Sibley Birds of North America for Android
Great birdwatching app. Content is top notch. Search is not great; it has name and taxonomic search but not based in size/shape/features. Best used if you need detailed information, rather than help narrowing down what you saw.
I just downloaded this and I am disappointed with the accuracy of the smart search for Alaska birds. Birds that are common and clearly mapped within the app to be IN Alaska do not show up in the smart search. Fix this and it will be a 5 star app and worth 20 dollars...otherwise I want a refund.
As always, great Sibley illustrations and descriptions. This app, however, is missing out on some key mobile platform functionality. For example, there is no feature to show similar species by sight or sound (Audubon shows similar species by sight and iBird shows similar sounding species as well). This app also lacks actual images of the birds which can be useful as well as not supporting searches using AOU four letter alpha codes.
Bought this app YEARS ago, now I upgraded my phone to a Samsung galaxy s8 and it wants permission to use my phone as well as my photos & media! Why? Didnt do this before!!! Fix this or I want a refund because it also says I have to setup the eguide app. WHAT EGUIDE APP?? When I got this that never came up, plus I followed the directions to go to my App Manager and nope no eguide as an option to enable. Very disappointed!!!
Love this app and it is easily my favorite birding ID app. Having the calls is super handy, as is the "compare" feature. Great illustrations and descriptions. Unlike an ID book, I always have this app with me. My one complaint about this app is that the search feature is still awful. I really don't want to take the time to hyphenate species in the field (e.g. "red tailed hawk" returns no results), and you still cannot search by species alpha code. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. I've talked to many other users with this complaint, as well. If the search feature worked as well as the eBird search, it'd be a five star app.
I purchased this app years ago and I am unable to open it. I loved it when it was working. I have tried to follow instructions and I still am unable to utilize this app. I am disappointed that this has not been resolved. Marilyn Abend
Bought a new phone, and now when trying to launch the app, it wants permission to 1. Sibley to make & handle phone calls; 2. Sibley to access my photos, media & files on my device. Why would a bird app need to access my personal files? Wasn't required when I purchased it last year. No thanks. I'll use my books so I can have privacy.
This is a great app....and the sale is nice too, but I purchased it at full price a couple of years ago. I just switched to an iphone and have been told that I can't use this app on my iphone. If they have the app in both platforms, and you've paid the sucker price, you should be able to get the app on your new phone, no matter what platform. The website states that you can reload the app on your new phone...both for android and iphone platforms. They should specify that you can't reload from one platform to another.
Too intrusive, simply won't run with location and phone permissions turned off. The lite version will. Misleading.
I replaced my phone and apparently I'm supposed to buy the app again!? Is there somebody in Sibleyland who can change that? Sad!
Best $20 I've ever spent. Sibley's comes in so handy whether on my own or on the job when guiding people through nature. Love it!
After update it stopped working. It used to be a great app but now useless.
A lot of my friends and all my family has this app and I'm sure they would all rate this app 5 star.I have learned about 80% of my birding and I would give this app a 100 stars but I can't.This is my first time ever rating anything and I did this because I saw that this app only had 4.4 star and I thought this app should at least have 5 star.Ihope you get this app and enjoy it.
Fixed the previous issue of not being able to access the app. Layout and navigation are subpar, but the content is great.
After years of issues on a Windows phone, I made the switch to Android and now this app is working great! Thanks to Cool Idea Solutions for supporting my platform change. Well worth the investment.
Best birding app on the market. I've tried most of them. Even write my own using SQL server and PHP. But this app does it all.
I don't carry books in the field anymore - they can't play songs;) Many people complain about permissions but the app needs to access your phone to confirm the purchase. You can manually remove permission later.
Great multimedia guide, very handy, good pictures.
Portable version of the book, audio files alone are worth getting the app.
Won't install on my MotoG4 with 64 GB of memory. waste of $20.
It rules
I was having issues loading onto new Galaxy Tab A 2016. It now loads and works properly. Thank you.
For most birders this app replaces the printed field guide. I've been birding since 1975, so leaving the book at home is weird, but wow what a nice change. I highly recommend it. I suggest you carry ear buds to listen to recorded songs and expand your identifications.
When is the app going to be updated on accordance with the 2ed of the books? Would love to be able to add accidental or rare species to my geographic location. Ie Neotropic Cormorant doesn't show up when I set my geographic location to NJ.
Is requiring too many permissions very intrusive
Good app, based off of a great book. Good as a multimedia guide. I feel it could have more details in the "smart search" feature, but all-in-all a good app.
I love this app, it's the most money I ever spent on one app (29.99 long ago.) Finding out that I can't share it with my family now because I bought it so long ago is troubling.
This was once a good app but it's now a unless app. Latest update doesn't get past the cover page. This app hasn't worked since spring of 2016.
On Android 7. I really like the pictures and calls for helping me identify. I've tried them all and this is my favorite. Easy, yet full featured.
Ridiculously expensive for a picture of a raptor, which is all I get with this app. Nothing more.
Switched to iPhone and they want to make me pay again
Indspensible
I use this every day. I love being able to journal on the sightings. As of 6/30/16 it does not work. Can't get past the splash screen. Memory problem.
I feel the latest update is a little wonky. Still a great app and still very useful.
Why on earth does this app need to "make and manage phone calls"???
Awesome
Info is high quality, but UI is bush league. Clearing the search field doesn't throw up the keyboard. Other situations where other apps know to throw up the keyboard, it doesn't. Using the log interface requires too many taps. Gotta hit Save 3X! (location, GPS, then the whole record). Gotta choose from a list of locations - once you've been to 10 places, the list gets long to scroll thru. I still carry my Peterson's book, but this helps when I forget it.
I purchased this, downloaded the software, I try to open it and all I get is the splash screen, it refuses to go any further. I can't even download the 'extra content' as it never goes past that stupid splash screen, waste of money imho.
The iphone version includes the extremely useful Compare feature. We pay the same for the Android version, but the Compare function does not exist in it. Why not?

This was a 5 star wonderful app until about 2 months ago. We have had it 3 or 4 years. Great to help identify. I started using it as my only list for birding. I logged when our first Osprey of the year came, when they first had eggs, when they hatched, etc. About all birds observed. Then about 2 months ago, I added something to my list noting the status and went back to look up something from an earlier date and every entry inside was identical to the first entry on the inside of it. ALL my notations were gone. I went out to the help section and sent an email asking what happened and if it was recoup able. I never even got an answer! I am so disappointed!
