What is ‘selfie’?
We know we know. That is just a dumb question to ask anyone that ever owning a phone what is the meaning of the word ‘selfie’ and what is it used for. But have you ever wondered how it was called ‘selfie’ at the time and how it was eventually become more and more popular that now everyone uses it and it even happens to be added on the Oxford dictionary?
To be clear, ‘selfie’ is used to shortly describe an action where people take a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a digital camera or camera phone held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick.
The first known use of the word selfie in any paper or electronic medium appeared in an Australian internet forum on 13 September 2002 by Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki. Since then, it is getting more and more popular on MySpace, before Facebook becoming a dominant social network. In 2013, ‘selfie’ become word of the year by the Oxford English Dictionary.
