Joule: Sous Vide by ChefSteps for Android
No app should use 800MB of storage! For as beautiful the UI is, it's complicated and a pain to use. It feels like it take 5 minutes just to turn on and set the temp.
I wish there was Notification Panel support and the user could be shown current temp, timer, etc... It's annoying having to launch the app each time I want the ETA.
Sad to say but I had to revert back to my trusty backup Anova sou vide device because of the connectivity issues with the joule.
Needs an automatic timer that begins when water reaches set temperature (or at least show what time the water reached the set temperature in cook history).
It's crazy cool, and easy to work!
Easy to use! Great app!
Dear Joule, I really want to love you. You make the best chicken I think I've ever had and your design and UI are undeniably beautiful. However, when it takes 5 minutes just to get a temperature to set correctly and I end up using the timer on my phone instead of risking that setting a timer will cancel the cooking temperature, I'm more inclined to just use a pan.
Disconnects from joule way too often, even though my wifi signal is strong. Sometimes takes a long time to change a setting. App is slow to respond to presses.
Excellent Sous Vide companion! I've been a fan of ChefSteps for a while, and this app is amazing. The visual doneness guides are great. An option to make personal notes would be nice. I appreciate the 'Our Fave' temp, but a 'My Fave' would be good too to submit. Like the app rating system here. I like that I don't have to have the official Joule device to join in- I built my own water bath first to see if I liked the sous vide technique; I'm using it (and this app) so much, I think I'm ready to splash the cash on a Joule now. Thanks ChefSteps!
I love the Joule but wish it had an option to add notes since i have my own recipes and use my own temperature settings. I'm currently using my notes app to store my recipes and cooking temperatures and times.
Connects great to my wifi, but the notifications have been delayed. I sous vide flank steak and luckily I remembered the time because I didn't get a notification for another 30 minutes.
Struggled with my previous sous vide equipment. Joule is so easy to use! I couldn't live without it now!!
I am is makes loves to Joule!!! Only like issue and stuff so far is that I is wanna be all, "I'm agonna be all set temp for like a certain time and then have it drop to another temp for another time. So I can be all like making tings in one kit." Ya know what I sez? Can ya feel me?
If the entire process is app based, maybe more emphasis should be placed on the app. This is absolutely unacceptable for the price of the product it supports. It shouldn't be a struggle every time.
430 Mb to turn my joule on and off is insane. Ditch the videos, they are useless.
Poor UX design and buggy animations ( ionic framework doesnt provide smooth animations ), but other then that - 5/5. :)
I will try this with the new update and see how it goes.
I like using when it works, disconnect from Bluetooth and WiFi all the time :(
Amazing product and accompanying app!
Love it!
Seamless integration
Awesome
Hey, devs. Keep up the great work on the app! One thing though. The app, along with data right now sites at a little over 200mb for me. Can you please add the option of moving the app to an sdcard in the phone in the future? Would be great if you could. Thanks for your time and courtesy!
This app needs so much work. Everytime you reopen the app you're waiting 10 seconds for everything to load from web. So slow. I found out the app had taken 600-700 mb of space on my device. Not sure why. It does what it needs to but it's frustrating sure. Update: Few months later after clearing device data spoken of in review. Found Joule consuming 1.6 GB of internal storage space. Is this app storing old versions of updates?
Can't start cooking because the app won't find the Joule. But if I click on the troubleshoot button it says the app is already connected. I shouldn't have to spend 20 minutes messing with an app only to have to put in a support ticket. If you're going to design a product that requires an app to work maybe make sure the app works.
Joule is great, but the firmware often disconnects from my phone for no reason whatsoever. As mentioned in a comment below it can take up to 1-2 minutes to reconnect
I love it when the app works, but every time I switch back to the Joule app during a cook, it takes around 30-60 seconds to reconnect or it doesn't connect at all.
The prior version worked fine on my HTC...with this one I could not access manual controls..did a reset and now it will not even recognize me to login
Enjoy the app so far. Would like to see a favorite recipes location that I can save to. And a bit faster initial loading, pressing search makes you wait a good amount of time before you can actually type. Other than those I enjoy seeing what recipes are available and can't wait for more.
App is awesome but for some reason no longer loads videos. Tried all setting options including Wi-Fi. Used to work great.
Love the app! Visual doneness guides are a game changer! I do wish that I could give my Joule a longer name.
Love the joule. It's changed the way I cook meat. But please add IFTTT support.
Loving the app. Detailed steps and content really make this a thought free process. As time passes, it only gets better and better with the constant updates and improvements. Home run, guys!
I bought Joule 3 weeks ago and it is the best tool in my kitchen now. I've always loved cooking but now my wife has really gotten into cooking too and we've found a new hobby to share together. I've also convinced 5 of my coworkers to purchase one for themselves. So amazing!
Many new updates. Lots of awesome recipes. I have not failed yet following the recipes. Creme brulee is the best!
Beautiful and useful
Many issues connecting recently...very frustrating! It used to work fine, but in the last few weeks, I have had WAY too much difficulty quickly connecting to my Joule. This is not an isolated situation either--I have spoken with other Joule users experiencing the same problem. Please fix this!!! Developers seem to be monkeying around way too much recently and not correcting their bugs!
Very well thought out app. More recipes would be great - Serious Eats has a ton in comparison. However, the existing recipes have been easy to make and delish. Not keen on the proprietary recipes for "X brand" ribeye, etc.
My Joule is fresh out of the box and won't connect to my wifi. I have a new Google WiFi setup with a dozen devices on it with no problem. This app doesn't multitask well at all either. Very disappointed.

The app structure is fine, but it constantly needs to be force-closed after losing connection to the Joule. LITERALLY every single time I use it, this happens. Even worse, lately my timer has been completely resetting when this happens. Obviously, timing is a huge factor when it comes to precision cooking. I am baffled that ChefSteps would not take action on these bugs immediately, particularly because the app is absolutely crucial to using the Joule effectively. I have a Note 5, so there should be zero compatibility issues with a popular Samsung device. Until these issues are resolved, my review will remain at one star.
