About Sibley Birds - Lite

NB: Please backup your list before installing v1.1.0! Your list should upgrade automatically but there have been instances on certain devices where a list upgrade has failed and is lost.

This is a LITE version of The Sibley eGuide to the Birds of North America but is fully functional and includes ONLY 30 species, compared to 813 species in the full app. If you like the way this app works please check out the full version.

NB: Please note that an additional download of 28MB is required once this app has been installed. Please ensure you use a WiFi connection to prevent additional data costs.

The Sibley Guide to Birds has become the most popular and fastest selling printed guide to birds as well as the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to North American Birds. Now this free LITE version includes:

* Over 240 hi-res images including detailed maps showing not just winter and summer range but also migration and rare occurrence.
* Every species is shown perched and in flight from above and below.
* Shows every major seasonal, age, and male/female variation.
* Detailed coverage of subspecies and regional variations.
* Detailed descriptions of songs and calls, comparing similar species measurements of length, wingspan, and weight for almost every species.

Now all of that information is available in an easy-to-navigate portable format on any Android device. In addition this version of the app also includes:

● Swipe to move to the next or previous species.
● One-tap enlargement of images and rotating the device expands images further.
● Over 190 carefully-selected and edited sound recordings. Nearly all species are represented with multiple examples showing the range of vocalizations.
● The ability to compare any two images, maps, or sounds, side by side on the screen.
● The ability to filter by state/province, so that you see only the species likely to occur in your location, and to further reduce the possibilities to the most common birds in that area.
● The ability to search by distinguishing features such as size, prominent colors, habits, and group.
● A basic personal species list that stores your sightings saved to the device* with the ability to export the list to your SD card or email.

* Uninstalling/reinstalling the app will result in the loss of your list, it is recommended that you keep your own backup (master list) separate from the application.

I haven't used this app for a while. Just tried using it with my Nexus 6P. Perhaps it doesn't work with Android 6 ???

Downloaded the 'Lite' version as a test before paying $20 for the real one. Opens but doesn't work on my Galaxy S4 running Android 5.0.1. Type partial name into search and nothing happens. Might try later if/when I get a newer phone.

I need to be with one in nature

Sibley is awesome, don't get me wrong, but this app is missing a ton of species. Also I couldn't figure out how to add sp. to the list in the 5 minutes during which I had the app.

Very nice app and I would give it 5 stars if I could hear the bird calls. I'm using a Samsung Note Pro and no matter what I do....no bird calls. I would love to buy the full version but will not do so until this issue is fixed. I also downloaded this on my Droid Turbo smartphone with the same results. It would appear from other comments that I'm not the only one with this problem. Please fix and I'll buy the full app.

There may not be many birds on this but the description tells you this quite clearly. The ones which are on there are great. The pictures are easy to call up, the descriptions are concise, the range maps are clear and the sounds are great. I used it for a while to work out if I wanted to buy the full version and had decided within a few minutes that I would certainly be doing that.

Sibley's bird illustrations are excellent and being able to zoom in on them is a glorious thing. Plus, by virtue of being an app, they can be sorted and filtered in helpful ways. And this is the part that's a bit of letdown -- information just isn't presented in the most helpful way. It has a very Android Gingerbread feel to it, and zooming in on raster images (can the text at least be vector?) is a little disappointing when the details you are now so enticed to see are pixelated and compressy. Still bigger than the book, at least. Overall I'd say this app is missing the "feeling" of great graphic design that structures David's pictures and info -- the way his books do when you pick them up. This app should channel that white space, great text, alignments, etc. That is a Sibley app I would quickly pay 20 bucks for.

I've used Sibley's book for decades. Just got my first smartphone, and am pleased to see an app for the comprehensive book. I really love being able to hear the calls. The only glitch I found in this intro app is that some of the calls can't be heard when you play them. This may be just a problem with my cheapo tablet. Thanks to this intro app, I know I will like the paid version.

I wish all paid apps had full featured trials. This was nearly perfect for testing the UI and content quality.

Need more descriptions of calls

R70%

Good, but very few bids.

Y70%

More of a 'demo' for the pro version. Useless as is due to the limited number of species

U70%
by U####:

Not enough birds

F70%
by F####:

The free "lite" app is not even worth the download. I could not find any birds calls and a cardinal wasn't even one if the birds available. This is worthless

R70%
by R####:

This application provides accurate body and feather descriptions (with illustrations), and most importantly and exceptionally, includes An Audio Sample of The Bird's Song.

Doesn't work. Hangs on splash screen.

Z70%

Doesn't do anything but show a screen with the name of the app. Not chancing losing $20 installing pro version when lite does nothing

M70%

Nexus 7. The UI is poorly thought out- Range maps too small. No real details about birds. Search not powerful. Drawings are good quality of course but his book is better laid out.

M70%

Reinstalled it twice. Opening screen was frozen, search function just said the requested file was corrupted.

The pictures are good but the list is very incomplete. For example the barred owl is not listed for Wisconsin.
