Koptische kerk Amsterdam

Sinds het begin van de jaren zestig wonen er Koptisch Orthodoxe christenen in Nederland. De eerste families kwamen hier om te studeren en om betere beroepsperspectieven te vinden. In de jaren zeventig kwamen veel studenten tijdens hun Egyptische zomervakantie naar Nederland, voor vakantiewerk in de landbouw, in fabrieken, in de horeca of auto handel. Sommigen wilden hier blijven en vestigden zich definitief in Nederland. Als een Koptisch Orthodoxe geestelijke toevallig in Nederland verbleef nam hij de gelegenheid waar om de Heilige Liturgie op te dragen. Tot 1976 vonden zo'n drie à vier Heilige liturgieën plaats.

In de jaren daarna begon het aantal Koptisch Orthodoxe families sterk toe te nemen. In 1976 bezocht wijlen bisschop Anba Markos, de Metropoliet van de Kopten in Frankrijk, Nederland. Hij maakte er kennis met de families en stelde vervolgens een officiële kerkelijke registratie op. Daarna kwam ook bisschop Anba Athanasius en een vader uit Parijs om de kerkleden te bezoeken. Eens in de twee maanden werd de Heilige Liturgie door hen gecelebreerd in een gehuurde kerk in Amsterdam.

Op 30 mei 1985 vestigde Vader Arsenious El Baramousy zich als eerste Koptisch Orthodoxe priester permanent in Amsterdam om de Kopten in Nederland van dienst te kunnen zijn. Hij was gestuurd door Zijne Heiligheid Paus Shenouda de derde, Paus van Alexandrië en de 117e opvolger van St. Marcus de Evangelist. Door zijn komst keken de Kopten uit naar een eigen kerk en zij spanden zich in om een geschikt gebouw te vinden. God leidde hen naar het huidige kerkgebouw in Amsterdam Noord. Op 2 oktober 1985 werd het koopcontract ondertekend en de kerk overgedragen. Op zondag 20 oktober 1985 droegen we de eerste Heilige Liturgie op in de nieuwe kerk en we waren blij met dit nieuwe Godshuis. Daarna waren we druk bezig om de kerk in Koptisch Orthodoxe stijl in te richten.



Vanaf die tijd vonden er driemaal in de week Heilige Liturgieën plaats aangevuld met andere wekelijkse bijeenkomsten en activiteiten. We bouwden een iconostase, een kinderruimte, en een doopvont. Ook hingen we meer dan veertig iconen op, die in een tijdsbestek van twee jaar door de iconenschilder Adel Nasief speciaal voor de kerk ontworpen werden. We verrijkten het kerkinterieur met kroonluchters in moderne Koptische stijl en de kerkzaal en de aangrenzende vertrekken op de eerste verdieping werden vernieuwd. Daarnaast bouwden we nog een kleine kapel opgedragen aan de Heilige Mari Mina. Op vrijdag 21 februari 1992 knipte Zijne Heiligheid Paus Shenouda III zelf het openingslint van de kerk door en onthulde de Nederlandstalige gedenksteen, die speciaal voor deze gelegenheid gemaakt was. In het bijzijn van 1500 Kopten consacreerde Zijne Heiligheid in naam van de Heilige Maagd Maria met het Heilige Olie de kerk, het altaar, de iconen, de kapel Mari Mina, het doopvont en de andere kerkattributen. Naast de enthousiaste gelovigen waren er ook negen + geestelijke hoogwaardigheidsbekleders en 15 Koptisch orthodoxe priesters uit geheel Europa aanwezig. Since the beginning of the sixties live Coptic Orthodox Christians in the Netherlands. The first families came here to study and to find better job prospects. In the seventies, many students during their summer vacation to Egypt Netherlands, for summer jobs in agriculture, in factories, restaurants or car trade. In subsequent years, the number of Coptic Orthodox families began to rise sharply. In 1976, visited the late Bishop Anba Markos, the Metropolitan of the Copts in France, Netherlands. He became acquainted with the family and then proposed an ecclesiastical official registration. Then came Bishop Anba Athanasius and a father from Paris to visit the church members. Every two months the Holy Liturgy was celebrated by them in a rented church in Amsterdam.

On May 30, 1985 Father Arsenious El Baramousy settled first Coptic Orthodox priest permanently in Amsterdam in order to serve the Copts in the Netherlands. He was sent by His Holiness Pope Shenouda the third, Pope of Alexandria and the 117th successor of St. Mark the Evangelist. His arrival Copts looked forward to a church, they endeavored to find a suitable building. God led them to the current church building in Amsterdam North. On October 2, 1985 the purchase contract was signed and handed over to the church. On Sunday, October 20th, 1985, we contributed the first Holy Liturgy in the new church and we were delighted with this new hospice. Then we were busy to decorate the church in Coptic Orthodox style.

 

Since that time, there were three times a week Holy Liturgies place complemented by other weekly meetings and activities. We built an iconostasis, a children's area, and a font. We also hung over forty icons that were designed in a period of two years by the icon painter Adel Nasief specially for the church. We enriched the church interior with chandeliers in modern style and the Coptic church hall and adjacent rooms on the first floor were renewed. In addition, we built a small chapel dedicated to the Holy Marimina. On Friday, February 21, 1992 His Holiness Pope Shenouda III cut the opening ribbon itself of the Church and revealed by the Dutch memorial, which was created especially for this occasion. In the presence of 1,500 Copts His Holiness consecrated in the name of the Virgin Mary with the Holy Oil the church, the altar, the icons, the chapel Mari Mina, the font and the other church attributes. Besides the enthusiastic believers there were nine + ecclesiastical dignitaries and 15 Coptic Orthodox priests from across Europe present.
