조형예술의 탄생

최초로 세계의 조형언어를 해독하다.
우리가 세상에 태어나서 눈에 보이는 것은 교육을 받으면서 시야가 좁아졌으므로, 보이는 것은 빙산의 일각뿐이다. 현실에서 본 것과, 현실에서 본 것과 비슷한 것만 보인다. 우주에 가득 찬 대생명력(Nature)혹은 성령(聖靈‘ Holy Spirit)은 만물생성의 근원으로, 산업화되고 과학화된 현재의 우리 눈에 보이지 않는다. 즉 수 천 년 전의 사람들은 훨씬 영적靈的 존재여서 그 보이지 않는 기운을 가시화可視化하여 여러 가지 무늬를 만들었으므로 현재의 우리 눈에 보이지 않는다. 이른 바 무늬라고 부르는 인간이 만든 일체의 조형造形은 놀랍게도 만물생성의 근원인 영기문靈氣文임을 알게 되었으며, 그 영기문은 생명이 생성하는 여러 단계를 보여주므로 한 눈에 파악할 수 없다. 그러므로 그 모든 불가시(不可視)의 것을 가시화한 조형에는 이름이 없어서 필자가 만든 용어가 많다. 즉 한마디로 문자언어에 대응하는 조형언어를 필자가 인류 역사상 최초로 해독한 것이다.

저자 소개

강우방 (1941년~ ) 서울대 독문학과 졸업. 서울대 고고인류학과 학사편입-중퇴. 일본 교토와 도쿄의 국립박물관에서 연수. 미국 하버드 미술사학과 박사과정 수료.
국립중앙박물관 미술부장, 학예연구실장, 국립경주박물관 학예연구실장, 관장 역임. 이화여대 초빙교수로 봉직하다 현재 일향(一鄕)한국미술사연구원 원장임.
저술로는 논문 모음집인 『원융과 조화 - 한국불교조각사의 원리 I』과 『법공과 장엄 - 한국불교조각사의 원리 II』가 있다. 불교조각 개설서로는 『한국불교조각의 흐름』, 불화에 관한 것으로는 『감로탱』이 있다. 최근에는 새로운 시각으로 한국의 조형미술을 물론 중국과 일본의 조형미술을 해석하며 일반적 조형의 원리를 다루고 있는 ‘형태의 탄생’시리즈 첫 번째 책으로 『한국미술의 탄생』을 펴낸 바 있다. 두 번째 책은 고려불화 한점으로 저서로 낸 『관음보살의 탄생』이 있다. “에세이 형식으로 쓴 예술론으로는 『미의 순례』,『미술과 역사 사이에서』,『한국미술, 그 분출하는 생명력』, 『어느 미술사가의 편지』, 그리고 사진전 도록 겸 에세이집인『영겁 그리고 찰라』등이 있다.
평생 한국미술의 모태가 통일신라 미술에 있다고 생각해 왔는데 대학으로 자리를 옮긴 2000년 이래, 더 근원적인 모태가 고구려미술임을 확신하게 되어 한국미술 전체를 재해석하는 작업을 하고 있으며, 그 독자적 방법론으로 중국과 일본의 미술도 재해석하는 작업을 하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, ‘세계미술사’의 가능성도 제시할 수 있게 되어 그리스-로마 미술, 비잔틴 미술, 이슬람 미술, 르네상스 미술과 서아시아 등지의 미술도 연구하고 있다.
