El Colegio de Geólogos es una institución sin finalidad lucrativa creada para la defensa y apoyo de los intereses de los Geólogos, creada por Ley 73/1978 de 26 de Diciembre, es una corporación de Derecho Público, amparada por Ley y reconocida por el Estado, con personalidad jurídica propia y capacidad plena para el ejercicio de sus funciones y cumplimiento de sus fines.

Goza, a todos los efectos, del rango de preeminencia atribuidos a esta clase de entidades por la Ley de Colegios Profesionales, por lo que es la única corporación legitimada para elevar a los Poderes Públicos los problemas y aspiraciones de la profesión, asumiendo en tal sentido la representación del colectivo profesional.

Los Estatutos del ICOG fueron aprobados por el Real Decreto 1378/2001, de 7 de diciembre de 2001. Se encuentran a disposición de sus colegiados en la Sede Central y Delegaciones del Colegio.
