About SCiO Pocket Molecular Sensor

SCiO is the world’s first affordable spectrometer that fits in the palm of your hand - a revolutionary pocket molecular sensor that gives instant relevant insights about physical objects around you.
NOTE: REQUIRES A SCIO SENSOR. LEARN MORE AT WWW.CONSUMERPHYSICS.COM.

Kickstarter sci-fi hit turned reality, SCiO enables anyone to explore their physical world in a whole new way! Get instant scan results and insights to your phone, scan any objects, compare molecular fingerprints and build your own molecular sensing mini applets.

GET INSTANT RELEVANT INSIGHTS
The SCiO App includes applets that provide insights on a variety of categories, such as nutritional values of dairy products and active ingredients of over-the-counter painkillers and more. New applets are added periodically.

BUILD YOUR OWN MOLECULAR SENSING APPLETS
For the explorers at heart, the SCiO app includes SCiO Workshop - a fun tool that introduces you to the fascinating world of spectroscopy, lets you observe the spectra of the scanned objects of your choice and build mini applets that enable the identification of these objects.

SPECTROSCAN
Scan anything and instantly view the unique molecular fingerprint of that object on your SCiO app. Scans can be compared to show the differences and similarities between objects and materials.

What are users saying about SCiO Pocket Molecular Sensor

Not sure what went wrong, but this totally featureless software makes SCiO device a $200 useless toy. It was presented as something that analyzes material for substances it consists of. And there is no such feature in the end. Am I missing something? I would ask for my money back, but I guess it's not an option for Kickstarter backer.

C70%
by C####:

A useless toy -I was one of the original backers and just received it today, three years later. I was not expecting much, based on the reviews. SCIO is a wonderful idea but something went wrong along the way of development or it needs much more work to be useful. Not a good use of money

R70%
by R####:

I want to know if a fruit or vegetable is Bio or has any chemicals. The application is very limited/useless.

H70%
by H####:

For this unit to be of any value it must scan unknown items and tell you the composition. Example: What is the sugar content of my pasture grass; any pesticides. Any pesticides on my organic food.

C70%
by C####:

Chose Fruits section and trying to scan banana. It couldn't even recognize the product. My expectation was to get the data about ingredients in this banana, such as: lime % in it which they use, some other unhealthy ingredients which might come from bad storage e.g. formaldehyde %. Pity but it's an expensive useless toy for me.

M70%
by M####:

Great start but needs way more applets to scan certain more useful things. I was hoping to be able to scan pretty much anything and be able to identify at least what type of material it is. Database needs to grow and be open source.

C70%
by C####:

All original applets disappeared, except "fruit and vegetables". After many tests, decided to reinstall the app. Now I can't validate the "tutorial" as it fails scanning my hand. The scio is well paired and connected, and my Internet in fine. Please fix. Also, the app and database didn't evolve. You guys released a phone with your sensor, congratulations, but it's time to improve the database and the actual usefulness of the Scio!!

Bombs out every time I try to open it. Not happy as i invested in the hardware. I hope it gets fixed soon.

C70%
by C####:

Limited amount of applets doesn't make this very interesting

C70%
by C####:

Needs more applets for different types of objects and database update, but works perfectly on applets available now

J70%
by J####:

Exsisting applets work perfect, but device needs more of them as soon as possible.

C70%
by C####:

The app crashes after open any applet. V.1.1.0.247 - the same error

Just got it today, charged it and was dissappointed. SCiO Will not connect to phone, Android system 6, SCiO times out and phone just spinning circle. When I changed the name to plain SCiO it connected.

I tried apple, and body fat and nothing came back. Totally useless.

I like tech and the app and its ease of use but the a more public database would be better with more information. It is upsetting that all the information that the dev kit can offer is limited to those with a license, this app should have those higher capabilities, like catalogs, custom objects etc.

Needs a lot of work

C70%

So I can tell the difference between my hand and a desk, so what?

The purpose of providing an app review is to review the app. So that is what I will do. Consumer Physics has created one of the most intuitive apps I've ever seen. This app shows the potential of the product. My four (not five) star review relates to the barebones database which I hope will be resolved in time, but this app and its well-made accompanying product has incredible potential if Consumer Physics can populate that database the way most of us were hoping for.

by C####:

It could be good to haven't a lot of calibration, it's not intuitive for a newbie.

Right now scio is little more than a squiggly line generator and an expensive toy. Theres no real feedback/ analysis or insight provided by a scio scan. The applets as it stands are severely limited to a few foods. The DIY app just lets you name scans and compare graphs but tell you nothing more. That said the hardware appears to work so I hope in time it blossoms into what we all want it to be. For now it is not even close. Hope to upgrade this review in time as i still like the concept.

I knew it wasn't going to be what they promised but it's even less than I thought. Most tech kickstarter projects are novelty use only, if they work. At least this works but it's definitely novelty use only. It might be interesting for kids to muck around making applets to find the difference between wood and plastic but if you're expecting to measure anything beyond some primary food sources you're out of luck. Perhaps in the future after they've added considerably more to their database it will be useful, until then, the future certainly hasn't arrived.

C70%
by C####:

With the update everything is now unknown material. I only wanted to check tomatoes, and I can't check anything now.

C70%
by C####:

3 years to get the device and the database is still very limited! What have these guys been doing other than enjoying the cash from the Kickstarter campaign. Let's just hope there will be some major updates and continued support. Also, make sure to back up previous versions of there app, some of there updates suck!

C70%

After using the scanner Im really impressed with its technology. Thats the reason for the stars, the reason for the missing stars is the lack of information provided when I scan anything other than food or pain reliever pills. Will there be a larger library of premade applets in the future? Also when I create an applet I can only identify what it is and not what the substance actually contains in quantifiable, numeral information. I better start scanning in order to build my own database for future scans.

C70%
by C####:

Says that it doesn't have a connection but all my other apps can see the internet.

V70%

Right now all this app does is basically tell you things that you would already know. I have been hoping that it would update to include a larger database soon, bit after a long time of it sitting on my shelf and doing nothing, I'm beginning to worry it'll just turn out to be some expensive toy.

C70%
by C####:

I'm really disappointed with you. I have been the oryginał backer and all I got so far is constant disappointment. I have not received my promised device despite all backers' devices supposedly being sent. I wrote to you about it several times but was completely ignored. Maybe this 1 star will get your attention.

I tried everything to pair the device o my phone. Tldr; Bluetooth saw the device but system and app wouldn't connect to it.
