About Keyholder

The Keyholder application displays information for tourists and other visitors to Church of England churches, allow users to make comments, and also add photographs both to Keyholder and to Twitter.

It shows which churches are open to the public during the day and which ones are locked, have keyholders or are open at certain restricted times. In addition, the app allows you to add your own information and each church has a link to all the main information sites:

IoE - English Heritage's Images of England
CCT - The Churches Conservation Trust
FoFC - Friends of Friendless Churches
ACNY - A Church Near You
CVMA - Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi
CRSBI - Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture in Britain and Ireland
British History (VCH) for Herefordshire.
Explore Churches - National Churches Trust
Dove's Guide to church towers (bell ringing)
Geograph
Google Street View
Google Navigation
John Whitworth's Essex Churches
Suffolk Churches
Norfolk Churches
Nottinghamshire Church History (Diocese of Southwell & Nottinghamshire)

The app is synchronised with a central server allowing you to share information, photos, ratings and comments with others.

Keyholder is designed for those interested in heritage, art and architecture who like to visit English parish churches. It is not intended to provide information on service times or contact details for church officials (although this information may be added by users and is available on each entry via "A Church Near You").

Please Note: This is a subscription-based app. Without a subscription you will only be able to access CCT and FoFC churches across all of England plus other churches located within a few miles of Northampton, so as to get a feel for what the app provides. You will not be able to receive any updates or make your own comments or add photos. Subscriptions are available via the app.

For anyone such as myself, who loves history , architecture and visiting historical buildings, including churches, both ancient and more modern, remote and urban, this app is invaluable. There's nothing worse than visiting a church to find it locked, this app gives you a good indication of accessibility plus comments and photos from other visitors. Well worth the £14 annual subscription. The one thing that I would add to the comments screen is to rate the guide book/leaflet, or even if there is one.

When Play is full of apps with promising concepts but poorly-developed (some from high-profile organisations) this one is a joy. For anyone exploring England's churches, it can be frustrating to lack the local knowledge of what's open, what's locked but accessible, and what you've barely got a chance of getting into outside of Sunday morning. This app uses the author's extremely impressive church-visiting experience along with crowd-sourcing strategies to build a database of CoE churches and their opening policies. The app runs very smoothly, easy to see the local variations in locking policies at a glance: well-designed searches and visual interface. It's also helpful to actually have the location of every church so accessible: if you've ever driven into a village and can't find the church you will understand! Of course it's not perfect yet. There are noticeable gaps in the opening data (but not the churches themselves) for certain areas, the south-west and parts of Yorkshire for instance. But all it needs is a few more users to help out. Currently the subscription works out a bit over a pound a month: much less than the petrol you waste driving to locked churches!

Unfortunately, unless I happen to be in Northamptonshire, I can't see any data without paying a monthly subscription.

And the links to other sites Like crsbi are terrific

Demo version gives all the info about which churches are open, and there's plenty already there. But you need the paid version to add new info. It starts at your last location, then GPS finds you and zooms the map there. Anglican churches only.
