FREE - NO ADS! Online/offline topo map viewer for the United States. I tried a few of the leading topo apps and didn't like them, so I learned how to use WMS and rolled my own in a weekend.
Simple Topo is so simple it's almost stupid. It simply saves every map tile you see. It uses a Google Map so the gestures and controls are already familiar, but it does not use any Google data. Instead, all map data comes from the public domain USGS National Map. Other topo apps do some sketchy things like like attribute ESRI data to the USGS and then slap their own watermark on it. Not this one! Simple Topo respects copyrights and terms of use.
I wrote Simple Topo for myself, so any improvements I make will be for my own enjoyment and edification. But like most programmers who give their software away, I'm open to suggestions and I love getting feedback. I'm already thinking about intuitive ways to control what is saved and grab tile sets for specified areas and zoom levels.

It looks as though an update (or lack of one) in 2016 killed this app. It doesn't work for me either. I get the blue current-location dot on a blank screen. No map. No nothin'.

Small app and small maps (storage space). No need to download a whole state when you just want to view one county... Solid 4 stars. Will up it to 5 when Kevin works out the tile sets and zoom levels.

I've tried several topographic mapping and navigation apps from the Play Store and I actually use BackCounty Navigator Pro but I'm not always pleased with the maps or the cost of in-app map purchases. Some of the purchases are as much as a dedicated GPS which I find ridiculous. This app is just as useful as Navigator Pro but much simpler and easier to use. The only feature that I'd like to see added to Simple Topo is a compass like the one in Navigator Pro.

As someone who hikes and goes Jeeping frequently, I have tried SO MANY topo map apps on the play store, and this one legitimately blows them out of the water. It's almost like this guy actually know's what he's doing... Must download for any outdoors enthusiast. Or anyone planning on surviving a plane crash in the wilderness.
