as flashcards and quiz yourself. Nonetheless, this is a GREAT APP THAT IS FREE. It helps and super easy to follow! I really appreciate it and I would like to thank the developer sincerely.

This app is great! I found it by chance last year, and it completely blows away other options. There are two things I feel this would greatly benefit from implementing: OCR and Anki integration. OCR would be a big help in reading a bunch of complex Kanji in at the same time. A word of advice, tho': Give us some way to reuse the same image. Anki support would be useful to convert our lists immediately into a deck we can use in Anki.

I've finally found the perfect Japanese dictionary. This is the most feature-packed dictionary I've found, and unlike all the others, it actually works. The advanced search is amazing, and the handwriting recognition actually works. And it's freaking free! The only negatives I can think of are the slightly confusing interface (which I quickly got used to), and an outdated design. But I prioritize function over form, so this still gets 5 stars from me

M70%
by M####:

The kanji search is powerful but takes a bit to get used to. The kanji quizzing function is very useful, though still confusing to understand (what is "infusing"? And what is"knowledge level"). Also, I wish there were some pre-provided lists to use, but that's just me nitpicking. Overall, this is definitely the best dictionary I've used so far!
