eGuide to British Birds for Android
Don't expect any support. Good communications while I asked about moving from Windows version. Even offered to convert old list. Once I bought, all contact ceased and no response to email. Even app is not quite as good a previous version was, but is ok.
Please sort of the plates for Raven and Carrion Crow. Same image for both birds, this has been incorrect for a few years now..
... but not really interactive. %ICON CHANGED! #% Not improved since 2013, when I wrote the following! Works well on my nexus 7 and nexus 4. Clear pictures (no scale) with sexes and seasons where required, and good descriptive text. A good alternative to carrying the physical book. This has excellent sketches (though some bits only have one), but don't expect photos. Suggests other similar birds, BUT DOES NOT LINK TO THEM. You have to return to the index and type the name in! How is that interactive? can't search for another bird from the page of the one that has suggested that similar bird? Compare is only pictures, and they are NOT to scale. My example problem comparison is winter knot and dunlin. Unlike a book, I cannot hold open two pages and flick between them. I have to go back to the index and search again. And it does not remember what I have searched for before. The sightings log is tortuous. I have tried to use it. For each sighting I have to search for a bird, open its page, choose to Log, pick a location (uses a pop up and press on the save icon, and so I cannot type and press enter), and the cursor is in the comments box so I can't just type a few letters.
Two things to improve this - 1/ Fix the crash that occurs if you leave the app open for a while and then try for a new search; 2/ Provide an A-Z search function (similar to the RSPB site) on the front page. The current search method is very clunky.
For me it's useful but crashes a lot and to have still not fixed the incorrect plates is lazy and unforgivable.
Used to be just fine. Now, every time I power off the phone, the entire database reloads itself. Please fix it..................................................
Uses 202 mb of internal. Storage and can't be moved to sd card
A paid for app should at least start up! The downloading of the extra data still fails with the "choose default storage" problem.
A good reference app to have with you when out and about. Generally works well but have never been able to use the Bird Compare feature, which is a same.
Love the pictures and descriptions. Being able to listen to audio clips is beyond excellent. But since the update, which has an error, i cannot use it :(
Problems with downloading, pictures aren't Hi Res. Lack of flexibility in search options
Location for data has been fixed THANK YOU the app runs perfectly well! I have even bought the book on kindle so have not excuses.... I must learn!!
This app is great and really useful when I'm in the field.
Love this I use it loads - so much info and still giving it 5 stars despite the shore lark's song being absent .... Maybe in the next update? Idea for the future - clips of each bird in flight added to the identification pages? Just a thought...
One of the best bird guides. Most of the other apps I've tried are riddled with mistakes, this one is done by experts and is a reliable guide in identification covering all the common birds and a good number of rarer ones too. There is a split screen option that will certainly come in useful for those similar looking birds. However, it still refuses to recognise the sd card in my galaxy s3 with Only 1 mistake found. It has 2 raven pics in with the crow. Dispite this, I recommend this app.
I have not had this long, but it works very welcome (I see none of the issues some reviewers complain of) and is very helpful. Many reviewers call this an appified book, but that's only partially true. While the main content is of course, based on the book, it has additions: notably sounds, the ability to log when and where you saw each bird (and export it to your computer), a search function of course, and a range of indexes. There is also a help function explaining how to use it, which many apps lack. On my moto g it asked me whether to use the SD and or internal memory, and accepted the SD card fine. My only complaint is that the logging function doesn't use your device's location service to work out where you are. I guess generally I'd want a more useful name, although with a little work they could have t automatically realise from your device location that you're on an ESPN reserve! :-) however, this is a great app, and worth the money.
What is good about this app? It is accurate, based on an RSPB book, comes with lovely illustrations, lots of information and two sounds for each species. What is bad about it? It is buggy (gave me error messages when I downloaded the database), inflexible and non-intuitive. There is so much more this app could do than just duplicate the book and add sounds. The main problem for a beginner is that you need to know the name of the bird before you can look it up. Why not list by size, colour and habitat?
A few years ago I bought the RSPB British Birds app. It worked perfectly. About 3 weeks ago I emailed you that I was having problems with it - NO REPLY. I have tried downloading again. I have tried downloading to my Samsung P-900 and am told I have not selected location to save. Again I click on the default and again get the same reply. So I tell it to save to my SD card. Again it will not do so. So I remove the app and reinstall. Same problems. I have plenty of storage space on the tablet and also on the SD card. Machine is next to router when TRYING to download. What do I do please? John

Like Wikipedia but without a search function. You'd have to know quite a lot about birds to find your way around this primitive app. I hoped it would be at least as good as the RSPB"s (free) website, but it's not even close. Nothing on identifying birds, it's like a rubbish book with an almost random index.
It's lighter than carrying the book and always to hand. Seems to work well on my memory card. However it needs modernisation. I can't believe that this is an official RSPB app when it's so much worse than their Web site. It needs far better metadata and searching. It could also do with improvements to the split screen. Will contact RSPB direct to see what they have to say about it.
A paid for app should at least start up! The downloading of the extra data still fails with the "choose default storage" problem.
After purchasing and installing the app, it required 180Mb to be downloaded for it to work. This repeatedly failed and the vendor mydigitalearth were unresponsive. Total waste of money and a rip off.
On a Pixel C this app cannot compare birds.
When will this once excellent app be fixed. There is something not working in the download of data once app is installed. Can't use the app anymore. Used to love it and hate that it no longer works.
Now I can give names to the beautiful birds that visit my garden. I love that I can put a name to the early morning singer in my trees.
Asks to repeatedly download 196mb file. Download it and it asks again. Not impressive for a paid app.
Good for the ID of birds in the field when no signal allows checking songs. Easy to navigate.
I use this a lot as an I'd guide while I'm out and about, its really handy to have a quick reference guide for species I'm less familiar with. It's easy to use and has plenty of information with clear pictures and call sounds. I did use the recording function for a while but found it limited and progressed on to birdtrack. I'd have given it 5 if the recording was better and if you could also access a map guide to rspb sites.
Currently can not use this app following update.
Mediocre. Not a patch on Ispiny, but of course that is for iPhone only....I've written to them suggesting they look at the huge gap in the android market, as this one is lacking in lots of areas.
No problems getting this app to work. Good images, maps and audio for most birds. Very useful in the field.
Handy and convenient for looking up some identification pointers.
Easy to use and reliable
Unable download data file to my tablet. Waste of money. Amazed rspb should be associated with such
Please update this so it matches the excellent identifier on the RSVP website
Nice and simple app. from the experts. Like others, I cannot download latest update nor can I contact the supplier.
Great shame that a once great app no longer functions because the data download fails every time. If it ever gets updated and works I will recommend it.
One of the best bird guides. Most of the other apps are riddled with mistakes, this is one of the better ones done by experts and is mostly a reliable guide in identification and the split screen will certainly come in useful for similar looking birds. There are a few issues that need sorting like the "my list" section, to have it in catagary order rather then just a-z. Only has 1 mistake, 2 raven pics in with the crow. Finally, the app no longer accepts my sd card. Dispite this, I recommend this app.
