About eTrees of Southern Africa

This interactive version of Braam and Piet van Wyk’s Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa is an essential field guide for those visiting and living in the region with an interest in tree species. It describes over 840 of the more common and accessible tree species found in the Southern African region.

NB: Please note that an additional download of 400MB is required once this app has been installed. Please ensure you use a WiFi connection to prevent additional data costs.

This guide has species arranged in 43 logical groups based on easy-to-observe leaf and stem characteristics.

FEATURES:
* Search by English, Afrikaans or Scientific tree names.
* Images, distribution maps and text descriptions of over 840 species found throughout the region.
* Most species have multiple full colour photographs for easy identification including photos of the full tree.
* A 'Group Search' that allows you to easily identify a tree species based on the characteristics of the leaves.
* A 'Compare' feature that allows you to compare two species on the same screen
* You can select a location in Southern Africa, so that the lists of trees throughout the program display only the trees in that location.
* A personal species list that stores your sightings saved to the device that can be exported to your storage card or via email in a CSV format.

1. Can you add a feature to show the tree that I mark myself on a detail map with the occurence area to use as a tree mapping app? 2. Can you add a feature where I upload more photos a tree? Can you add a feature where I add more trees that are not in the list?

Q70%

This is really a helpful app to identify trees. The problem is that I could not find some familiar trees in the app. It is not a complete list of trees.

G70%
by G####:

There is no tree key so it is hard to find a tree from scratch. All books have this key in the front with discriminating questions to help identify a genus then family, then species. You still need a book

Dissapointing ! Decided to update and download the additional 409.2MB, but it goes past that mark. I stopped at 110%. Ridiculous ! Now my Etrees doesn't work at all after it was perfect for 3 years. PLEASE FIX !

This app is the perfect guide to take with you everywhere. I have a book by the same author, but there are more trees on the app, and a lot more photos, meaning it's easier to identify the trees. Easy to use, easy to understand, English, Afrikaans, and Scientific language options. Great app!

Downloaded update and not working. Failed to download the resource files on the phone, also downloaded from mydigitalearth and copied resource files to the root folder as per website instructions. App doesn't pick up eProducts folder and fails. Cannot open any tree files. Very frustrating! Ebirds works fine, but this application is a waste of money.

Haven't been able to open one tree page yet. Just crashes when you click on a tree. Very disappointing and expensive. Of course, too late to get money back after downloading the data pack. They say this release fixes the crashing bug, but it doesn't.

Great app for a tree lover. Photo identification great. Got to have some knowledge about tree identification. Great to use with hard copy. Gps marking very usefull. Excellent app to have with you on hiking trips. Change you language option to afrikaans to search afrikaans common names. Use my location to narrow down search.

Not very much helpfull. Only real expert can used this app. The searh function help nothing unless you know the tree and the exact spellling of the name. Waist of money app.

Thanx for the new version. It's much better than the previous one. To search for the Afrikaans names, is the biggest chance for me. So I've changed from a one star to a four star rating.

Not user friendly. You have to be an expert on trees to use this app. This app is about trees of Southern Africa but no list of Afrikaans common names, not even a search on Afrikaans common names. No alphabetic list of common names, you have to know which family a tree belongs to, to be able to find any certain tree and it's info. This app is not 'n nearly in the same class as the book. I would not reccommend buying the app.

T70%
by T####:

Very handy guide to have, although some things are lacking. The search function only works in english - searching for KREMETART won`t work. All species listed in english only (I suspect more than half of the people that bought this app are Afrikaans speaking). Afrikaans names only given with species specific description. Otherwise great app with good pictures and good descriptions.

W70%
by W####:

Disappointing. No structure to the program. I would have expected picture of tree followed (consistently) by pictures of bark, leaves, fruit, etc. If only all the pics were as in-focus as the Baobab on the cover Kg

T70%
by T####:

This product do not support Afrikaans currently but the developer mailed me to confirm that it will be implemented within the next year, speedy and friendly response

O70%
by O####:

OK so if you own a nexus you need to rotate to normal front view don't turn it you won't get any info Don't have any info on the species of plant I'm looking at ' how do I get the info of the pic I'm looking at,must also state that my cell phone takes better quality pics than the illustrated ones on here ''really what's this about ' or am I just unluckyband got a bad download or missing data '??????????

T70%

Very handy take-along tool that I use a lot. I would give it 5 stars if Afrikaans names could be searched.

A70%
by A####:

Slightly disappointing, as the smart search function could not lead me to the right tree.you still need to know most of your trees beforehand.

T70%
by T####:

I'm critical based on high price, but the I will keep the app anyway (I'm a biologist). Serious flaws: the smart search key is good but yields a final list of common names only, with no thumbnails - i.e. basically unusable, esp for big groups. Full spp. lists are by family (good) but families are not alphabetical (TERRIBLE) Cannot search by family I.e. if you don't already know genus/name you won't find tree No distribution maps Images not well optimised and far less clear than the book at the same size.

T70%
by T####:

Great app very handy to have this in the field for quick reference.

T70%
by T####:

Wat 'n teleurstelling! Ek ken nie die Engelse name nie, en die Afrikaanse name is onbeskikbaar. Please developers....update with Afrikaans names as well. Riaan.
